About

I have already written a book about my experiences as a female Marine in Afghanistan in 2010. The book began on my blog, www.bambooandbananas.org, as a way for me to stop having nightmares about my experiences. After multiple attempts at getting help from the Veteran Affair’s offices, I realized that I was on the verge of suicide from the nightmares that filled my sleep or from the mental fatigue of the insomnia from the fear of the nightmares. Something had to change, so I began to write. Over the course of a year, I published chapters of my story every few days and a book began to form. After much support and encouragement from readers around the world, I decided to approach an editor to see if I could make this story into a book that might be able to expose a story that hasn’t been told before.

I received input and support from Neva Sullaway,  a local San Diego writer and editor, and was told that I needed to go big with this manuscript, and she reached out to Deborah Grosvenor, who is a book agent located in Washington, D.C. Deborah is the editor for the Hunt for Red October, and has edited and represented many books over her career. Deborah directed me to an editor she trusts: Molly McCloskey. Molly is an award-winning writer, and has edited books and worked with military, trauma, and various other areas of writing that match very well with my book.

Molly wishes to work with me to make this story complete and effective. We came up with a plan to edit structurally and develop myself as a character, because I wrote the book as personal therapy and, well, I know myself. But the audience doesn’t.

This Kickstarter would cover the cost of this editing campaign, and any costs associated with the writing. All of my personal costs are covered by my current job, so any money given will directly go to the book and getting it out to the world.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk is that the book won’t be picked up by a publishing company. I have been warned that a few scenes are too raw for a publishing house to accept, and I might need to be willing to cut the scenes out.

The timeline of the book comes down to how fast Molly and I work, and whether Deborah wants to represent the final product. I am told that publishing schedules can be filled quickly so I am hoping the end of 2019 is a decent goaltime for complete publishing.

I can also self-publish if a publishing house doesn’t pick me up.
