About this project
The Santa Fe Indian Market is breaking new ground in 2012 and premiering Contemporary Native Public Art at this year’s Indian Market, August 13-19. The name of this initiative is called The Hour Has Arrived.
Although Native culture is rooted in a rich, complex and difficult history, the strength and essence of Native culture is contemporary, alive and evolving. As an outgrowth of its traditional roots, Native American expression currently encompasses a spectrum of creativity that is at the cutting edge of modern art. Part of this movement is broadly recognized as Public Art.
The Hour Has Arrived will showcase public installations by prolific forerunners in this new modality for Native American artists. Featured artists include:
Rose B. Simpson
Yatika Starr Fields
Live execution of exciting works by individual artists and special live mural collaborations will be featured during Market and completed murals will be on view at select downtown Santa Fe locations during the weeks leading up to Market until its closing. This is an inclusive, creative endeavor that will draw from other Native talent in a manner that reflects the spirit of Public Art and this project. Some of the unparalleled events taking place will be The Hour Has Arrived evening panel discussion with prominent Native public artists, a fine art exhibition of the genre on canvas, a Public Art mentorship for Tribal youth, and pop-up Public Art performances.
And bringing the best of what Native Public Art has to offer takes time, money, and good energy! We are asking for your support in providing the resources for such a creative endeavor, which will make positive waves in our communities and generations to come. Be a part of art history and take the pledge to support "The Hour Has Arrived."
