Legend has it that Dutch company Venz invented hagelslag in 1936. After receiving multiple letters from a 5 year old boy asking for a chocolate bread topping.
Everyday there are 750.000 slices of bread eaten with Hagelslag as topping. In a year the Dutch eat 14.000.000 kilo's of hagelslag. That makes it the most popular topping in the Netherlands.
In Holland 6% admits to eating Hagelslag directly out of the package.
