Hidden away in the lost and forgotten corner of the map lies the Kingdom of Gartania. A land of Knights, and Chivalry, and unique and eccentric armour. A land of knights waiting for their stories to be told.
These knights are not your average group of Sirs and Ladies. They’re brave, strong, cunning, good, evil, loved, loathed, creative, destructive, and, sometimes, slightly obsessed with fish! They all have a tale to tell, will you be the one experiencing their tale first hand, or will you lend your hand to ensure their task is complete?
Just because you can’t see their face doesn’t mean they don’t have a story to tell.
Back in 2016 a certain game called Shovel Knight inspired me to create my own set of eccentric and unique knights. I created 15 knights in total, lead by a character called Kettle Knight. I had a lot of fun creating them and from there I eventually developed them into character cards; fully coloured postcards, complete with descriptions as to who they are on the back. The following year I wrote and produced a short comic adventure about some of the knights chasing a dragon that stole a house! And then, in October of 2018, having further created a ridiculously overextended family tree, I decided to redraw the original 15, and the extra 31 new knights, for Inktober. It took longer than I thought it would (as things usually go) but I eventually inked up all 46 knights and started thinking of how to further develop them into a book that people would be interested in reading.
And that’s when I thought of D&D!
So I sat down, coloured all of the knights up, and formatted their character traits into stats for Dungeons and Dragons!
I’ve designed Knights of Gartania as a 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons supplementary book that both character players and DM’s can use to either play as the characters (from level 1), or be used as interesting NPCs in an adventure set in a mysterious medieval kingdom.
Each of the character sheets is stripped down to be as basic and essential-only as possible. I did this to avoid lots of tiny hard to read text, and so I could fit more information about the knight’s character, weapons, family ties, and background onto the page.
Each characters spread will be themed respectively towards the knight. No two character sheet will look exactly the same!
The book contains plenty of information for both the DM and players alike.
For players all of the character sheets have been listed with Level 1 stats, along with basic information about alignment, personality, and what items they start the game with.
For DMs I’ve also included information on how the character would progress through the levels so they can alter the stats if they need the knights to be higher levelled NPCs for the players to interact or fight with.
Atleast 100 pages of content including:
- 46 knights
- 46 Character profile pages
- Over 100 original illustrations
Whether you’re a veteran group looking for a unique adventure with eccentric characters, or new to D&D and want a fun and interesting starter character to get you adventuring across the many kingdoms, Knights of Gartania provides something that everyone can enjoy!
Page - £10
Knights of Gartania in PDF format, for those on a budget or who prefer a digital version of the book. All tiers after this will also receive a copy of the PDF.
Squire - £15
Knights of Gartania in a perfect bound soft cover book. The book will be A5 portrait in dimensions (148 x 210mm, or 5.8 x 8.3in). The book is roughly 100 pages long, but may increase if certain stretch goals are met.
Lone Knight - £25
The same as the Squire tier, except this one will be signed by the author and have a drawing of one of the knights in the cover too.
Knight of the Round Table - £30
A copy of the book, plus a physical copy of the Knights of Gartania comic I made in 2017. Limited availability as I currently have a very limited stock of these.
Knight of the Triangular Table - £35
A copy of the book, plus the full, 15 card, collection of the original Knights of Gartania character cards. See how the character designs have progressed from then to now! Each card is fully coloured with their own theme colours, and the reverse side has a short description about the knights. Limited availability as I currently have a very limited stock of these.
Knight of the Square Table - £40
A copy of the book, plus a set of posters that are going to be produced and will be printed using a risograph printer. I plan to have 3 designs in total which have yet to be created.
Knight of the Rectangular Table - £40
A physical book plus a copy of my inktober from last year. It is a risograph printed book full of fictional cities that I created. A lot of them are impossible, impractical, and amazing to look at, and all of them are great ideas for D&D locations. Extremely limited availability as the only ones left are all I've got - there will not be a reprint of it.
Knight of the Pentagonal Table - £50
A signed copy of the book, PLUS, one of each of all the other physical rewards!
Knight of the DM’s Table - £250
For those who really want a bigger involvement in this book you can come up with an idea for another knight that will be featured in the book with their own character stat page and description. If you pick this option I will talk to you personally about how you want the character to be, and discuss how they can fit into the narrative and family tree of the Gartania Kingdom. Also includes all previous physical rewards. Limited availability as I currently have a very limited stock of these.
As I have already mentioned these knights are not all of the characters that live within the Kingdom of Gartania, I have already created a family tree that is 100 characters strong!
So for every £250 over the goal I will add 2 new characters to the book! Plus there will be special stretch goals at larger achievements!
Here is a list of stretch goals that I hope to unlock as this project get further funded!
At £1750 the wife of Firefighter Knight; Lady waterfall, and her sister; Burne the Water witch will be unlocked, and the book will increase in size from A5 to B5!
At £2000 the two daughters of Burne, and mother to Botany Knight; Puddle Witch, and River Witch will be unlocked, and the book shall change from a paperback to a hardbacked volume!
At £2250 the characters Lady Leather, and Pocket Witch will be unlocked!
At £2500 The parents of Herb Knight and Topiary Knight; Lord Willow and Lady Ash shall be unlocked!
At £2750 the wives of Cauldron Knight, and Stitch Knight; Lady Ladle, and Lady Tome will be unlocked!
At £3000 the wives of Blacksmith Knight and Flint Knight will be unlocked, as well as a colouring in book featuring just the lineart of the knights for you to colour at your own leisure! Everyone who backs a physical version of the project will receive a colouring book.
And for over £3000? Well i still have a lot more characters available, and I shall unveil them as they get unlocked!
Any additional knights that get unlocked have yet to be created so will set the production time back as more get unlocked.
As of right now I've done most of the work already! I've fully coloured all 46 of the knights and have the character stats ready for input. I just need to design and and fill all of the character sheet pages, which is something that will be done before the end of this Kickstarter campaign!
Risks and challenges
This is my second Kickstarter project that I've done, (the first being the Hotel Anthology Magazine), and from that I've learnt some lessons about time management, and how long it actually takes to make stuff! With this project I have already done work ahead of time so that the finished project should be with you as soon as it's printed. The only major delay I can see will be if there's something wrong with the print process somewhere, or this project gets so overfunded that I'll have to create another 50 characters for the book!
I like to think that the project goal is attainable, but only time will tell.
The book printing will be handled by the amazing Comic Printing UK (CPUK), and any Risograph work that I get done will be printed through the Holodeck, which is a Birmingham based risoprint company.
Overall, I am incredibly excited to be working on this project and I look forward to seeing what you think!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
