Nanojems has a big dream - to revolutionize jewelry, fashion and art with a light-scattering marriage of technology and meaning. We see this happening through the design and sale of our pendants, rings, lockets, desk pieces, projectable Instagram and Facebook mashups, and wall art and also by making meaningful fund raising pieces for causes and campaigns. We can engrave many thousands of words on crystal and sapphire gems and mount these in various fixtures such as we plan to do for the core of this Kickstarter project to honor the number pi.
We're going to use our patented micro-engraving technology to engrave the first million digits of pi on single-crystal gems and then mount them on pendants, in lockets, and in display pieces. Not only are we offering a teaching and presentation pack but we also think this is a great way to honor pi, Pi Day, and Einstein's birthday all in one and we want to share it with the world (especially before Pi Day 2015, which will contain a once in a life-time sequence of the digits of pi). We've proven these concepts before with our record breaking engraving of a million digits of pi on 3" crystals and with our Hobbit project where we engraved 92,000 words (552,000 characters) on two gems, mounted on a gold-plated copper dog-tag. Both of these examples used text sizes larger than needed for display and coverage so we plan to use smaller text size for the pi gem to pack the digits in a smaller space but we are also considering highlighting certain sections of the number or adding additional labeling with larger text size on the side of the gem.
Sterling silver pendants have been designed and manufactured and the first design concept for the gem pattern on the pendant has been completed.
To help get the word out for follow-on orders and to celebrate this accomplishment before the 2013 holiday season and Pi Day 2014 and 2015, the $25 reward level is a custom T-shirt that will display 9000 digits of pi. We've also made a custom calendar that shows each day as its first location in the number pi.
In addition to making the T-shirts, calendars, custom art, mashups and legacy pieces offered as rewards, the majority of the project funds will be used to finish the semiconductor fabrication masks for the compact pi gem design, perform the fabrication of the gems, acquire and engrave pendants and lockets, and assemble the final pieces. Funding this project will also help us further develop our software and hardware infrastructure so we will be able to make more custom designs in the future and eventually have an automated online design platform that will allow anyone to upload images and text and design their own pieces for print on crystal or sapphire.

We are also unveiling Instragram and Facebook Mashup gems that include 9 to 100 of your favorite images and up to 20,000 words of text ( about you and what you want to say! ) that make a custom pattern that can be used to create crystal, glass or sapphire pieces for collection, sharing, displaying and projecting ( with your iPhone or Android flashlight or other light source ).
And finally, we are offering custom artistic pieces for display in personal or public collections. Entry level pieces can include crystal or sapphire of various colors with patterns that highlight the beauty of this new artistic media. Higher level pieces are custom legacy pieces crafted with images and hundreds of thousands of words selected to add meaning and make a lasting and unique expression.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk was that this would have been our first 1 million character engraving. However, we just achieved the 1 million digits of pi goal on August, 23, 2013. Now the biggest challenge will be to reduce the size of the engraving for pendants but we think the larger three inch size will work great for desk displays. For the pendants we found that managing the million digits and getting everything ready for mask fabrication was the main challenge and now that we have our mask files we can simply scale the text size down. In our record attempt on August 23rd we were using 5X larger text than needed so we are confident the digits will scale down to fit on the pendant - we just need to prove that.
