As you move, you can see objects from all different angles, making them appear as though they are actually right there in front of you. With Depth-VR’s motion control system, you can even physically interact with these objects!
Depth-VR launches as a platform for amazing, immersive gaming. We’ve developed 15 demo games, to package with Depth-VR, with many more on the way.
We’ve also developed an easy to use unity plugin and SDK so developers can quickly and easily make their creations Depth-VR compatible. In addition, Depth-VR will work with 3D modeling and medical data visualization in the near future.
We built Depth-VR to bring affordable, reliable, vivid, and above all cool 3D display effects to any screen. Before the advent of real holographic projection technology, we believe a software algorithm simulating these effects is the best way to achieve our goal.
Head tracking technology has existed for a long time, but few developers have tried to develop this concept further and bring it to consumers. Professional-grade products such as Z-Space are too expensive for most consumers, while other products don’t even support 3D. We decided to make a head tracking system based on inexpensive and easy to manufacture hardware to help bring this technology to a wider market.
Depth-VR uses a combination of stereoscopic 3D and head tracking, so you can feel a sense of depth as you observe 3D scenes from many angles. For ordinary screens, we use red and blue 3D to ensure your left and right eyes see different perspectives, while our polarized glasses fit perfectly with almost any 3D display on the market.

Depth-VR is incredibly easy to set up, requiring 3 simple steps:
- Prepare your screen; 2D screens are fine, but 3D screens are perfect.
- Attach the monitoring tower above your screen, plug in the USB cable, and install the driver.
- Turn on the tracking glass, enter the Depth-VR app center, and enjoy!
How it Works:
From positioning lighting to optical data transmission, Depth-VR is all about the magic of light.
Depth-VR consists of three hardware components; 3D glasses, infrared tracking tower, and motion controller. Using infrared light and advanced computer vision algorithms, Depth-VR detects and tracks active infrared markers on the glasses and motion controller in very complex environments. Depth-VR provides continuous and stable 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) data for both the glasses and controller.
Our 3D motion controller uses the same tracking technology as the glasses; we use one infrared LED to detect its spatial position, and IMU sensors inside the controller to measure yaw, pitch, and roll data.
The controller acts as a three dimensional input device without the need for Leap Motion. While not as flexible as Leap Motion, the controller has more robust performance in the following aspects:
- Accuracy: The Depth-VR has a single location point, which provides a more stable X,Y,Z output compared to Leap Motion, which calculates a dense 3D cloud.
- Reliability: Strong background light can interfere with Leap Motion, while the controller has a very reliable marker. It can be tracked as long as it is within sight of the tracking tower.
- Reliability of orientation: We use MPU-9150 to provide orientation data for applications. For example, it can be used as a gun in a shooting game.
We provide an easy to use Unity Plugin for 3D application and game developers. Just drag the plugin into the C# script of your camera to convert from general 3D applications to Depth-VR applications. For other engines we have developed easy to use SDKs.
For computer vision developers, we have opened all low level data, including 6DOF data of the glasses and controller, the physical size of the screen, and full access to the camera control, including access to the left and right camera raw image data, control of the camera’s refresh rate (up to 200Hz), exposure time control (accurate to microseconds) white balance, and gain value.

- High speed tracking: Depth-VR tracks your head movement with an extremely low latency of only 10ms (1/100 of a second)
- Range: Depth-VR tracks head movements in a 140 degree space, up to 2 meters distance.
- Leap Motion: Depth-VR works with Leap Motion, so you can control Depth VR games using only your hands!
After a year of development, we’ve made a lot of progress. Our team has increased from 2 to 12 members, and our vision of Depth-VR’s future is our driving force to overcome obstacles. We believe we are releasing the true potential of head tracking technology.
Why we need you
From the beginning, we’ve hoped that you would be just as excited about this amazing visual experience as we are. We thought about making Depth-VR an open source project, but found that most people can’t build their own devices from open source projects.
For the best user experience, we decided to make Depth-VR as a standard product, and put it into mass production. We’ve completed all the design, but we still need your help to mass produce Depth-VR. We’d also appreciate your feedback so we can make Depth-VR an even better product. We hope you’ll support us and help bring Depth-VR to life!
Future uses for Depth-VR
The Depth-VR 3D visualization system is certainly not limited to entertainment applications. In fact, we think there will be many other uses, such as 3D modeling and medical data visualization:
- Three Dimensional Modeling:
Current 3D design software is quite complex, as it involves creating 3D objects on a 2D plane. We have always dreamed of creating 3D scenes using a 3D workspace: in the future, when you put on Depth-VR glasses, you can enter a 3D drawing space where you are free to create 3D models. We believe that 3D design will take full advantage of Depth-VR’s capabilities, including its light weight and its ability to be used for a long time with no dizziness.
- Medical Data Visualization:
For precise operations, determining the relative positional relationship between objects becomes very important, such as the longitudinal position of blood vessels and nerves. A likely use scenario for Depth-VR is teaching the 3D structure of the human body.
- Multidimensional Data Visualization:
The whole team is focused on new technology research and development; we all have a deep technical background, and define ourselves as a research and development team dedicated to bringing the most advanced and sophisticated technology to the market.
We believe that the ultimate technology feels so natural you forget it’s there. Once our funding reaches $150,000, we will upgrade Depth-VR’s software so that our monitoring tower has gesture tracking capabilities. We will work with the Air Fingers team to achieve this goal.

Risks and challenges
We have a very mature and well-defined technology, and have already determined our manufacturing process. Depth-VR’s simple device structure also allows for easy assembly. If we are on schedule to complete funding, we will complete mold design before January 2015. However, due to the Chinese New Year and factory holidays, shipment may be delayed until the end of March.
