My Gay Roommate is the story of two college roommates, one gay, one straight, and their journey into adulthood to become the homo-hetero power couple of the ages.
Since our first episode debuted in 2012, My Gay Roommate has become one of the most popular and talked about scripted web series in the world, with 5,614,830+ views and an audience of over 57,440 subscribers. #MGR has been featured in this year's Hollywood Issue of Vanity Fair, The New York Times, Huffington Post, LOGO TV’s NewNowNext, Queerty, OUT Magazine, and many more.
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
For the past year we have been developing the show with one of the top production companies in New York, Ish Entertainment.
We are so excited to finally launch the brand new full half-hour version of MGR! The new My Gay Roommate is a re-imagined and expanded half-hour version of the web series with new characters and storylines, and we can't wait to share it with you!
THE NEW SHOW
Nick and Max are roommates at Tuffet University, a classic liberal arts college complete with battalions of student groups, over-achieving freshmen, upperclassmen burnouts and the self-righteous indignation that characterizes Northeastern academia.
Nick Cohen is a newly out Jewish boy with OCD tendencies, while his roommate Max Finnegan is a broad-shouldered slob who may or may not have peaked in high school. Our unlikely duo takes on a freshman year full of firsts with a rascally band of suitemates: Rupert (an effeminate ladies man), his roommate Dom (the star linebacker) and Ernie (a techie Japanophile). They are joined by Sloane, Max’s no-bullshit upperclassman love interest, and her misanthropic roommate Mildred who become part of the crew.
The world of My Gay Roommate flips the social paradigm: being gay is not an issue, the football players are the underdogs while the a capella singers are the popular kids, the frat boys are the tame and rule-abiding students while the Women’s Rugby Team is the drug dealing muscle.
In this way, the show moves past the cliche gay-best-friend-side-kick and homophobic-straight-man relationship we see so often. My Gay Roommate presents a way of life that’s a little more 2016 – where a gay guy and straight guy are just friends. Best friends.
THE NEW CAST
We have an incredible all-star cast lined up for this new season of My Gay Roommate. We will reveal a fabulous new cast member for every milestone we hit on this campaign :) So let's get crackin'. Ready, set... GO!
WHAT THIS CAMPAIGN IS FOR:
Our budget is actually very low for a modern TV show. We’ve boiled everything down to the absolute essentials to make our filming super efficient without sacrificing quality. Ish is one of the only full service production houses left in New York, and will provide the equipment and post-production services, but that only scratches the surface of the costs of making a full pilot.
The money from this campaign will go directly towards running the production of our pilot. That means securing our multiple filming locations with permits and insurance, building our sets, paying for our amazing cast and crew, our incredible director, director of photography, line producer and top-notch editors and covering transportation and other costs.
And that's just the beginning - we got 10 juicy episodes planned out for season one. So fasten your seatbelts and let's get to #werq!
Risks and challenges
'My Gay Roommate: Reloaded' is our biggest undertaking to date. We are talking a full 30 minute episode, filmed in multiple locations, with a full sized professional cast and crew.
With a production this size there are always unknown risk factors: losing locations, actor schedule changes, equipment malfunctions, natural disasters, etc.
However, this time we are joined by one of the best production companies in New York: Ish Entertainment. Founded in 2008 by Michael Hirschorn, then EVP of Original Programming at VH1, Ish is a full-service production company that has grown into a powerhouse on both digital and linear fronts. Producing quality programming across genres and mediums, it is now one of the only truly independent television production companies in New York.
We have been writing, planning and creating the new and expanded world of My Gay Roommate with Michael and the team at Ish for the past year. With their proven track record, we are more than confident we will be able to deliver our fully-produced pilot episode and so much more :) :( ;)
