We're gonna need a bigger warehouse!

Nature Aware (Issue 1)
Nature Aware (Issue 1)

Short Version: Nature Aware magazine needs more resources to expand and meet reader demands. Nature Aware Media (the publishing company) hopes to have a small office and warehouse space, print magazine issues, and be able to reach thousands more people.

This is a publication born out necessity. As 2019 began, I searched for a better way to tell wildlife conservation, ecology, environmental issues and animal rescue stories. What dominates the online scene are stories about catastrophe, mega fauna, endangered species and dire predictions. While those things are important and factual, I aim to tell stories that inspire, entertain and uplift, and are written by vetted sources.

Facts matter.

I reached back into more than a decade's worth of journalism experience and came up with a refined concept. Nature Aware Magazine is mostly written by research scientists and animal rescue staff. There's also a healthy dose of humor and some unique perspectives about the natural world.

Magazines today tend to fill half (or more) of their pages with advertising. This is due to two things; being reliant on advertising for their main source of revenue and cross marketing between products, services, or organizations and the publications themselves. I don't have to tell you that puts objective journalism into muddy waters.

Nature Aware Magazine will NEVER exceed 10 pages of paid advertising.

Starting with Issue 2 we aim to keep each edition at 40 pages or more, per issue. That means you'll never see more than a quarter of our pages feature advertised materials. What's more is that we seek out folks who will take out a cost effective full-page ad, thereby reducing the "visual noise" seen by our readers. Honestly, some magazines I love to read are a cacophony of advertising. This allows us to concentrate on the important part of publishing a periodical - the magazine articles!

If you look at issue One (you can read the entire issue here for free: http://fliphtml5.com/mdly/czpg), you'll immediately see how we're different. Our content writers are out in the field, doing research, and telling untold stories.

Who is Nature Aware Media?

Well, basically, it's a one-person* operation right now. That person is me, Rick Wood, a former newspaper journalist, documentary filmmaker, author, and wildlife rescue volunteer. Nature Aware Media is a licensed business in Washington State and a registered trade name.

This doesn't define who I am, but I am also: a combat veteran, profoundly Hard of Hearing/Deaf, live with combat PTSD, and am technically homeless.

Part of my goal for fundraising is to expand to a point where I can staff the magazine, pay freelance contributors, print more than 750 copies of each issue, have the space to house printed copies, and grow Nature Aware Magazine's circulation.

I was amazed at the readership of Issue One. Within five hours of putting the issue link out, we had more than 500 readers - not clicks, but actual readers! We also have more than 840 followers on our social media page, and they engage with us daily. So, what it tells me is Nature Aware Magazine truly has the content people want to read.

On my own I can't expand the magazine. I'm going to need a grassroots effort - from folks who not only care about the natural world, STEM diversity, factual content, and interesting subjects, but also people who support small business,  veterans, and people with disabilities.

*Editorially, the magazine is a team effort of volunteer editors, content writers, a few contract freelance artists, and myself. Nature Aware Magazine's operations, planning, layout, ad sales, website upkeep and marketing is done by me alone.

Upcoming Issues will feature sloth rescue, giant pandas, African elephants, killer whales, sharks and much, much more!

Risks and challenges

Right now, the editorial calendar has Issue 2 publishing on November 4, 2019, and Issue 3 will be released Feb. 3, 2020, with Issue 4 coming out in early May 2020. Several factors could derail that. The biggest risk is an issue that would be delayed by unforeseen events, printing delays, natural disasters, or publisher health issues.
My mitigation plan for any emergency contingencies starts with communication. I'm a transparent person, and I will share struggles or difficulties, just as quickly as I will triumphs and success. Also, I have already paid for the digital operations (website, domain names, layout programs, and publishing platform). So, all of the tools needed to make the magazine are already fully funded.
