About this project
5th Edition Rules: 1st Edition Feel! Necromancer Games re-animates itself bigger, better, and badder than ever before for the 5th Edition of the *world’s most popular fantasy roleplaying game. With the help of Steve Winter and Ed Greenwood, we are going to be creating supplemental books (up to 3 of them!) to play the new edition Old School Style — the Necromancer way.
- 5th Edition Foes - between 200-250 additional creatures, beasts, monsters and titans to challenge your players and enhance your adventures!
- Quests of Doom: X Adventures Worth Winning -12+ adventures worth winning, each written by one of our many iconic authors. (X begins with 12 and increases based on stretch goals.)
- Book of Lost Spells - Hundreds of new spells to enhance your 5th edition spell casters and NPCs.
Just like we did with the Third Edition, our objective isn’t to compete with the the upcoming 5th edition; it’s to offer resources for playing the game the old way, old school style. In general it’s darker and deadlier gaming than the official recommendations. It’s not for crybabies. Between 1999 and 2006, we racked up award after award, picking up worldwide recognition as a publishing powerhouse... and now we’re back!
"To pull this project together and give it the right “feel” for Necromancer Games, we recruited an amazing lineup of writers. Start with a core of Necromancer Games regulars like Bill Webb (Rappan Athuk, The Lost City of Barakus), Matt Finch (Swords & Wizardry, Tome of Adventure Design), J. Collura (Caverns of Thracia Reloaded, Chaos Rising), Michael Curtis (The Dungeon Alphabet, Realms of Crawling Chaos), and Casey Christofferson (The Tome of Horrors, City of Brass). Throw in a few D&D long-timers like Steve Winter (Tyranny of Dragons, Murder in Baldur’s Gate), James M. Ward (Gamma World, Pool of Radiance, Castle Keeper’s Guide), Skip Williams (Axe of the Dwarvish Lords, The Rod of Seven Parts), and Ed Greenwood (The Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, The City of Splendors). The result is a stack of adventures that are guaranteed to break bones, stir long-forgotten nightmares, push heroes to their utmost limits, and cement massive grins on the faces of players and DMs alike."
Here's the Problem
5th Edition is brand new and we have absolutely no idea how many books to print, so Kickstarter is going to be a very important tool. We're going to let you, our valued customers, tell us how many books to print.
What You Get
Eventually, there will be three books, all library-bound hardcovers made for decades of use, written by the Necromancer Games team of Steve Winter, Bill Webb, Greg Vaughan, Matt Finch, J. Collura, Michael Curtis, Casey Christofferson, James M. Ward, Skip Williams, and Ed Greenwood.
We start out with monsters: a book called 5th Edition Foes. It’s going to start with 200 monsters in it, which means it will be about 220 pages. That’s an estimate. As we hit stretch goals, we’ll add more monsters as we continue to raise money.
The next book is Quests of Doom, an adventure book we estimate at 180-260 pages, depending on stretch goals achieved. It will contain two updates from third edition books (Demons and Devils, Vampires and Liches) that contained a total of six adventures. PLUS, it will contain 6-12 new adventures under the section titles "Bugs and Blobs", “Giants and Dragons,” “Men and Monstrosities,” and “Elementals and Lycanthropes.” This is where we bring in some heavy hitters as authors, but we haven’t nailed down which author is going to write which adventure. That information might get settled during the duration of the Kickstarter, but we’re not rushing it. The author lineup might not be finalized until after the Kickstarter is finished — see below about how this Kickstarter is a little different from our prior ones. For those following the Lost Lands™ Campaign Setting, Greg Vaughan will be making sure that the adventures are all fully compatible with and integrated into the Lost Lands. This book will be $40, that's $3.33 per adventure! If we make all of our stretch goals the price drops to $2.22 per adventure!
The third book that comes available as a stretch goal is the 5th Edition Book of Lost Spells. This sourcebook will contain hundreds of spells, and we estimate that it will run 250 pages. The contents will be drawn from several books Necromancer Games wrote for 3rd Edition, but we will also be culling out a lot that doesn't work with 5th Edition, and adding a few new ones.
This One's a Little Different
Our team (through Frog God Games) has run, funded, and fulfilled 3 Kickstarters (Rappan Athuk, Swords & Wizardry, and Razor Coast), and we have 2 more that are in the fulfillment process (Lost City of Barakus and Sword of Air). These 5 Kickstarters raised a total of over $600,000. In each of them, we had most of the work done ahead of time, and the main focus was on raising money for the art, the printing, and so forth. For this one, it’s a little different because we’re operating ahead of the normal timeline. Not all of the game’s rules are known to us at this time, and probably a couple of them are still being finalized in the Crystal Towers of Renton.
This means we’re creating a product that has some unknown variables, and it means that you’re backing it more as a patron than as a pre-order customer. We’re going to deliver these books, but it’s going to be an evolving process.
Why So Early?
It might seem like we’re jumping the gun on this project: after all, why not just wait until the Core Books are published by the Wizards, and start then? Two answers. First of all, to be very selfish about it, if we’re first we can snag all the best artists and authors before someone else does. That gives us a superior product and a reputation for excellence. The second reason is that when a new edition comes out, the game masters want more monsters, adventures, and other resources immediately. Some publisher is going to provide them, and we want it to be us. Our products have a lot of lead time, because our book-bindings are library quality, because we work with A-team authors and artists who have waiting lists, and because good editing and good art take time. If we’re going to put top-of-the-line products out there when our customers want them, we have to start now.
Some add-ons may be added as stretch goals. Hang tight, keep watching, and don’t split the party.

- $200 Leather Bound Cover (per book) - We do real leather covers, not composite leather (ground-up scraps pressed into shape). We buy leather by the hide, and that’s what goes on our leather-bound books. Our leather covers are the real deal. BONUS: All Leather Books are Signed by the Authors!

Risks and challenges
In this Kickstarter, you’re almost certain to get something that’s slightly different from the way we are planning it right at this moment, because we’re raising money and starting work before the whole game is even out on the shelves. Page counts will vary depending on the length and format of the material, licensing requirements might alter the content of updated material, and so on.
HOWEVER, from experience in the many Kickstarters that we have fulfilled or are currently fulfilling, we believe that we have eliminated or accounted for the main risks that cause less-experienced companies to fail. We have (a) already priced the products to account for potential increases in the cost of shipping and postage over the course of production, (b) have a sophisticated in-house pledge management software system that has already been used successfully to fulfill large Kickstarters, (c) have backup authors and editors lined up, (d) already have the majority of the art, (e) already have the majority of the non-rules-specific text written, (f) have our own climate-controlled warehouse space, (g) have a long-standing relationship with two printers based on being a customer that places five-digit orders several times a year and (h) have considerable capital available to use in case there are unexpected expenses or cash-flow glitches.
A number of other factors in this particular Kickstarter may be affected by third parties, including the Wizards of the Coast delivery schedule for books and pdfs, and also our freelance artists, writers, and editors. Several details of rules-presentation may affect page count (the number of lines in a monster stat block, for example). Lastly, a risk we must address is the health of each one of our authors and their ability to write adventures in each one of these books. We do not expect any complications, but if any do arise, we will do everything in our power to write and deliver the books on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
