The Future of Camera Scanning: Film Carrier MK1
At Negative Supply, we believe you should spend less time scanning and more time shooting. With our Film Carrier MK1 or Film Carrier MK1 + Pro Mount MK1 kit, you can do just that.
With the Film Carrier MK1 you’ll be able to scan entire rolls of 35mm film in as little as 5 minutes or less. With the optional Pro Mount MK1, tricky camera setups are easy to level for consistent and sharp results thanks to adjustable feet and a weighted base, ensuring precision and stability, and you’ll automatically remove dust with our anti static brush!
Stretch Goal Update!
By 8AM EST on July 02, just 24 hours into our Kickstarter campaign, we officially hit 170% funding of our initial goal! Our $35,000 stretch goal needs to be met by the end of our early bird phase on July 03 at midnight!
If we meet our first stretch goal, we'll have a beta 120 film carrier in full testing by the end of September, 2019!
Spend hours with your camera, not your flatbed scanner.
Over the last year we’ve tirelessly searched for a convenient way to digitize film at home after developing C-41 and black and white films.
We tried multiple options including strip scanners and flatbeds from big manufacturers, but weren’t happy with either and the workflows were tiresome! That's why we created the Film Carrier MK1 and the Pro Mount MK1. We believe camera scanning is here to stay, and with our durable products you’ll be able to scan film quickly and efficiently, ensuring you more time to take photographs.

Film Carrier MK1 Features:
Film Stays Extremely Flat
Using a unique channel technology, each frame is forced flat using our customized guide path design. This ensures there is near zero distortion for sharp images across the frame, and allows you to have confidence in the sharpness and precision of your scans.
Full Frame Scanning
The Film Carrier MK1 allows for FULL 35mm frame scanning all the way out to the border of the image area, showing a thin black border. Most minilab scanners and flatbed solutions crop in by default.
Greater Control with Final Scan
Because of advancements in CMOS sensor technology, camera scanning now gives greater editing control for positive films like Kodak Ektachrome as well as C-41 and black and white negative films. The potential for digital capture of a negative or positive is nearly limitless, combined with the streamlined workflow that our Film Carrier MK1 offers, this is a match made in heaven.
Faster Workflows While Scanning
You simply load the roll into our Film Carrier MK1, and begin turning the advance wheel as the film comes into line with the scanning path. Advancing the film from frame to frame is a breeze with our smooth channel design, and this requires little force or pressure to achieve. Scan a full roll in 5 minutes or less!
Safer for the Emulsion
Because of our unique channel design, no part of the film emulsion comes into contact with Film Carrier MK1. Unlike other roller mechanisms that touch your image area, this only touches the outermost edges along the sprocket holes, ensuring the safety of your precious negatives or positives.
We've spent months testing strength and durability of several different customized components, and are thrilled with the final product. Our Film Carrier MK1 unit is produced using the newest HP Multi-Jet Fusion Nylon 12 printing technologies that yield incredibly complex internal geometries never before available from injection molding and machining. As an added bonus, surface finish is incredibly fine end with a high end dyed matte black finish, offering a neat aesthetic when paired with our Pro Mount MK1. The Film Carrier MK1 is constructed primarily out of nylon and stainless steel.
Our Film Carrier MK1 has one added bonus while scanning: a shielded path to prevent light falloff during capture. Your negative or positive is loaded into our MK1 towards the base of the unit, and a nylon wall comes upward on all four sides of the film, channeling and shielding the film from unwanted ambient light interference.
Pro Mount MK1 Features:
Our Film Carrier MK1 safely and easily attaches to the Pro Mount MK1, and the Mount offers added weight and widens the footprint of the unit, adding stability to the scanning process. While the Film Carrier MK1 is still stable without the Pro Mount MK1, this ensures even greater stability and control.
Our Pro Mount MK1 is a precisely designed device featuring leveling feet to guarantee a level plane for scanning. The bottoms of the leveling feet also feature small anti-slip feet for added stability and precision.
Dust-removal (yea, you read that correctly)!
Our most exciting feature on the Pro Mount MK1 saves you a tremendous amount of time and frustration in post production. Every Pro Mount MK1 includes an anti-static brush that securely attaches to the Mount, coming in line with the film gate of our Film Carrier MK1. Most dust and unwanted debris will be automatically removed from your film BEFORE scanning, saving you time and energy.
Our Pro Mount MK1 will work with future scanning solutions from Negative Supply. We are designing our beta 120 and 4x5 scanning systems to securely mount to our Pro Mount MK1, allowing you to derive as much utility as possible from this product. Yay for utility!

WHY SCAN WITH A CAMERA?
- Technology: Modern cameras with high resolution also capture slide film with better reproduction quality and color due to CMOS sensor technology that offers a wider dynamic range.
- Age: Digital camera technology is only improving, while current flatbed scanners are essentially rehashed versions of earlier products, and most minilab scanners are either discontinued or currently offer little-to-no support or parts.
Digital camera scanning is popular because it’s an easy and resourceful way to scan your own work with equipment you already own, or that can be purchased affordably.
Using your digital camera to scan/digitize film is the future, but strip holders take forever and can be tricky in use, potentially leading to issues with film flatness. Speed up scanning time by capturing entire rolls and advance between frames with a high quality stainless steel drive mechanism using our Film Carrier MK1, and add further stability and dust-removal capabilities with our Pro Mount MK1.
Unlike traditional flatbed scanners or aging minilab scanners, our unit is built around a system that evolves with digital camera technologies, allowing you to continuously upgrade your camera (aka hardware) when you deem fit.
WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR CAMERA SCANNING?
- Negative Holder
Your negative holder keeps the film in place for image capture, and your film needs to be completely flat for sharp photos. Our Film Carrier MK1 with or without our Pro Mount MK1 is fantastic for this.
- Light Source
Illuminate the negative from below using a standard light table, LED light pad, or your smart phone/tablet (if you're in a pinch). Consistent light allows for even capture without vignetting. No need to break the bank on this!
- Copy Stand or Tripod
Hold the camera over the light source using a copy stand or tripod. Avoiding shake will reduce blur and sharpen images, and our Pro Mount MK1 assists in this as well.
- Digital Camera
Most digital cameras work well, whether a mirrorless camera or DSLR, just ensure you can mount a basic macro lens. Tethered capture to a computer makes workflow much faster but is not a requirement, using a cable release or self timer can help reduce blur when capturing.
WHAT WE SOLVED?
The biggest pain point with camera scanning is holding the negative flat during scanning. The Film Carrier MK1 solves this.
While varying concepts for digital camera film scanning exist today, the Film Carrier MK1 is unique in that it scans full length, uncut rolls of 35mm film. Providing a much faster means of operation, having the ability to scan an uncut roll can allow an operator to scan an entire 36 exposure roll in 5 minutes or less. Alternatively, you can scan strips of film if your negatives are already cut. The Film Carrier MK1 can scan 35mm full and half frame film in strips or full rolls.
Launch Timeline and Production
With our Film Carrier MK1 and Pro Mount MK1, we didn't want to bring a product into the world without significantly testing it first. Because of this, we've spent the last 4 months designing and working through potential issues including manufacturing timelines. Unlike other Kickstarters out there, we have everything planned ahead of launch to ensure we fulfill orders as soon as possible. In fact, our beta units come off the same manufacturing lines as our production models and require simple assembly by our team before shipping. It's that simple! Today we are on version 7 of our initial beta unit, and are proud of the product we plan to share with the world.
Fulfilling your orders is as easy as clicking order and putting units in boxes. Because of the rapidly changing nature of the film industry, we know products spring to market out of nowhere. Agile manufacturing gives us an advantage by allowing for production at the end of our campaign whether we sell 50 or 500+ units.
Anticipated ship date of orders: September, 2019.
Why did we design the Film Carrier MK1 + Pro Mount MK1?
We designed these products out of a frustration with current scanning options on the market today, as well as to create a more time efficient process for scanning full rolls or strips of 35mm film.
We believe you should spend less time scanning, and more time shooting. With the Film Carrier MK1, you can do just that.
While our design is nearly finalized and production is lined up and ready to go, we have to order in a volume that allows us to offer a reasonable price while sustaining future business operations. We aim to offer a comprehensive line of camera scanning products, not just the Film Carrier MK1 and Pro Mount MK1.
We're launching this Kickstarter to fund packaging expenses, logistic expenses, and to secure pre-orders in quantities that make sense from a business perspective. Thanks to our manufacturing workflow, we don't have to order quantities of thousands of units at a time. Whether we order 50 or 500, we'll be able to produce, assemble, package, and ship these products quickly.
Potential stretch goals will be announced once we meet our initial goal.

Risks and challenges
We've spent months working to prepare for this Kickstarter and for the opportunity to create and ship this product to backers all over the world. We've worked tirelessly to prepare for and situation, and have plans in place to order and assemble all units within 10-14 days of funds becoming available from Kickstarter. Our goal is to have ALL orders postmarked by the end of September.
At the moment, funding this goal with 50 units will be straightforward, and we've got facilities and manufacturing ready to go. However, as we begin to anticipate selling more than 200 units, we have started creating contingency plans to ensure timely shipments. We are confident that with these plans in place, we will be able to stick to our September shipment timeline for volumes of 500 units or more.
Additionally, because of our extremely tight standards for quality, we will be unwaveringly committed to quality manufacturing. While we currently have prototypes that meet all of our criteria, we want to ensure the same is true for production runs. This is why we are also planning out a full quality control stage during manufacturing, film testing every Film Carrier MK1 and Pro Mount MK1 before shipping.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
