Thank you!! Perfect. The detail is superb; I can see this thing looking right through me. The mesh is wonderfully and seemingly organically woven. I have the small size. As an object in isolation, it is very pleasing to hold in the hand. Even the box was presented well. Thanks.

Any chance of an update on production? It's always nice to see how these things progress.

Hi, congratulations on achieving your goal! I was wondering if you had an estimated delivery time? I'm hoping to receive in time for a friend's birthday in October.

      Thanks, Chris.

Hi David, everything is going according to plan. We'll post an update very soon about our progress with the order and delivery phase. Thanks again for your support!

Hey Guys hope you are all going well, my desk is looking pretty bare at the moment, I have promised the desk he will have a dinosaur before October. Is it still on track?

@Rob The 3D-REX can only be printed in "strong flexible plastic" due to its complexity. The other materials on Shapeways do not use the same production technologies and thus could not be offered. You need Synthetic Laser Sintering to make the 3D-REX.

The only material that works is Alumide (same as the "strong flexible plastic" material but with aluminium dust mixed in) which we have actually used to print one sculpture. However, the result wasn't as good as with the normal "strong flexible plastic" because we had to increase the mesh thickness which made it really "blocky" (and more expensive).

Thanks for the response. Could you let me know what printing option you have chosen from shape ways? As I recall, they offer about 9 different materials to print from.

    13. Silver on

No problem, I'm glad to be a part of the project. :)

@Silver Yes, less than 24 hours to mark the end of a very exciting 35 day campaign! We can't wait to see 90+ 3D-REX sculptures in the same room! It's going to be amazing :) Thanks again for your support!

@Rob Halsey. Thanks! In answer to your questions:

      1. We've printed 2 full size wall sculptures and 15 desk sculptures. The wall version came after the desk version so all the structural issues were resolved by then. The two wall 3D-REXs came out perfect and we've printed 4 desk sculptures of similar size with no quality issues whatsoever. The 3D-REX is printed using SLS (selective laser sintering) which can handle very complex structures with ease.

      2. Regarding the printing time, I'm not sure. I'll ask the manufacturer and get back to you asap!

      3. Our manufacturer is Shapeways ( They are #1 in the world for consumer 3D-printing services.

Let me know if you have further questions and thank you again for your support!

      Few quick questions:

      (1) How many of the wall sculptures have you printed to test them out?
      (2) How long does it take to print out an individual sculpture?
      (3) Who are you using to do the printing?

      Thanks ... great project!

@Michael McMenamin Thank you for your kind words! Yes that's fine. Just pledge an extra 20 pounds and we'll send you two at early backer price. When we send out the questionnaire (the one where you give us your address) at the end of the project just make sure you specify that the 40 pounds is for two 3D-REX sculptures. Thank you for your support!

@Frederic LM. Amazing! Thank you so much for your support! The 3D-REX you've selected is an "Early Backer" special so there are only five available at that price.

I'd juste upgrade to the wall one !
I wonder how pieces do plan to print of each size ? Is it a limited edition ?

I'm a lucky backer of the medium size and i would love to pledge for the wall one but it's very expansive....
      That's a great project ! Good luck !

@Ws Ralphie Good question. We chose the t-rex for this project because, in our opinion, it is the dinosaur with the most visual impact in its fossil form. More generally, the project is all about the contrast between old and new, ancient natural forms versus complex 3d-printed geometries. So that's why we chose a t-rex as opposed to a tiger for example.

As to whether or not it is the start of a collection, we don't really know yet. I must admit though, that a Triceratops sculpture, especially a wall-mounted one, would look very nice with this kind of geometry!

@namisu what made you choose a T-Rex as a model for this project? Is this the begining of a dinosaur/predator collection?

    29. namisu 7-time creator on

@Ws Ralphie @Silver, Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to comment! If you have any questions about the project, we'll be more than happy to answer these via an update or through this comments section. Please don't hesitate to ask :)

Proud of backing such a refreshing project. Simple, elegant and original. A "must-have" in any JURASSIC PARK fan's house.

An interesting project... I'm not going to be an early adopter of 3D printing hardware, but stuff like this is what makes the whole technology so fascinating. Backed for a T-Rex mini.

Also: 27 backers and I'm the first one to comment? Ah well, I guess I should be honored! ;)
