About this project

Minimum Goal Funded... Please Help us Fund our Stretch Goals!

Thanks to the incredible support of all our AWESOME BACKERS, our Kickstarter campaign has reached our minimum funding goal of $20,000!

THANK YOU for your overwhelming support for our grassroots, community pet publication and our vital work for the animals!

Help us reach our stretch goals so we can grow!

Remember, $20k was the minimum goal we had to reach in order to get our funds... but we have a few days left and I truly believe we can meet our stretch goals, too!

STRETCH GOAL #1: $22,000 = FUNDED! THANK YOU!!Reaching $22,000 will let us purchase steel magazine boxes so that Nashville Paw magazine can be picked up on sidewalks along West End Avenue, East Nashville, Marathon Village, and in the Murfreesboro Square to make it more accessible to the public and to broaden our reach? $2,000 can make it happen so we can reach so many more people with our message!

STRETCH GOAL #2: $25,000 ... HELP US REACH IT!If we can raise $25,000 we can also purchase more metal magazine racks for many of the places that cannot distribute our magazines without them!  I believe we can raise $25,000 so we can reach so many more people with our message!

Please keep sharing our Kickstarter Page over the remainder of our campaign with as many friends as you can via Facebook, Twitter and email! I am confident that with your continued support, we can meet some of the important stretch goals on our "dream list"!

Thank you so much for sharing our journey as we grow, for sharing our passion for the animals we serve and for sharing your generosity with us as a backer! YOU ROCK!!!!

Much Love,
Heather and the Crew at Nashville Paw Magazine :>

What is Nashville Paw Magazine?

{about our publication}

Can a magazine change the world? We believe it can. Can it unite a community, rally for positive change and save innocent lives?

Indeed, it can. In fact, ours does!

Nashville Paw is Middle Tennessee’s award-winning community pet magazine, proudly supporting animal rescue and welfare since the launch of our first issue in April 2006. Our print magazine is provided FREE across Nashville and Middle Tennessee, available for pick-up at more than 350 locations such as Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, luxury hotels, popular cafes and local shops as well as pet businesses of all kinds. Each issue is also available in digital format on our website. Now in our seventh year of print and online publishing, we have grown to serve a loyal, active and engaged readership of more than 50,000 pet lovers across Middle Tennessee and beyond.

While our magazine has been a complete labor of love since day one, our team of dedicated volunteers and freelance staff (who donate much of their time!) are proud to professionally and beautifully produce top-quality design, photography and editorial. Each issue, our full-color publication combines award-winning photography, thoughtful and engaging editorial and trusted local resources. Our popular departments deliver the local pulse on everything from pet-friendly events, holistic pet care and positive training to animal welfare news and education. Meanwhile, we feature adoptable pets from local shelters and rescue groups on our covers and shelter spotlights, helping to find families for the many homeless pets in the greater Nashville area.

Why Should You Care?
{our positive and vital community impact}

If our magazine simply stood alone as an exciting, fresh and fun pet publication to hold in your hands, we'd be pretty proud with that much. But the truth is, our true success is that Nashville Paw is so much more than just a magazine! We are, at our core, a grassroots community effort that is deeply committed to helping the animals in our area and beyond by empowering our readers through informative editorial and trustworthy resources as well as by actively networking local animal lovers for our common cause.

In addition to our fast-growing print and online presence to more than 50,000 readers, we host thousands of guests at a variety of pet-friendly community events throughout the year and participate in local animal welfare efforts. We have helped countless animals find their forever homes through our cover features and adoption spotlights. We also create educational public service announcements to shed light on animal welfare issues, such as our Spay + Neuter PSA Video, which has gained nearly 6,000 views on YouTube since February 2012, and our newest Pit Bull PSA Video starring Mike Wolfe, star of the hit TV show American Pickers.

Through our print and online magazine, our community events and outreach work, as well as through our social media outlets (such as the more than 5,000 fans on our Facebook page), Nashville Paw connects with animal lovers in our community on a daily basis. We have come to know our readers on an intimate and personal level, and, in turn, they fully support our endeavors. In fact, our mission would not succeed without the dozens of dedicated volunteers who make it happen every issue, as well as the many local advertisers who make it possible to keep our magazine free to the public.

SIMPLY PUT: Nashville Paw magazine is Middle Tennessee's most vital platform for effecting positive change for animals in need as well as a beautifully produced publication devoted to the pet-friendly Nashville lifestyle. Time and time again, our readers tell us how important we are to our community and to their lives... and we want to ensure that we remain a free resource for many years to come!

The Little Magazine That Could
{how far we have come}

When founder and publisher Heather Dowdy moved from Chicago to Nashville in 2005, she immediately realized a niche that needed to be filled. After her home became a revolving door for the countless stray dogs and cats that roamed the streets of East Nashville, after discovering pit bulls neglected on chains in so many urban yards, and after witnessing the lack of pet spay and neuter in the community, she knew she had to step up and do something in addition to her own rescue efforts.

Over the months that followed, Heather networked with local shelters, rescue groups and individual advocates to address needs and brainstorm solutions. She found it ironic that in a city that was fast embracing a booming pet market and pet-friendly lifestyle, more than 10,000 pets were still being euthanized in Nashville's animal control shelter each year. During this time, however, it became apparent that Nashville was not lacking in animal lovers or advocates; rather, it was simply lacking the platform for which to bring all of those advocates together in a united network in order to effect large-scale positive change.

That's when the idea for Nashville Paw was born. Merging her passion for writing and animals, Heather set aside her work as a freelance magazine writer and set out to create her own publication that would serve as the voice for Nashville's animal community. Using her life savings, she launched the first issue in full color on newsprint, printing just 8,000 copies and delivering them around town in her car. With just a few paid advertisers on board, it took everything she had.

Since that first issue, Nashville Paw has been a labor of love, often struggling issue to issue but always confident in our longterm mission and staying power. And now, in our seventh year of publishing, we print 21,000 copies each issue, deliver it online in digital format and serve 50,000+ readers! We have a core base of loyal local advertisers who fund production and sponsor events so that the magazine can remain a free resource to the community. We've come a long way, but still have far to go... and that's where YOU come in! :)

Vital Growth in 2013
{why we need this funding to succeed}

Here's where YOU come in! Now in our seventh year, we have the wonderful problem of experiencing growing pains: our local paid advertising and tiny budget can no longer support the community demand for growth. Our fast growth in readership demands more copies and more distribution points as well as sidewalk boxes and magazine racks. The high demand for editorial space requires upgrading our magazine from 32 to 40 pages.

To accomplish these growth strategies, we need to be able to attract larger advertisers. While our amazing local advertisers have been the key to our success thus far (read: we heart them!), they too struggle with labor-of-love budgets. In order to successfully fund the continued growth of our magazine, we need to bring larger advertisers and national pet companies on board, and to get their attention, we need to take our publication to the next level. Thus, we feel it is time to say goodbye to our newsprint days and upgrade our magazine to coated matte paper, finally giving it the beautiful, professional paper quality it deserves. We have already, in good faith, fronted the cost to print our first issue of 2013 on this paper, and it is hot off the press and looks and feels amazing! However, we need your support to maintain these vital upgrades throughout this year.

Our goal of raising $20,000 in funding will provide the following essential growth for Nashville Paw magazine throughout 2013:

A) Upgrade the magazine from a self-cover newsprint publication to beautiful coated matte paper with a UV cover coating, which will produce a more professional and upscale publication, securing larger advertising support for longterm stability and growth. This will also give the magazine an archival quality, making it a publication that readers are proud to display in their homes and keep around for future reference.

B) Increase the magazine from 32 to 40 pages, allowing for much-needed additional visual, editorial and advertising space.

C) Expand our distribution and outreach by increasing number of copies printed, installing outdoor sidewalk boxes and additional magazine racks.

With these three steps in place, Nashville Paw can accomplish the growth needed in order to secure the future of our magazine and to ensure that it remains a FREE community resource to help animals in need!

What's more, I truly believe that together, we can not only meet but surpass our goal of $20,000. If your support does bring us above and beyond our minimum goal, additional funding will be used to hire much-needed support staff to help carry the load!

THANK YOU!
{we mean it... and the animals thank you, too!}

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Believe us, we know that money doesn't grow on trees and that you could do a lot of other things with your wallet. Like take a trip to the beach (not that we're advocating that), or buy an insanely irresistible pair of shoes (read: adorable but really uncomfortable shoes).

But YOU have made the choice to do something awesome and to contribute to a vital and worthy cause! You have chosen to fund creativity, community and positive change -- and, for that, we are truly humbled, honored and grateful.

Really. We simply cannot continue to move forward without the solid backing to make it happen, so we sincerely thank you for standing beside us and making this growth a reality. We truly appreciate each one of you, and every dollar, and promise to provide updates as we go along... YOU are now a member of our team, a special part of our Nashville Paw family, and we look forward to the next phase of our amazing journey... TOGETHER!

Cheers!

NASHVILLE PAW MAGAZINE IS...

FOUNDER + PUBLISHER: HEATHER DOWDY

Heather launched Nashville Paw in April 2006 in an effort to support local animal rescue and welfare. Her freelance writing has appeared in a variety of national pet and travel magazines as well as other local publications. Her work was featured in the hardback coffee table book, "Little Dogs: A Love Story", published by Hodder in 2006. She was honored to receive the 2007 Community Media Award from the Nashville Humane Association as well as to be named a winner in the 2011 Women of Influence Awards in the Nashville Business Journal. She is a volunteer rescuer with Animal Rescue Corps and is grateful to share her heart with her husband Chris and their rescued dogs Shelby (a German Shepherd / Collie mix), Molly (a Chow Chow / Keeshond mix), and Briley, an American Pit Bull Terrier they rescued from euthanasia at a local shelter.

ART + DESIGN DIRECTOR: LAUREN FINNEY

The owner of Black Orchid Design Associates, Lauren joined our team with our August 2011 issue and has truly taken it to the next level with her stunning design! With an extensive background in the design and development of everything from large-scale museum exhibits to ad campaigns and publications, her signature clean, modern design brings beauty and functionality to our magazine. In addition to her incredible talents, Lauren is an avid animal lover and rescuer of local feral cats. Lauren is technically a freelance designer, although in truth, she donates most of her time to make this publication a reality. In short: she rocks big time!

STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER: AMIEE STUBBS

Amiee won Top Two Best Photographer in the 2012 Nashville Scene Awards and in addition to her work with our magazine, is the Official Photographer for the Nashville Zoo and photographs for Animal Rescue Corps. She earned her degree in Photography from MTSU. Each issue, she makes our magazine pop with the most amazing cover photography as well as contributing her beautiful images to most of our feature editorial -- and she does much of it free of charge just to support our mission! A native Nashvillian, she lives with her husband Dan and their dogs Halpert, Beesley, Eva and Buster. You can check out her amazing photography at amieestubbs.com.

SALES ACCOUNT MANAGER: MARGE WILD

Marge is our commission-based Sales Account Manager as well as a longtime volunteer, animal advocate and close friend. She is the owner of Home Run Pet Care and serves as a volunteer for Animals Rescue Corps as well as a foster guardian for Agape Animal Rescue. In addition, she serves as an incredibly dedicated board member for our Nashville Paw Foundation. We are lucky to have her dedication and passion on our team! Marge is thankful to share her world with her partner, Karry, their rescued cats Possum and Gracie, and their rescued dogs Bette Davis and Destiny.

MANY, MANY VOLUNTEERS
We simply would not exist without the dedicated efforts of dozens of volunteers who deliver 21,000 magazines each issue and staff our many community events! Some of these amazing individuals have been on board since our very first issue seven years ago, and are still going strong. Our publication succeeds because of the compassionate individuals who devote their time to our shared cause. We are incredibly proud of our Nashville Paw family... and we're excited to welcome you to it!

Risks and challenges

After nearly seven successful years of publishing our labor-of-love magazine, we know firsthand that any great endeavor requires overcoming unexpected obstacles and challenges as well as taking on a reasonable amount of risk.

We have experienced our share of struggles, such as muddling through an economic crisis that put some of our local advertisers out of business. There were days doom encroached, threatening to shut our doors forever, but we stood our ground, worked even harder, networked even better and remained dedicated and steadfast to our mission and to the animals and the community we serve. Our supporters stood by us, and together, we weathered the worst and are now beginning to thrive again. We are immensely proud of our ability to adapt and change when required, while remaining ever determined to keep Nashville Paw around for years to come.

We have carefully assessed our needs at this time and are confident that with funding of $20,000, we can not only secure Nashville Paw magazine's place in our community for years to come, but also grow it in scope, production and reach to better serve our community. In the event that we face unexpected struggles, we will of course keep you posted and will do everything in our power to overcome any obstacles, as we have always done.
