WE MADE IT! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
If you missed the campaign you can still get involved via http://www.rentheseries.com/
Ren is an action-packed and exciting web series and it's the first major production I've spearheaded since I produced and directed Born of Hope - a hugely successful Lord of the Rings prequel that has now been viewed over 23 million times online.
What is Ren?
Ren is a fantasy series, and I love fantasy! Whether it's books, games, movies, TV, web series or music. To me it's all about escaping to different worlds, battles between good and evil, fantastic characters and creatures and falling in love with the heroes.
I love the great characters and the darkness in Game of Thrones, the rich history of Lord of the Rings, the light heartedness of Legend of the Seeker, Merlin and Xena, and creating my own show means that I can combine all the things I love.
In other words: Ren will tell a serious story with amazing fights, epic scenery, a strong female lead, a splash of humour and fantastic characters we will all fall in love with.
What's it about?
When a sheltered young woman, Ren, is possessed and her face branded by a powerful ancient spirit, she becomes feared by all who see her. Even when far from home and hunted by the powerful ruling order of the Kah'Nath she refuses to accept her fate and journeys across the land to discover what she is and if there are any others like her. Joined on her perilous quest by a small band of outcasts, led by the charismatic Hunter, she discovers that the truths she has been taught may all have been lies.
What happens in season one?
The first six 10 minute episodes introduce our heroine, Ren, and the small village, nestled in the woods, which she calls home. We'll meet her father and her little brother, whom she adores, and we'll also meet her outcast mentor, Karn, who could be the link to the real story of the Marked. But all is not idyllic and we soon come face to face with the Kah'Nath, the warrior monk-like order ruling Ren's part of the world, and Hunter, a young rogue who seems to be the guardian of a Marked girl. It's a dramatic, exciting and fun start to the incredible adventure that Ren and her small group of outcasts eventually embark on.
Why a web series?
The advantage of a web series over a feature is its ability to grow and adapt through each new season. This means that nothing is set in stone and the fan community has a chance to influence and shape the production by expressing their feelings towards characters and story lines. This will make Ren an incredibly collaborative production. With this Kickstarter campaign we want you to join us on this wonderful journey right from the start! We can't do it without you!
How can I get involved?
Pledge an amount and choose a reward, it's that simple.
You do not have to be in the UK to pledge and although the campaign is in British Pounds you can contribute in any currency.
You can change your contribution amount any time before the campaign ends but any amount, even £1, is a big help for us. If we exceed our fundraising target it will just make the final product even better!
We have created rewards to fit all budgets but are very willing to add more! If you have any ideas or suggestions for rewards please do let us know in the comments section.
The rewards listed here are only the beginning! We may add more rewards as the Kickstarter campaign unfolds. There will also be stretch goals when we hit our initial target.
Here's a quick guide to each reward tier. Please see the sidebar for full details and to make a pledge.
"Amazing stuff. It's incredible to see what craftsmanship, sensitivity and attention to detail is being brought to bear on this ambitious project. Everything so far looks amazing and I can't wait to see the finished film."
Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop commenting on the original Born of Hope trailer
The contribution and participation of fans and like-minded people was what made Born of Hope such a unique project, and with your involvement I'm convinced that we can make Ren just as ground breaking and special.
Isn't making a fantasy project really expensive?
YES! To give you an idea, Game of Thrones is reported to have a budget of $6 million per 60 minute episode! Unlike a production set in modern day everything for a fantasy show needs to be designed and created. There are costumes, props, weapons, locations, visual effects and many other things that all cost money.
My feature Born of Hope was made with a budget of only £25,000 and the pie chart below shows you the sort of places the money was spent. The weapons for example cost £4340.97: although many were borrowed; the costumes cost £1809.60, the insurance cost £1376.25, the locations cost £711.25 despite most being free or highly reduced.
Based on my experience with Born of Hope I've set our goal at £35,000 but this is just a bare minimum and the more money we raise the better the final production will be.
We've added some ADD ONS!
Remember you do not have to be in the UK to pledge and although the campaign is in British Pounds you can contribute in any currency.
We have created a Ren coin!
This is the first in what we hope will be a whole set currently being designed. They are going to be used in the show but we are including them here in the campaign so that you can own them too! These will be proper metal coins. I'm just confirming the details with a manufacturer but I'm hoping for 3D embossed, bronze plated and antique finish. They will be about 2mm thick and 30mm in diameter.
These are not just a great keep sake though. They are also great props for live action role players or gamers who want to use coins in their tabletop games. The dragon side is ringed by a new alphabet of runes while the boar side says "Courage" and "Boar"
All HARD COPY PACKAGE backers will automatically get two of the new Ren coins.

Risks and challenges
We face the usual risks of any film and TV production. The production is very much in the early stages and we have a long way to go before we even get to roll the cameras.
When we do get to the filming stage, which we hope will be late Summer/Autumn 2013, we will have the British weather to contend with. Luckily the production does have interiors and we will therefore have 'wet weather cover' available if the weather delays exterior filming.
We will have production insurance, contingency plans, and an experienced production team.
In regards to backer fulfillment, we've set our fulfillment dates mostly as March 2014, with the hope that that will give us plenty of time for post-production. However, there is always a risk that we'll run behind. We are aiming to film in the Fall/Autumn but we have a lot of work to do to get to that stage. Hopefully some rewards will be available earlier, but the web series may not be ready for release until late spring 2014. We will keep all Kickstarter backers up to date with progress reports, and not go silent as soon as the campaign is over. Please remember to make us aware if your contact details change.
The project will be submitted to IMDb. Backers listed as getting an IMDb credit please be aware that although submitted these credits are subject to IMDb approval.
Filmmaking is, basically, problem solving, and our experience and determination will ensure that this project is completed to the best quality possible and the satisfaction of all involved.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
