What is Nabes?
Nabes Is a Fashion Consumer Electronics Company. We design and market our patented Nabes video sunglass system; A true Breakthrough in Video Eyewear. The First and Only system that quickly transforms Nabes fashion sunglasses into lightweight comfortable stealth video eyewear.
We’re changing the game in video eyewear, making it what it always should have been - Fashionable, attractive, comfortable and cool.
With Nabes, the era of the uncomfortable, conspicous, ugly, "gawkward" sci-fi look for video eyewear is over.
Our unique patented system lets you to conveniently carry our patented micro-binocular video viewer that clips into a variety of high-quality stylish Nabes sunglasses using our patented quick mount system.
With your iPod, iPhone, smartphone or media player, Nabes gives you a comfortable, high-quality private theater experience with stereo sound and video on a virtual 75" big-screen. This is like looking through binoculars or a viewmaster where the picture you're looking at is a large, clear image that appears to be floating in space. When trying it for the first time, most people say, "Wow, this is like I'm in a theater!" It's the most comfortable way to watch TV or a movie and the eyestrain and hand strain of trying to hold up a smartphone to watch a TV show is gone forever.
We found in our research and trials that peripheral vision is important for people to be comfortable using video eyewear in public settings. They want to remain aware of their surroundings. So our compact viewer is designed so that when it's installed you can easily see around you so you'll know when the flight attendant is coming around for drink orders!
Nabes is compact, light and stealthy, when the viewer is installed, only you know you’re using video eyewear. Here's a photo of someone trying one of our prototypes with the viewer installed.

Our Inventor and Team
Bob Spaller is the Founder, CTO and President of Nabes LLC, a new company formed in 2010. Bob is a serial inventor and entrepreneur holding 7 patents inventing and designing many really cool products for various companies through his product development firm, BSPD. Recent product awards include Gold Excellence In Design 2006, Gold Medical Design Excellence Award 2006, an International CES Innovations 2007 Design & Engineering Award, and a Silver 2005 IDSA.
Bob has been instrumental in developing the Roomba, and the AVA Telepresence robots for iRobot and with the MIT Media Lab he was instrumental in the development of the world’s first bionic prosthetic smart leg; the iWalk PowerFoot BiOM www.iwalkpro.com. Bob has also designed military head mounted displays and video eyewear for other companies. Through his experience designing these bleeding edge wearable technologies, Bob has developed a deep understanding of what works in a great design and what consumers want in a great product.
Armed with these insights, ingenuity and coupled with his boundless creativity he formulated a completely different approach to designing video eyewear. Over the last few years Bob developed and patented the Nabes video sunglass system. The the first design patent was awarded in 2011 with more on the way. Nabes now has complete CAD design files so Nabes is ready to go to tooling and production in 2012 and Nabes has built several working prototypes to refine, research and prove the concept.
Recently Bob teamed up with several experienced consumer electronics entrepreneurs to launch Nabes LLC (incorporated in Massachusetts) to bring the Nabes Fashion Video Sunglass system to market. The team is led by CEO/CSO Kevin Sullivan who has held senior leadership positions with major CE companies such as Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Sony and Sharp and Paul Fredrickson, CMO, who has launched many brands, products and technologies for several companies including RCA, Philips and HGTV.
Nabes has secured the services of an experienced, top-notch sunglass designer to design a line of fashionable, functional high-quality Nabes sunglasses that double as your sunglasses and transform into Nabes stealth video eyewear. He has designed sunglasses for some of the world’s top brands and sunglass manufacturers are selling his designs the world over.
The team has met with some of the world’s leading electronics contract manufacturers and world’s leading sunglasses brands to discuss Nabes, generating very strong interest to work as future partners with Nabes once it’s funded.
What is Video Eyewear?
You’re on a plane, a train, a passenger in a car, or in a waiting room with time to kill but you don’t bother to watch the TV shows and movies you’ve downloaded to your smart phone or iPod Touch. Why? Viewer fatigue! Nabes is out to end viewer fatigue so you get the best entertainment experience from your smart phone.
With the explosive popularity of iPhones, smart phones and personal media players such as the iPod, there are hundreds of millions of people who travel, commute or otherwise have time to kill who want to enjoy TV, movies and games on the go, but find viewer fatigue is preventing them from getting the most entertainment out of their smart phone.
Industry analysts have said that video eyewear “offer the only comfortable way to view an acceptable-sized image from a personal media player (PMP) while maintaining pocket portability”. Video Eyewear (VE) contains a viewer with two tiny magnified video screens. The binocular effect makes the video appear as a single “virtual” 75” screen nine feet in front of the wearer.
What makes Nabes cool?
When you go out or go on trip, there are a few things you always carry; your smart phone and your sunglasses. With Nabes compact video viewer you can carry it in your pocket or purse, clip it into your Nabes sunglasses and get a private big screen video and stereo sound experience whenever you want. Nabes, is another “always carry” companion.
Nabes’ system includes a variety of fashionable sunglasses with a patented attachment feature on the inside of the bridge to which you quickly attach Nabes patented compact video viewer. Nabes viewer's so small, when installed, it hides behind the frame so others won’t notice it. Plus, its small size allows peripheral vision so you can see around it to feel safe and aware of your surroundings. That’s important for public use. The pictures below are of real people enjoying movies wearing Nabes Video Sunglass prototypes with the viewer installed….
Competitive products you might find elsewhere, design the frame and viewer as a single unit. This results in large, heavy, conspicuous, “Gawkward” appearing, stiff, uncomfortable designs many of which blind wearers from their surroundings making them undesirable to use in public.
Only Nabes can offer a patented video eyewear system with a detachable Nabes viewer that can fit different styles of fashionable Nabes compatible sunglasses.
Only Nabes users look good and know they’re using video eyewear.
Nabes has received great interest from major investors interested in later investment rounds that will get help us get into mass production. To make that happen, we need to kick off the company with seed funding that will allow us to move towards tooling and to finalize development for manufacturing that moves us forward to production. Our aim is to have the product in production and in the market by the winter of 2012.
Backers of this project will be helping us move forward towards production. Backers pledge to pay for their selected reward only if we meet the funding goal of $30,000. We’re grateful for every $1 pledged!
Your support makes that happen and more support accelerates our time to market.
Besides providing funding, all of our backers will become members of our “Nabes Backer Design Panel” to help us with the selection of sunglass designs for the initial and future sunglass designs. Once funded, we’ll be submitting designs to the group for feedback and input on styles, colors and other attributes so that we’ll produce sunglass designs our customers want. As backers, you’ll also be part of our design team!
When will rewards ship?
Once we raise our initial seed funding or more, this maintains our path to have product out before the winter holidays in 2012. So investing in Nabes now gets your holiday shopping out of the way early, gets you into a hot new product before everyone else and you get a nice discount on your pre-order! We are anticipating a $449 MSRP and Nabes backers will be able to pre-order at a nice price of only $275 and multiple units for as low as $250! This will be by far lower than any pre-order price we may have as we get closer to launch.

Prior to going into full production, Nabes will be doing pre-production runs for product testing purposes. As a special offer limited to the first top 50 pledges (in dollar amount) who have pledged prior to reaching our goal, we will provide you with a Nabes pre-production system and ask you to participate in our Nabes Beta testing program. When we go into pre-production, anticipated in the fall of 2012, we will send you a unit and sunglasses along with a survey for which we’ll ask you to help us run the units through its paces and for you to provide us with feedback to finalize product for production. Plus, you’ll be able to keep these units as a special added gift!
Q – What’s the advantage of pre-ordering Nabes now?
A – By pre-ordering now, you are ensuring you’ll be among the first consumers to get Nabes sunglasses and video eyewear systems. In addition, we are rewarding each of our backers with a substantial $170 discount off of the MSRP.
Q – When will I receive my Nabes order?
A – The exact timing will be dependent on the level and timing of funding we receive, however we anticipate that we can be going into production during the second half of 2011 ramping up for a market launch to retail for the holiday selling season 2012. The Nabes distribution team will keep backers notified of all updates on shipping timing.
Q – Where will I be able to buy Nabes?
A – Nabes backers will be the first consumers in the world in a position to order and buy Nabes. Later in 2012 we intend to have a Nabes consumer website that will include an e-commerce feature for pre-ordering and purchasing products from Nabes at MSRP pricing. Upon mass production we intend to launch Nabes at retail selectively through retail launch partners initially in the US.
Q - Will the viewer attach to any sunglasses?
A - No. The viewer will only attach to sunglasses with Nabes patented attachment system, which will be sunglasses from Nabes or sunglasses from companies who have a license from Nabes to include the patented attachment feature on the inside of their bridge.
Q – What styles will you have at launch?
A – Our current plan is to start with two styles and each year we intend to launch several additional new styles into the market. We anticipate they will be some variant of a “wrap” style. Wrap styles are some of the most popular and have attributes that work particularly well with the Nabes system. As new styles are developed in the future based on market feedback we anticipate branching out into other styles to give our customers a wider range of sunglass choices.
Q – What else can you say about the sunglasses?
A – The frames will be made from high-quality injection molded plastic and the lens will be polarized lenses that will offer UV-A, B and C protection. Our designer has designed premium sunglasses for leading sports, fashion and military sunglass brands.
Q – What are the sunglasses you use in your video and photos?
A – We are using various popular consumer sunglasses, which have been modified to include our feature as a way to illustrate and test our concept
Q - Will other brands of sunglasses be licensed to work with the Nabes system?
A – Nabes has been in on-going discussions with interested third party sunglass brands who are interested in making their sunglasses compatible with the Nabes system. This licensing process will continue after we have been funded. Once licensees a licensed, they will then work to incorporate the Nabes feature into their designs on their own schedule.
Q – How much do the Nabes video sunglasses weigh?
A - The current spec is between 2 to 3 ounces depending on the frame style. This is substantially less than any other designs.
Q – What portable devices can Nabes play video from?
A – Initially Nabes will be compatible out of the box with Apple iOS products such as the iPhone and iPod Touch, iPad as well as other video products that have a composite video, HDMI out and USB connectors such as portable media players, video cell phones and portable DVD players. The composite video connection will also easily adapt to a wide range of consumer home video products. We will also have additional accessories that will allow Nabes connectivity to a wider and wider range of analog products such as VGA and Component connections .
Q - How does Nabes connect to these products?
A – Nabes connects via a single cable that leads from the glasses to a small control box that houses the battery plus additional electronics that process the audio and video signals and contain user controls to adjust the picture and sound. The control box accepts different adapter cables that match the box to the different video outputs of popular portable products on the market. Therefore, depending on the product, the box will sit alone or physically mate to the iOS product through a Nabes accessory designed for each iOS portable product.
Q – How is Nabes powered?
A - Nabes is powered from its own rechargeable Lithium battery which will be contained in the small control box
Q – What is the expected running time for the Nabes viewer?
A – We anticipate approximately 6 hours per charge. Since the Nabes system uses less power than the smart phone or iPod touch display, the separate battery powering Nabes will extend the running time of the phone.
Q – What is the resolution of the Nabes system?
A - Nabes uses state-of-the-art WVGA (854x480) led backlit, LCD micro-displays in its viewer. This is a 16:9 wide-aspect-ratio widescreen display that has the equivalent of DVD resolution. This happens to be the native resolution of the video output from most all the devices Nabes connects to.
Q – Will Nabes have higher resolution displays in the future?
A – Nabes does not manufacture the micro-displays but we can design our viewer to incorporate new higher-resolution micro-displays from the top micro-display manufacturers in the world as their availability, production capacity, resolution and price become suitable for the compact consumer market we are seeking to serve. We expect to add such models in coming years with higher resolution and higher prices that will be compatible with all Nabes sunglasses.
Q – Can Nabes display 3D content?
A – Yes, it can display certain kinds of 3D content in the initial product. The first type is the mainstay “analyglyphic” content (the red/green) content and material encoded in the “side-by-side” 3D format.
Q – What if I wear glasses?
A - There are several possibilities/options. Depending on your vision, your image may appear just fine. Nabes can be worn over most prescription glasses, depending on the design of those frames. As an alternative and the best way of adapting Nabes to your particular prescription, Nabes will have some small frames available that attach over each of the Nabes binocular viewers to accommodate a small prescription lens to be made by your optometrist and match Nabes to your personal prescription needs.
Q – Can the sunglass frames be fitted with prescription lenes?
A – Yes.
Q – What about audio?
A – Each Nabes system has built in stereo audio delivered by high-performance Nabes in-ear, ear-buds that provide optimum noise isolation and comfort. Nabes ear-buds will include three silicon ear cushions to adapt to different ears for optimum fit and audio performance. This type of silicon ear cushion also provides an excellent level of noise reduction similar to noise cancelling headphones making them excellent for air travel or other noisy environments.
Q – Where did the name Nabes name come from and what does it mean?
A – Nabes is urban American slang that originated in the 1930’s when movie houses were being popularized by the film studios to bring movies to more and more people by spreading from downtown only locations to local Neighborhood Theaters. People started referring to the Neighborhood Theaters as follows…
“Do I have to go downtown to see that movie, or is it playing at the Nabes yet?”Nabes LLC applied for Trademark of the term and we feel that we bring new meaning to the original concept; making big screen entertainment more accessible and convenient for everyone.
Nabes LLC is a legal entity incorporated in Massachusetts and all patents and trademarks related to Nabes video eyewear are the property of Nabes LLC.
