On The Cusp, Off The Cuff is a feature-length documentary about the New York City improv comedy community. Here is a teaser trailer.
The film will feature performers from the city's three main long-form improv training centers and theaters: the Upright Citizens Brigade, the Magnet, and the People's Improv Theater. The film will consist of a mixture of interviews as well as rehearsals, shows, and backstage footage.
I've already collected over 60 hours of interview and show footage and am currently editing the project. I have a 50 minute rough cut finished and hope to have a 50-60 minute fine cut by May of 2012.
So, a bit about me: my name is Nate Dern and I've created a production company - NOJL Films - in order to complete the project, though I'm basically making this film on my own. I've been a writer/performer at the UCB theater in New York City for a few years now, and have also been an aspiring filmmaker for some time, so I've decided to combine those interests in this project.
My main goal is to give a small glimpse into what it is like to be a part of the growing world of long-form improv comedy in NYC, answering questions like: What is "long-form improv" and how is it different from what I've seen on Whose Line Is It Anyway? Why do people spend so much time and energy on an ephemeral art form that essentially disappears forever as soon as the show is over? Why do people speak so passionately about something that so often involves such silly subject matter on stage? These questions and more will be discussed.
Practically speaking, I have my own equipment (shooting on a Panasonic GH1 and recording sound on a Zoom with Sony lav mics) and am planning to edit it myself. What I need the money for:
* music and scoring: $2000
* animated interstitials: $3000
* sound mix: $900
* color correction: $1000
* festival submission fees: $600
* promotional materials: $500
* TOTAL = $8000
I'm very excited about this project and would be happy to take any suggestions or answer any questions.
