I am asking for your help to perform and record an incredible program of flute music. The preview concert will take place on September 14, 2019 at Carnegie Stage in Carnegie, PA, and the album will be recorded during the summer of 2019 and released in early 2020.

The project title, My Own Route, comes from a poem by Puerto Rican artist and activist Julia de Burgos titled Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta (I Was My Own Route). The poem starts:

I wanted to be like men wanted me to be: an attempt at life; a game of hide-and-seek with my being.

It ends with the ultimate realization, that we are nothing but ourselves, everything in ourselves, ourselves, ourselves, ourselves...

It is this idea that has guided the curation of this project. The repertoire is a combination of pieces I have commissioned that explore women and feminism and sex alongside pieces by incredible female composers from throughout history. I am proud to only employ female-identifying performing artists for this project. My ultimate goal is to amplify our voices, explore what it means to be female, and celebrate women in all of our nastiness.

The program includes brand new pieces by Daniel Felsenfeld, Sato Matsui, and Theo Chandler, the latter two of which come from my interdisciplinary Syrinx Project, a commissioning series that tells the stories of mythological women through contemporary feminist lenses. These pieces will share space with works by Anna Bon di Venezia (18th c. Italian composer, to be performed on Baroque flute), Amy Beach (20th c. American composer), and Katherine Hoover (21st c. American composer + flutist, to be performed on Hoover's own flute).

I was fortunate to receive a small grant to support my preview concert. Your support will help me to pay my artists, edit and master, and ultimately print CDs. I cannot express my gratitude enough for helping me to realize this project that has been a dream for years!

--

THANK YOU to my incredible collaborators: Sato Matsui, for writing Part IV of the Syrinx Project. Theo Chandler, for writing Part II. John Burnett, for writing Part III. Rachel Pospisil, for bringing her gorgeous stage directions to the entire Syrinx Project. Daniel Felsenfeld, for being willing to write a flute piece with only the direction that I'm angry. Bronwyn Hagerty, Kathleen Andrews McMasters, Erin David, Maija Anstine, and Nadine Sherman for recording on the album with me. Anna Bon, Amy Beach, and Katherine Hoover, for inspiring me every day. Rich Kawood, for agreeing to act as recording engineer, and for being my rock every day.  Jack, mum, and dad, for being the best role model and support system a young woman could have.
