This is Asvin Srivatsangam. I live and work in Sunnyvale, California. I have day job as a web designer, but in the evening I create comic books. This year I am writing a graphic novel with Ashok Rajagopalan titled 'Neelakshi:The Quest for Amrit'. We have always dreamt of popularizing a deserving genre: Indian fantasy. We wish to see it taken up by Hollywood, and want kids across the globe delighting in reading stories that are in the rich mythology and stories of Ancient India. When combined with contemporary fiction devices; the themes and motifs from Hindu mythology can help in creating a powerful fantasy, and open up a whole new world for the readers and writers. The fantasy genre in the West has exhausted British myths and creatures; we have seen unicorns, goblins, fairies, witches, wizards, gnomes, dwarfs, and dragons ... In the movies too, they have happily exploited Greek and Roman motifs: centaurs, flying horses, gorgons. But the rich folklore of India and Indian mythology is still untapped. It is with this intention I venture to present Neelakshi. Neelakshi is a graphic novel set in the present; it is the story of Neela, an Indian girl who lives with her parents in San Francisco. She is pulled into the other two worlds of Hindu mythology: Paataala (the underworld of the demons), and later to Swarga (the abode of the demigods). Keeping it as a fast paced swords-and-sorcery fantasy, we have also tried to inject our love for world peace and hate for inequality into the story. Neelakshi is just the beginning; we would love to do more in the future.

By funding this project, you help us realize a dream very close to our hearts. Since my teens I have been a big fan of comics and graphic novels and had always wanted to create my own comic book. I also want to explore a new genre in comics: stories inspired by the rich mythology of India but not just retell existing mythology. With Ashok Rajagopalan, my writing partner and published writer and illustrator of children's books, who shares the same dream, I want to produce 'Neelakshi,' a sword and sorcery graphic novel with a strong female protagonist, Neil.
Neil is transported to the underworld of demons where she is Neelakshi, the promised one of prophecy. The story is her quest for amrit, the nectar of immortality, and how she establishes peace in the three worlds of Hindu myth.
For this project, we have enlisted the support and skills of the talented artist Judit Tondora and the amazing colorist Roland Pilcz.
We request funding for the production of 'Neelakshi - The Quest for Amrit' a 64 page graphic novel of the highest quality. We expect to start a minor revolution in visual storytelling with this project.
We have created the initial pages but need funds to proceed and ensure Neelakshi is published. We will provide regular updates at each stage of the process as we proceed. Both of us work at our day jobs due to financial necessity, but hope to be doing only comic books in the future and give pleasure to fans across the globe. We will give of our best in terms of quality and skills, but we need your support.
All of the funds collected from this project will go toward paying the artists who have been working on the book. Penciling, coloring and lettering.
This is phase 1 of the funding. We might post again for coloring.
