About this project
My DEADTOWN Series
They call it Deadtown: the city’s quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders—but Victory Vaughn, Boston’s only professional demon slayer, isn’t exactly human…
The series follows the adventures of Vicky Vaughn, a shapeshifter who kills other people's personal demons for a living. Vicky is one of the Cerddorion, descendants of the Welsh goddess Ceridwen. She lives in Deadtown, Boston's paranormal-only district that was formed after a mysterious plague struck down two thousand Bostonians in a matter of minutes. The entire city mourned—until the dead rose again three days later.
As a professional demon slayer, Vicky exterminates the demons that give people nightmares or cause them to lie awake worrying at night. But she's got bigger demons to deal with—those of her own past. She's bound to the Hellion that killed her father, and her demi-demon "cousin" is determined to throw open the doors of Hell and lead an army of demons into the human world. With the help of her werewolf boyfriend, her formidable shapeshifting aunt, and a teenage zombie apprentice, Vicky struggles to hold back the forces of darkness that would overrun Boston—and the world.
Here are some things reviewers have said about my series:
"This is a fantastic series with well-developed characters and action-packed scenes that will leave you holding your breath until you discover what happens next." –Night Owl Reviews
"If you haven’t started this series then you are missing out on one of the most original urban fantasy settings to date." –Bite Club
"If you love urban fantasy, then buy Nancy Holzner’s books right this minute. If you are not sure whether you like urban fantasy, then pick these up the next time you’re in the mood for a change a pace. I think you’ll like them." –Fantasy Literature
"Make sure you reserve a place for Holzner’s novels on your bookshelf." –RT Book Reviews
"Deadtown will appeal to urban fantasy readers who like a taste of the new. Here’s to sequels that explore Vicky’s Welsh folklore origins, as well as expanding the cosmology of her world. Holzner has created a big canvas for adventures, so it’ll be rewarding to see that canvas filled in, book by book." –SFRevu
The Project: TALES FROM DEADTOWN
DEADTOWN, the first book in the series, begins three years after the plague that created Boston's Designated Area 1, aka Deadtown. For years, I've been wanting to write the story of that plague as a prequel to the series. PLAGUE, which is outlined and ready to go, looks like it'll be novella length, probably around 100–120 pages.
But that's not all I want to include. I also have several short stories set in Deadtown's world that I plan to package with PLAGUE. Some are brand new. Some are based on outtakes from my published novels. Some stories that have appeared online, revised and expanded. So TALES FROM DEADTOWN will be a collection that includes a novella and five or six (or more!) short stories.
Many readers have asked me to write a prequel about the zombie plague, and it will be a fun read for fans of the series. For readers who are new to the series, TALES FROM DEADTOWN will be a good way to try out Deadtown's world and see if you want to read more. No familiarity with the published books necessary!
I thought it would be fun to make the writing of a Deadtown book more interactive. Readers have been asking for a prequel, and I know there are many questions you want answered about how Deadtown came to be. Using Kickstarter will let me provide supporters with updates on the writing. And you can leave comments with questions and issues you'd like addressed. I can't promise to fit them all into the final story, but I'll try!
Because I'm publishing TALES FROM DEADTOWN myself, as a sideline to the books published by Ace, I'll use the funds to pay for cover art, editing, and formatting, as well as for time to write. Artist Robin Ludwig has designed a wonderful cover that fits right in with the other books in the series, and I'm hoping to work with her to provide postcards and possibly other goodies for the different reward levels.
My main goal is to write the prequel novella and get TALES FROM DEADTOWN into the hands of readers. All contributors will receive a copy of the ebook. And you'll get it a full month before it's available to other readers.
In keeping with the interactive idea behind this project, contributors at certain levels will get story-related perks: voting for a story featuring your favorite supporting character, an exclusive short story never to be released to the general public, or perhaps a zombie with your name!
If the campaign reaches its goal, I'll announce new rollover points with new benefits for supporters. I'm happy to take suggestions for the rewards you'd like to see.
A NOTE ON THE TIMING: I'm currently writing the fifth book in the series and will send it to my editor in September. After that, I'll jump right into the writing of PLAGUE. I expect that to take a month to six weeks to write. While PLAGUE is being edited, I'll write and polish the other stories in the collection (they're in different stages of completion). I expect to have the entire collection finished in early 2013. Other rewards, such as postcards, stickers, or novels from the series, will be sent immediately after I receive funding.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!
