About

The story...

Nasu Rabi (Old Bear) is the story of a fourteen-year-old boy, Darius, whose world is turned upside down. The peace of a cool autumn afternoon is broken as barbarians invade his small, remote village. The raiders capture or kill everyone, leaving only Darius behind. Alone and afraid he can think of nothing else to do than to follow the desolate trail north and attempt to rescue his mother or die trying. On his journey he is befriended by an old man, Arthengal, who agrees to mentor him and help him with his rescue attempt. In a journey that takes them hundreds of miles across an unfamiliar land, Darius and Arthengal form a fast friendship, endure struggles, and discover that there may be more sinister forces at work than just a random marauder raid on a small fishing village.

The book and the journey...

I started writing Nasu Rabi (Old Bear) in 2017 after a long hiatus from writing. Writing has always been a creative outlet but life has just seemed to get in the way of any serious undertakings. For years, stories built up inside of me and I just shelved them in the back of my mind, until finally, I couldn't hold them back anymore. Nasu Rabi was the first one to escape and make its way onto paper. I spent about a year writing it and plan to spend most of the next eight to nine months fine tuning it for publication. The experience so far has been very fulfilling and nothing could make it more so than seeing the journey through to its end.

Why self-publishing?

In the past I've tried the traditional publishing route with other works. What I found was a brutally competitive market that was hard to penetrate. During the intervening years the introduction of Amazon and small batch printing houses has changed the face of publishing. Authors now have many more options to get their work in front of readers. Additionally, the growth in popularity of comic conventions allows authors to interface with readers and fans more directly. However, with self-publishing comes the added responsibility (and cost) of making sure the work is worth the readers' time. Professional proofreading and editing services are available but aren't cheap. It also falls to me to find a cover artist that I think can do the book justice. The last, at least, I found in Stephen Najarian, an artist that I met last spring at AwesomeCon in Washington, D.C. I've also met several accomplished editors during the past year or so who can help me refine the work if I can raise the money.

How can you help?

Your pledges will help me meet the initial costs, get the publishing process moving in the right direction, and bring the story of Darius and Arthengal to life.  I've set a very modest goal of $12,000 to meet the minimum startup costs. Any funding beyond that will help cover additional expenses and will help make the project that much more of a success.

Basic startup costs:

  • Initial Editing Services - $2,000
  • Cover Art - $2,000
  • Promotional Art - $500
  • Printing (approx) - $3,000-$4,000
  • Shipping - $1,300
  • Kickstarter fees - $1,080
  • MD Sales Tax - $720
  • Copyright & ISBN filings - $350
  • Marketing, promotional material and AMS Ads - $50 - $1050

Additional costs once initial goal is met:

  • Kickstarter fees - 8%-9% for sales beyond initial goals
  • Printing - varies by volume but about $3.32 per paperback or $13.60 per hardback
  • MD Sales Tax - 6%
  • Shipping - $3.50 per book
  • Proofreading services - $2,000
  • Advanced editing services - $5,000 - $10,000
  • Professional fantasy cartographer to draw a map of the world - $2,000 - $5,000
  • Convention booth fees - $2000 (I'd like to attend three in 2019 and costs vary per convention)
  • Website - $200
  • Additional online marketing, promotional materials, travel, distribution services for rewards, etc.

Timeline (estimated)

  • November 2018 - Complete second draft
  • December 2018 - Secure editing services
  • March 2019 - Complete final draft
  • April 2019 - Assemble final draft and order printed copies
  • May 2019 - Begin Kickstarter rewards distribution
  • June 2019 - Order convention copies
  • July - September 2019 - Convention attendance
  • July/August 2019 - Retail sale launch on Amazon

Project Team

This list will grow as we build more relationships but without the help and hard work of these individuals the book would not be a success.

Cover Artist - Stephen Najarian - I met Stephen at AwesomeCon in Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2018. His landscapes were amazing and we have been discussing different cover art ideas.

Alpha & Beta Readers - Jenny, Dan, Linda - The alpha and beta readers have provided so much valuable feedback to help me sand down the rough parts so the book is ready for me to work with an editor to polish it.

Risks and challenges

I am well into the second draft and should finish about the same time as the Kickstarter campaign ends. If the campaign succeeds I will need to find an editor that I trust to do the work justice. The editing process itself will be long. I'm hoping that my estimate of four to five months is fair but I may find that it takes longer than expected.

I have found a couple of prospects to do the small batch printing but I will need to order sample copies from each to confirm the quality and reliability of the services before making a final decision.

The cover artist and I have had several discussions over email regarding possible cover art concepts. We still need to make a final decision and then he needs to complete the work. Timing should not be a problem as he should be able to complete the work while the editing process is underway.

While I encourage anyone outside of the U.S. to order the digital copy of the book shipping costs would be prohibitively expensive for any printed copies.
