About

James Durham, A Commentary on Revelation. Volume 1: Chapters 1-3. 504pp. 7x10, hardbound, smith sewn, distinctive book cloth, matching dust jacket and endpapers (uniform across the NPSE series). "If I had lived in [Durham's] time, I should never, I think, have wanted to hear any other preacher." "Whatever Durham has written is very precious." "Durham is always admirable." "Durham is always good." "Durham is a prince among spiritual expositors." "After all that has been written, it would not be easy to find a more sensible and instructive work than this old-fashioned exposition. We cannot accept its interpretations of the mysteries, but the mystery  of the gospel fills it with sweet savour." Charles Spurgeon, Sermon on Isaiah 8:20; Commenting and Commentaries. Pledge for the book or become a NPSE series sponsor at the various levels offered. For sponsors the volumes do not just become part of the sponsors’ personal libraries, but the sponsors themselves become part of the books’ history, which themselves become part of each sponsor’s family history.

Summary

  • From Naphtali Press is offered a new print series of Puritan, Presbyterian and Reformed books with prospects to publish new editions of classic works never before republished in modern texts (e.g. big puritan works like Rogers' Naaman  the Syrian), or new translations (e.g. untranslated Calvin and other Reformers' works/letters), or new discovered manuscript works (e.g. see the Dickson below). Hearkening back to the days of subscription and patron based publication, NPSE will make use of crowd funding to fund each series year and each of the volumes offered each series year. With the first title offered each year there will also be the opportunity to sponsor that year by becoming a series sponsor and receive all the titles that fund and other rewards.
  • We plan to offer three titles for the 2019-2020 series year, the inaugural year of this new series. The current drive offers NPSE volume I, the first volume in a set of three planned of James Durham’s very large Commentary on Revelation (1st vol. on chapters 1 thru 3). First published in 1658, the work remained out of print for centuries until a printing in 2000. That text was not without its flaws and not a critical edition (a table of errors will be included in vol 3, D.V.). This new text has been collated with the prior ten editions as well as with a newly uncovered 1653 manuscript of the original form of the lectures,  all the references researched and footnoted, and will be a definitive edition of this work when completed in three volumes (2 and 3 forthcoming in subsequent series years). Later this year or early next, D.V., we will offer two more titles to round out the inaugural launch year of this series. These are Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici, a critical edition, and first time ever in print, David Dickson’s 1628 Sermons on Jeremiah’s Lamentations, transcribed and edited from a recently discovered manuscript. More information below on these titles.
  • You may simply pre-order or sponsor the Durham book (if USA ship to) and receive a copy if the project funds, or you can really help by becoming a Series Sponsor at different levels (USA and Intl). NPSE Series Sponsors receive all the titles that meet their funding goals in the sponsored year, are recognized in each of these in the front series sponsor section, receive a special book plate, and access to news and discussion of future title selection. The more sponsorships raised in this drive the lower the goals needed for the other titles this year; or if there is enough sponsorship of the series, we may even be able to move off a crowdfunding model altogether.
  • Goal: $12,000. This just gets Durham on Revelation v1 into print with cost covered and a small portion of the true labor cost (and allows for international distribution). The more above and beyond this which can be raised, the more solid footing the NPSE series will have. 100 series sponsors would put the series on a good grounding, but if we were to obtain 200 or 300+ annual series sponsor pledges, this would open up significant project possibilities such as multi-volume multi-year translation or transcription projects, and we would be able to move to more of a pre-publication model with significantly reduced or little reliance on a crowdfunding model.
Durham on Rev. v1 Mock-up

Detailed Project Description.

For over thirty years Naphtali Press has published fine quality editions of Puritan, Presbyterian and Reformed literature. It has become clear over that time that many works of that period never republished or still in manuscript to this day, do not have sufficient interest to justify the risk of time and funds to produce a text to publish in a reasonably large print run, merely hoping some day to at least justify and cover the expense. For this reason I have launched Naphtali Press Special Editions (NPSE). This series will be produced in a distinctive over sized 7” x 10” format. The volumes will be sewn bound hardbacks with matching end papers and dust jacket, and distinctive book cloth binding.

The goal of NPSE is to use crowd funding as the functional equivalent of the old time subscription based publication and the even older patronage/sponsorship tradition, and to both crowd fund the entire series, as well as each volume. The plan is to offer up to three titles a year, the number varying due to complexity of that year’s projects. However, if enough commit to be annual NPSE series sponsors, we can move to more of a pre-publication model, or if still retaining the crowdfunding model, significantly reduce the threshold needed for each title to “fund.”  The goal is not to have much excess inventory, and to publish enough to meet the demand for a title. However, everything is "fundable" if the desire and sponsorship is there to give a title wider distribution.

All series sponsors will be recognized in a series sponsor section at the front of each volume after the series short title page,* and receive copies of the titles produced for the duration of their sponsorship. Thus the volumes do not just become part of the sponsors’ personal libraries, but the sponsors themselves become part of the books’ history, which become part of each sponsor’s family history.

As noted in the video (with a debt of gratitude to Reformation Scotland's Matthew Vogan and Al Smith for producing), the inaugural volume will be the first of a projected three ~500 page volumes of a new edition of James Durham’s classic puritan Commentary upon the Book of the Revelation. The text has been revised and collated against all prior editions and also against a newly discovered manuscript text covering the first half of the lectures. Unique text not appearing in prior printed editions will be given in notes and in an appendix, including some full lectures that differ from that published. Once funded, there is about four to six weeks of remaining work before going to print, and at latest we hope to have the Durham book distributed to by January 2020 if not sooner, D.V.

The other two 2019-20 titles each also only require four to six weeks final work to complete and should follow with fundraisers over the coming months and be complete if funded at latest by the end of first quarter 2020, D.V. These titles are a new critical edition of Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici, or the divine right of church government. This was almost but not quite an official work of the Westminster Assembly, defending biblical church government against an attack by the Erastian parliament intent on running the church itself. The text is ~400pp with 30 percent restored/corrected text over that in the 1995 Naphtali Press edition. The last of the three titles planned for 2019–20 will be a first edition of David Dickson’s 1628 Sermons on Jeremiah’s Lamentations, transcribed and edited from a recently uncovered manuscript (~304pp). David Dickson (c. 1583–1662) was one of the most significant ministers and theologians during the decades of the Second Reformation in Scotland. He was part of the revivals in the 1630s centered near his ministry in Irvine and he became a professor of theology at both Edinburgh and Glasgow. He also influenced the production of one of the first popular level series of bible commentaries. Works on the book of Lamentations are rare and this sermon series was preached during a particularly disastrous time during the Thirty Years Wars. Thus, these sermons uncovered within the last year and transcribed and edited for publication are an exciting discovery and add to the literature on several fronts. We will share more on these titles once we get passed this first drive for the first volume of Durham on Revelation.

The plan for subsequent years is to follow roughly this same pattern with the change over being the summer of each year between series years, and sponsorship renewals and funding drives happening then. In addition to completing the Durham on Revelation, future projects could be multi volume editions of large puritan classic such as Daniel Rogers’ Naaman the Syrian (a 900 page folio, big enough to burden one of Naaman’s mules, as Spurgeon wrote) and other classic English Puritan and Scottish Presbyterian works. The possibilities are wide open if the support is there for a project, whether it is editing these puritan classics never yet republished, or doing first time translation work, or transcriptions from long lost manuscripts.

I am energized about the prospects for this series and if enough interest is there, we will see some important work in print again or even for the very first time. A key to success will be how many sponsors are interested in annually supporting the Naphtali Press Special Editions series, as sponsors are essentially helping the R&D for otherwise cost prohibitive projects. Please consider one of the sponsorship levels offered for the current title of Durham on Revelation and for sponsoring this NPSE series year and note some of the special rewards offered for the higher levels of support.

  •  … students of the [Westminster] assembly can thank Chris Coldwell for these carefully produced transcriptions of the two surviving manuscripts of the Larger catechism. Chris has been untiring—and remarkably successful—in his efforts to further and foster new research in the post-Reformation period. His own productions have found their way into the hands of more than one thankful historian in Cambridge, and into many libraries around the world. This elegant new production of a much-neglected theological text is a most welcome addition to a quickly-growing assembly corpus. — Chad Van Dixhoorn, Ph.D.

Great River Arts notes that “Golgonooza Press is an atelier dedicated to the highest quality letterpress projects, from the design and fabrication of type to the printing of select portfolio projects. Carr and Ferrari have been approached by artists, writers, publishers and poets to realize unique, museum quality print editions and are known throughout the print world as masters in their field.” “Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari are two of the most revered letterpress masters in the field today; their work is in museums, private collections and print collections worldwide.” This project was one of the most technically challenging the pair had in many years, due to the heavy large sheets, and the publisher’s demand that the ornate paper not be marked by any punctures for registration. Dan, who passed in 2012, and Julia have produced an heirloom quality piece to last generations.
