About

We're re-launching this initial fundraising campaign in early May.

One Nation Under the Gun is a feature length documentary film recognizing that the issue of guns and gun violence in America is more nuanced than what the national media would suggest. We rarely ask why is there a rise in gun sales and an increase in gun-related suicides.  Instead the debate often gets bogged down in the meaning of the Second Amendment.

Currently, Americans seem hopelessly divided about the role of guns in society, with the public dialogue focusing on increasingly polarized positions. In reality, we have complex, and often contradictory, relationships with the gun. From soldiers who protect the nation and hunters who carry on a long tradition, to the casualties of inner-city violence and the anonymous victims of suicide, our attitudes about guns are as diverse as our people. Any grand pronouncement about the appropriate relationship, or policy prescription to address gun violence, feeds into the two-dimensional caricature of the debate.

To broaden the conversation, it is necessary to expose the myths and misconceptions that limit dialogue. This thoughtful and thought-provoking documentary will not tell you what to think, but will offer new ways to think about the issue. It will recover some of the missing voices and explore the various worldviews of Americans who are often neglected in the gun debate.

Some topics to be explored include:

American Mythology and Political Identity

John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are enduring American icons, epitomizing the rugged individual, the frontiersman, the lawman. Their on-screen characters taught generations of boys how to be real men. Through the magic of Hollywood, history was re-created and an American identity, wedded to the gun, was manufactured.  This new identity is more entertaining than factual. And one of the beneficiaries of this new American identity is the gun industry.

Larger Context of Debate

Throughout American history, every major transitional period (e.g. Antebellum, post Civil War, Prohibition) has included a national discussion of the meaning, and even reinterpretation, of the Second Amendment. This film explores the current period of economic, political and social change, including the loss of blue collar jobs and the effects of neo-liberal policies, majority-minority voting blocks, and the first Black president.

Suicide, Inner-city Violence, and Domestic Violence

Although mass shootings get the most media coverage, the highest number of gun-related deaths result from suicide, predominantly of White, rural men.  The next category is homicides in concentrated areas of inner-cities, predominantly African-American men. And finally, women killed by their intimate partners is another tragic source of gun deaths.

Philosophical Analysis: Guns & Democracy

Campus carry laws take effect in Texas in August 2016, allowing license holders to carry concealed handguns on college and university campuses.  This begs the question of whether a free and open exchange of ideas is possible when the threat of violence is present. Proponents on both sides share their views.

Distribution

Southern Oregon Public Television (SOPTV) is our public television presenting station. SOPTV will package One Nation Under the Gun for distribution over public television networks. This means that your contributions are tax deductible.

What will the money be used for?

Acquisition - To access the most credible and knowledgeable sources, the team must travel. We anticipate over 50 interviews in a dozen or more locations across the continent to secure the best content and visual evidence for the film. Costs include: production crew, airfare, travel, equipment rental and more.

Editing -  The post-production process covers everything from interview transcripts through the final edit, including audio mixing, computer graphics, color correction, closed captioning and final master distribution.

License images and footage - Nothing of this nature is completed without using footage and imagery that must be purchased. Archival imagery is an expensive and necessary component of any documentary film.

This film is timely and necessary to expand the gun debate.  Your support will help make it happen.

Risks and challenges

This project has been a labor of love so far. We have already contributed much time and personal resources. But we must now ask for your support. We have a strategy for fundraising with three phases. The first phase is this campaign. With a successful first step, we can continue to acquire footage, and compile a rough cut to get organizational support. And if needed, the third phase will seek underwriting support from organizations that share our desire to re-frame the debate.

Our greatest challenge is that if we do not raise enough in any one phase, we must take time away from production to focus on fundraising, thus delaying the real work. Your financial support today will ensure timely completion of the film and expansion of the debate.
