About this project
Players have twelve turns to vote the cultist refugees out of the bunker. If even one cultist makes it in, humanity is doomed. On your turn, you must question a refugee to learn more about them, but each refugee has a personality of their own that will activate when questioned.
After questioning, you must cast a vote for a refugee you think should be exiled. When the clock hits 6:00 and 12:00, the refugee with the most votes will be kicked out.
A refugee can only take so much, though. After questioning, they're exhausted and can't bear to speak to anyone for an hour.
And that's your turn. Well, basically. Want to see a bit more? More of an auditory learner?
Check out our video going over the components and how to play the game:
Still not enough for you? Download the rules and Print'n'Play file from our website (towards the bottom of the page).
1 Rulesheet: Entertainment enough for all of you bookworms and rules lawyers.
8 Refugee Cards: The poor saps wanting in your bunker, each with their own volatile personality.
7 Allegiance Cards: 2 fanatic cards and 5 civilian cards. Which side will you be on? Just kidding, we know you're a fanatic.
12 Identity Cards: This is your special ability. Use it for the betterment of humanity. Or don't.
1 Doomsday Clock: The countdown to doomsday... it also tracks rounds.
12 Trait Cards: Different traits that you'll discover about the refugees through questioning. Are they a jerk? Vote them out!
12 Exile Markers: Use these to vote refugees out of the bunker. Play judge, jury, and executioner!
1 Box: To hold your game, of course!
Along with everything in the base game, backers at the DOOMSAYER tier or above will get:
2 Refugee Cards: The Anarchist and Socialite have arrived at the bunker. Will they survivor the end of the world? That's up to you!
1 Playmat: An impending asteroid impact isn't so bad when it's nice and organized on this beauty.
1 Identity Card: Assert your authority and shine the light of truth as the Reporter. Or lie your pants off. Either is fine.
If you want to know more about these promos, there's more details included in Update 5.
Back at the INFECTED pledge tier or add $10 to any pledge level to get The End is Nigh: Quarantine with your copy of the game!
What is The End is Nigh: Quarantine? It’s an add-on pack that includes another complete deck of cards themed around a zombie outbreak instead of an asteroid impact. Every refugee and trait card will feature alternate art, and all text will be modified to fit the theme. All stretch goal cards will also be included, even the tarot-sized refugee cards!
You may have what it takes to survive an asteroid impact... but what about the zombie apocalypse?
Want to add it on, but don't know how? Read the instructions here!
The End is Nigh is more classic deduction than social deduction, and is a fresh approach to the genre. The focus is on the non-playable refugees more than the individual players, so you don't need a masterful poker face, and there's no player elimination. Whether you're a civilian or a fanatic, you're trying to find out which of the refugees are cultists, and then either let them in or keep them out of the bunker.
That being said, there will be accusations of players being fanatics. Tension will rise and players will become suspicious. Be careful, though. It isn't guaranteed that there will be a fanatic among the players, there could be one, two, or none at all.
Here's what reviewers have to say about The End is Nigh.
Note: Reviewers received prototype copies which do not use some of the final terminology, art, or design. The gameplay is all the same.
“I think this is a really interesting game / gameplay mechanic, and it works pretty well. (...) I actually enjoy The End Is Nigh a lot!” - Eric, What's Eric Playing?
"I liked it a lot. It’s very different from a lot of those games like The Resistance, although it has much of the same DNA." "I think the traits are perfectly balanced, for both sides." - Jon and Will, Roll For Crit
"This is something that I really, really enjoy." - Brian, Cloak and Meeple
Mystic Ape Games isn't a huge company (yet). We mail each one of our games by hand from St. Louis. Basically, we aren't at the stage where we're able to ship a pallet of games to a warehouse in another country to fulfill games. If you're outside the United States, you will likely have to pay VAT fees. If you have any questions about shipping please shoot us a message!
Considering picking up a copy of Private Die with your pledge, but want to know more? Check out our Board Game Geek page, or the Kickstarter page. We think you'll like what you'll see. Here's what people have to say about it:
"Super compelling for such a tidy concept!" - BGG Reviewer
"Had a blast playing this with my partner the other night, this will definitely be hitting the table more!" - Kickstarter Backer
"Playing Private Die from @MysticApeGames Awesome dice game!" - Twitterer (Tweeter? Twitterite? Twittonian?)
Still have questions? Just ask!
You can add-on one or more of the above to your pledge! Don't know how? We've written up some instructions here.
Mystic Ape Games is run by three guys from St. Louis. We strive to make awesome games and provide you with a great Kickstarter experience. Here's what a couple of our previous backers had to say about us:
"Thanks for making my first experience with KickStarter such a great one."
"Creators listening to their backers like you do is what makes Kickstarter a great place!"
"I will say that because of your level of professionalism and willingness to communicate, I will gladly check out any of your future projects."
Want to know more about the people running the show? Look no further.
When he's not rating restaurants, movies, or board games Austin loves to ask hypothetical questions. He also is the lead game designer for Mystic Ape.
If asked what three items he would take on a desert island, Jacob would choose Super Smash Bros. Melee and two jars of peanut butter. He handles all the graphic design for Mystic Ape.
Musician. Coder. Little league hockey coach. Sam is all of these things and more. He handles all of the number crunching and business aspects of Mystic Ape.
The only thing Justin may like more than coffee is his pet cat, Robert. He did the illustrations for Mystic Ape's first game, Private Die, and has returned to illustrate The End is Nigh.
He will beat you at James Bond Scene It. Probably any version of Scene It, actually, or any trivia game for that matter. Andrew is the auteur behind our Kickstarter videos.
Risks and challenges
There are several risks and challenges when running a board game project, and we know several of those first-hand from our first Kickstarter campaign. We've learned from our mistakes and successes, as well as listened to advice from people with much more experience than us.
For these reasons we are continuing to take the "maker" approach. We are sourcing our components directly from the manufacturers, then assembling and shipping the games ourselves. This means we will personally oversee every aspect of the fulfillment process, from when you make your pledge to when you receive your game.
This "maker" approach also allows us to have a smaller funding goal, as you may notice. Your pledge will pay for your game, not overhead for shipping pallets of games overseas or warehousing fees. The cost of the game is going towards the quality components.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
