Three colors. Three dreams. Three games.
This is a high-trust, experimental game project. I have three games in my head and my heart, stuttering towards reality. I want to make them real. I don't know what they'll be like, yet.
Do you trust me?
I have no artists lined up. I have no quotes for production. I have no preview or playtest materials. These things will all come, when needed - for now, though, all I have is you.
If you trust me to see these games through, I think you'll get something special. But anything is possible in this fallen world. You might get something different from what you think. You might be dissapointed. You might get something that totally changes how you think about me, or my games, or games in general. You might get something you never read or play. You might get something really cool.
These are intentions, not promises. These are the inspirations that have come to me in dreams. These are my starting points.
The dark is where we begin and end, where we question and experiment. How has the past shaped the present? How does your light shape the darkness? What are you willing to try, and what are you willing to give up?
BLACK will be a troupe-style game that uses live action techniques and movement through physical space to shape a prompted investigation into a disruptive life event, and the discovery of how to move on.
Without others, there is no self. What gets you out of your head? What bridges the gaps between hearts? Who deserves your love, and what happens when it is denied? How do you make life better? What's worth risking it?
RED will be a scenario-based game that uses tight time management and physical object play to drive quick decision-making in volatile situations, and then explore the impact of those decisions on relationships to others and to the self.
Within all of us there is a bright light. How do you cultivate that spark? What path brought you to this moment? What keeps you from embracing things how they are? What can you do better? What are you willing to accept in order to embrace the now?
WHITE will be a collaborative game that uses silence, individual movement and physical touch to ritually shape the context of the moment, discover the challenges inherent to the context, and resolve those challenges in unexpected and satisfying ways in order to find closure.
This is where I'm starting. I hope, thanks to your trust, I'll get to finish.
I do promise that these games, inspired by my dreams and guided by these colors, will arrive in your hands. Each will be realized in the intangible, in 1s and 0s, as well as in the physical world, a book or box of pieces or deck of cards or bundle of printed cloth, to enable the play of each game. The games will be playable and as suited as I can make them to enable actual play - they are experimental games, but not pure experiments.
I do have a general scope in mind. These will each be more like my microgames, my poster games, or Masks of the Mummy Kings in scale and ambition, and less like World Wide Wrestling, Annalise or Imp of the Perverse. Focused, specific, suited to their content, without more explanatory or optional material than is necessary.
The timeline is long. I have at least two other projects, with more standard approaches to funding and getting them into the world, between now and when I think it's even vaguely realistic to complete these. You'll need to trust me to keep these games going alongside my other work.
You are trusting me with a lot.
I'll do my best to be worthy of that trust.
Risks and challenges
This is a Break Kickstarter project. I'm breaking what I consider the "minimum" stage of development to bring one of my projects to Kickstarter for funding - this project is about funding the process, not the products, and aiming to keep me going as an independent creator while I work to make these ideas reality.
The games might (and probably will) change as they become more real. I won't bait-and-switch, but if the process demands that a game change substantially, I will follow the needs of the design. I will keep backers up to date with how things change, as they change.
The other "break" is in the timeline - this isn't going to show up in less than a year, at best. And that's just a hope. I'm setting the delivery estimates far out, and we all know that estimates are just that. It might take even longer to finish these games. It might also be quicker!
Since I'm promising physical products, there's always a risk that things like production costs, shipping and fulfillment will end up pushing things back even once the games are complete. Because the deliverables are so vague at the moment, the funds raised through this project aren't necessarily what I'll need to produce them - I'm committing to delivering the final things no matter what, whether there's campaign funds to cover it or not. So, there's a possibility that I'll need to make some production decisions based on economic factors. I'll do my best to make something worthy of your trust, but you won't know what that entails until the process is much further along. Neither will I!
I will have other games come out between when this funds and when these games are done. This will not be my only project, or my only active Kickstarter. If I run into issues or are delayed on those projects, it may very well push this one back as well. That's the nature of the beast.
As with all of my Kickstarter projects, I'll maintain open communication about progress and obstacles that come up along the way. Since this one is so long term, I might not have much to say for long stretches of time. I'll do my best to communicate why that is and when backers can expect more information as we go.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
