General Information

This art project, Empowerment Through Art or The Art of Empowerment, is about lifting the spirit and instilling positivity through the facial imagery of burners/people from the regional burns; sharing their love, advice, and thoughts of how to make the people of this world richer in spirit, through their eyes. Taking these recorded images of faces and their responses to a small series of questions creating intimate videos, to share at burns around the world. Each regional burn will have a video of its own, featuring the burners of that particular regional, to then be viewed at other burns bringing to light the people/culture of that particular region, with the plan to bring this project to about 7 or 8 regional burns and Burning Man if possible. At the end of the project, the videos will be combined to show the love, happiness, and positivity of these willing participants scattered throughout the world that have broken these walls of fear, hate, and misery; with the goal of being displayed for public view to inspire, lift, and promote participation in similar projects/ideas of love and positivity. This project will take about a year to complete beginning with Blazing Swan 2019 (Australia) and ending in Kiwiburn 2020 (New Zealand) or Fuego Austral 2020 (Argentina).

There are two parts to this project, the filming and the presentation.

During the day, the filming process shall occur. There will be a booth where individuals will be asked for CONSENT to have their face and words recorded. The camcorder will be full framed on their face with a microphone placed over their heads. Asking these questions/requests (this may change slightly):

***QUESTIONS/REQUESTS WILL REMAIN SECRET TO GET AN AUTHENTIC ANSWER FROM ALL PARTICIPANTS***

No names, costumes, or anything of the like will be recorded. I will be the photographer; the photography is solely based on the eyes, mouth and facial expressions of the participants.

Part two of this project, the presentation, shall happen in the nighttime.

After filming the participant’s response, I shall retreat to edit these clips together to create videos, stitching the responses together. Creating two separate videos, one about ‘good advice’ and ‘good feels’.

There will be two booths or stalls set up with a monitor, chair, and headphones in each. Ambient music will be playing through small speaker(s) outside of the booths as well. One booth will be labeled “Belle Paroles” (Fine words/beautiful words) and the other “Paroles de Sagesse” (Words of wisdom or wise words), with each playing their respective video. When inside the booth, the person will sit down and watch the video intimately, staring into the recorded faces of strangers, listening to their words of wisdom/compliments via headphones. The proximity of the chair and monitor will be quite close, almost uncomfortably close, to break inside the personal barrier or at the least scratch the surface.

The outside of the booth will be slightly decorated with the encouragement for others to decorate the outside of the booth themselves. The interior will have soft lighting, comfortable chair/seat, with the walls white and bare to ensure focus on the image in front of the user. Have thought about drilling small holes in the booth to have small bits of light enter from the ambient lighting outside of the booth from foreign sources.

Risks and challenges

I've faced the challenges ahead of me all last year. Spent 7 months traveling the globe, on my own, attending 5 burning events: building camps, art, infrastructure, and spent about 2 months in the desert last year alone. I'm used to working 12-14 hours a day on a movie set in the freezing rain or tropical heat, my body is no stranger to hard work.

Life throws you curve balls, frequently. This trip will happen regardless of the art project.

Getting to each event is a challenge in itself, but something I've conquered over 10 times in the past several years. Locating materials and transportation are the biggest challenges. Having attended most of these events once or twice at the least has helped solidify connections in these remote areas, learning the logistics that are involved in the entire process.

Example, I've applied for this art piece to be at Blazing Swan in Australia (they've approved the project) and am in talks with the art people as to how to get there, what to bring, what type of weather happens in the area, where to procure materials, where to donate materials, so upon arrival most if not all questions are answered.

Things can happen, but knowledge is power and the community is there waiting to lend a hand when possible.
