About

New demo content for every 10% funding milestone!

Space Station Continuum is a building & management sim based on the past, present, and future of humans in space.

Beginning in the 1970's at the height of NASA's Apollo Applications Program, Space Station Continuum puts you in charge of your very own government funded space station.

You'll design and launch new modules, manage power generation and heat dissipation, direct research into new technologies and more. All while your astronauts conduct experiments, produce goods, eat, drink, breathe, sleep, and exercise - as long as your station can provide everything they need!

Technological progression in Space Station Continuum is separated into eras - each based on a different period in spaceflight history.

Each era has its own unique technologies, spacecraft, music, and more.

With time, effort, and good planning, your station will become less and less reliant on supply shipments from Earth.

Technologies like orbital hydroponics, asteroid mining, and advanced 3D printing will eventually allow you to become completely self-sustaining.

Just don't forget to research meteor detection...

Humans have been travelling into space for a long time now.

The vehicles we use to get there may have changed, but one thing remains the same - we always come back down to Earth.

What if we could change that? What if we could build a permanent home among the stars?

From Skylab to Salyut - Space Shuttles to reusable rockets. Space Station Continuum draws inspiration from the past, present, and future of human spaceflight.

I had my first in-person experience of the NASA space program in 2011 - standing with hundreds of thousands of people on the Florida coast to watch the final launch of the Space Shuttle. It was the end of an era for purely state-funded space travel, but the beginning of the commercial space revolution we're seeing today.

Two years later I found myself at the NASA Ames Research Center participating in the Dark Side Of The Jam - A weekend-long NASA-sponsored game jam to encourage interesting games about space and space exploration.

It was an inspiring event where I had the pleasure to meet many NASA employees who were just as excited about games as I was, and Space Station Continuum has been brewing in my head ever since.

The gameplay of Space Station Continuum is heavily inspired by some of my favourite management sims including Prison Architect, Rimworld, and Big Pharma. With themes and other elements influenced by Kerbal Space Program, Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis, and classics such as 1985's Project Space Station.

The Past

Development of Space Station Continuum began in early 2017 with a sketch on the back of an envelope.

The first concept drawing of the game - February 2017
The first concept drawing of the game - February 2017

From there it went through a series of early prototypes to figure out the core mechanics. These prototypes focused primarily on the module attachment and heat flow systems.

Then in May of 2017 things kicked up a notch when I began working on Space Station Continuum full time. Shortly after that I found some excellent collaborators in the form of Jay Knox and Michael Clark. Jay and Mike have been working on the project since mid 2017, and are responsible for providing the artistic talents required to bring Space Station Continuum to life.

The Present

Today, Space Station Continuum is in pre-alpha. Many of the core mechanics and simulation features are functional and undergoing continuous improvements based on testing by a small group of players.

Current features include:

  • Space station construction
  • Launching supplies and equipment into orbit
  • Electricity generation, storage, and consumption
  • Heat generation, flow, and dissipation
  • Astronauts - with wants and needs to guide their activities
  • Basic EVAs (Extra Vehicular Activities)
  • Multiple time periods with different spacecraft and equipment

You can try some of those features right now in the free demo on Steam or itch.io.

The Future

With the foundations laid, Space Station Continuum is about to enter the next phase of development: Adding more content, more features, and building out the research & development system, which will allow you to put your astronauts to work to unlock new technologies and progress through time.

An early version of the Tech Tree
An early version of the Tech Tree

An important part of this process will be the feedback provided by Alpha Testers. Between now and the Early Access release next year, updates to the game will be delivered by Steam on a regular basis. Every bit of feedback you provide - either on the Steam forums or on the private development Discord Server - will go directly into making Space Station Continuum the ultimate space station management game!

The Closed Alpha will begin 2-3 months after the Kickstarter finishes, and will include all backers at the Alpha Tester tier and above.

Next year we'll release in Early Access with everything fully playable up until the end of the Apollo Era. Major updates will follow every few months, each bringing the next Era's worth of research, equipment, spacecraft, music, and more.

Name an Astronaut - Pledge £40 / $52 or more

Ever wanted to go into space? Well now you can! Kind of...

Before the game launches in Early Access, you'll be contacted to provide the following details for your Astronaut:

  • Name
  • Date of birth - affects the eras when they'll be available
  • Occupation - affects the tasks they'll be most efficient at
  • Biography - A paragraph or two about your Astronaut's life

All of this will go into your Astronaut's Profile on the Crew Selection Screen that players will use when planning a launch.

Your astronaut profile picture will be randomly generated. You could be serving aboard space stations all over the world for years to come!

We reserve the right to reject any inappropriate content.

Plus all previous rewards.

Be an Astronaut - Pledge £75 / $100 or more

Get your face in the game!

In addition to all of the information you provide for the Name an Astronaut reward, we'll ask you to provide a photograph of your face. Our resident pixel professional will use that photograph to create a one of a kind pixel portrait to appear alongside your astronaut profile. This portrait will appear in every copy of Space Station Continuum worldwide!

We'll also send you a digital copy of your portrait to use on Discord, Slack, Twitter, or anywhere else you might need an avatar.

LIMITED TO 70 BACKERS.

Plus all previous rewards.

Be a Mission Controller - Pledge £750 / $1000 or more

This is an extremely limited reward for only the most dedicated of space enthusiasts.

You'll work closely with us to create a character to serve as head of Mission Control for an entire era. Your character will be the main point of contact for the player when dealing with everything happening back on Earth.

We'll create a unique pixel portrait of you including your choice of clothing and head wear which will feature prominently at many points in the game.

We'll also send you a digital copy of your portrait to use on Discord, Slack, Twitter, or anywhere else you might need an avatar.

You'll consult with us on your character's speaking style, and even write some lines of introductory dialogue - making your character a true representation of your real self!

ONLY ONE MISSION CONTROLLER IS AVAILABLE PER ERA, SO THIS REWARD IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO FIVE BACKERS.

THE CHOICE OF WHICH ERA YOU'D LIKE YOUR CHARACTER TO APPEAR IN WILL BE ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS.

We reserve the right to reject any inappropriate content.

Plus all previous rewards.

So far Space Station Continuum has been an entirely self funded project. Last year I started working on the game full time, and every cost associated with developing and promoting the game has been paid for with savings from my previous life as a Software Developer.

Funding it this way gives me an incredible amount of freedom to create the game exactly the way I want it to be. Kickstarter, the closed Alpha, and the Early Access process are all very important elements to the design of Space Station Continuum - and the more people join in the better the game can be!

Hitting the £11,000 (~$15,000) funding goal will pay for everything needed to finish the core features of the game and all of the content for the Apollo Era. At that point the game will release in Early Access on Steam, and development of additional content updates will begin.

Risks and challenges

There are two major things that can go wrong when developing a game - not having the skills and not having the money.

Having spent the last year working on the foundations of the game I'm confident in saying we have the skills to finish the project. The free demo available now on Steam will show you our progress so far.

The budget for the game has been carefully considered and is based on an extrapolation from the cost of development so far. It may seem low compared to other games, and that's because it doesn't include a salary for me - the lead developer.

The money raised here will be spent purely on art, music, and other expenses for the game.
