About

 What?

NanoLab is raising funds to develop new pigments and introduce new artists paints using nanotechnology. In this campaign, we will create a trio of warm colors,  namely, a brown, a yellow and a red.  These new pigments will be formulated into acrylic mediums initially, pending oil versions to come in the future.  Carbon brown will  be based on a graphene oxide platelet with controlled dimensions to deliver a brown instead of a graphite-like grey.  Our yellow and reds will be synthetic nanocrystals of iron & molybdenum oxides, and nanoscale rubies.   Our next rounds will focus on cools, primary colors and special effects.

 Why?

The pigments in paints haven't changed for hundreds, in some cases thousands of years.  The last 20 years of scientific advancements  has enabled us to synthesize nano-structured compounds that have never been seen in a paint, or on a painting. Using nanoscience, we control both structure and size, which can bring amazing color purity, unique effects, extreme fastness, and tinting power to both acrylic and oil paints.

How?

While other companies are literally pounding rocks together to make pigments, we want to offer artists a new way forward. NanoLab will use synthesis techniques to create pigments and paints that are both socially and environmentally friendly.  We will be tackling some big problems, like removing Cadmium from your yellows and reds, and synthesizing unique nanoparticle colors that are alternatives to conflict minerals like Lapis. Our vision is to run a series of four campaigns, a warm, a cool, a primary, and a special effects campaign, to create colors and finishes that will please and astound.

We also want you to feel good about how your paint was made.   NanoLab is sourcing our reactants from firms with green practices, choosing the most efficient and waste free processes, and is looking to minimize the environmental impact these paints will have, before and after you use them.

Why Us?

In 2016, NanoLab launched Singularity Black, our void -black that was originally funded by NASA. It has recently been added to the Harvard Pigment Collection,  and has been used across the globe in shows by top artists, and celebrated internationally in the press.

Singularity Black garnered a huge, positive reaction from the art community.

Using that same nanomaterial, we developed Gravity Black, our oil based, hueless black.

In late 2018, we released Morgan White, a hueless matte white acrylic that uses a new nanoscale pigment.

These first NanoLab paints are now headed for shelves at Artist & Craftsman.  We benefit greatly from our collaboration with artists, who test, give feedback and keep us headed in the right direction.   NanoLab is building its reputation in the art community, as a company that listens, cares, and responds, and can guide paints out of the stone age.  Come see the world of our imagination.

Risks and challenges

We are starting this campaign, focused on just a trio of colors, yet knowing that we could fill an entire spectrum with new colors using nanoscience. A risk we will face is that some nanomaterials will need some extra scrutiny before they can be proven safe to work with. We are already part of the ACMI, an institute that helps us test to ensure safety in art materials under LHAMA. Some of those studies will take time and funding to complete. Where possible, we will start with known-safe materials that can be synthesized at the scales we need. Another risk we face is that if some synthesis routes are too expensive, the paints will not reach the shelves for you to buy in the future after this development stage ends. We will draw on 20 years of process knowledge to avoid that, and do our best to bring this campaign to a successful conclusion.
