About

Summary of “Universities of Narrow Diversity”

When Rob Hahn’s son was denied admission to Notre Dame, Rob took action and contacted officials at his alma mater, suggesting his son’s Asperger’s Syndrome was not adequately considered during the application review process.  The email replies he received set Rob on a quest to change how colleges and universities treat neurodiversity (Asperger’s, ADHD, Dyslexia, etc.) in the admissions process, and that quest is captured in this full-length feature documentary film.

Told through Rob’s captivating, witty and passionate on-camera personality and colorful interviews with experts, officials and students from many different schools, “Universities of Narrow Diversity” examines how college admissions offices – with a focus on GPAs, standardized test scores and racial diversity – have failed miserably to admit some of the brightest individuals.    Interviews with experts – both doctors and scholars – explain in basic terms the concept of neurodiversity, why it matters and how colleges and universities will become better, more well-rounded institutions if their student bodies consist of more individuals with disorders related to the Autism Spectrum, Dyslexia, etc. The film also looks at how certain corporations like Microsoft and EY (Ernst & Young) have begun to do a better job  actively recruiting a neurodivergent workforce, recognizing the  value many of these high-functioning individuals bring to the workplace.

Not content to merely expose shortcomings, Rob challenges college administrators to put greater emphasis on neurodiversity as it applies to the application process and calls on college administrators to publicize neurodiversity statistics in the same manner racial diversity is celebrated related to the admissions process, holding fast to the view that the more diverse a student body, the stronger the overall academic experience for the entire student body.

Risks and challenges

Completing a documentary film, especially in a timely fashion, can be challenging. However, many of the interviews for the film have already been completed. In addition, film director Rob Hahn's previous project, regional Emmy©-nominated "Hi, Gene! Meet the Real Senator McCarthy," was edited in six months.
