The My Brush Betty Story
Hi! My name is Sarah Webster, and I’m the inventor of My Brush Betty.
My Brush Betty's Original Makeup Brush Cleaning Kit is a high-efficiency washing machine for makeup brushes. It shake-cleans a handful of dirty makeup brushes fast — one minute for cleaning and one minute for rinsing.
Like many inventions, this one happened sort of by accident. But as the old saying goes: "Necessity is the mother of invention."
Back in 2005, I was a busy newspaper reporter for the Detroit Free Press, and sometimes I appeared on local and national TV for interviews. Nothing makes you more self-conscious than watching yourself on the air!
Like many women, I am prone to acne, so I needed to keep my collection of makeup brushes clean in order to prevent a breakout. But I was way too busy to wash them the recommended way. One. At. A. Time.
One hectic day, I simply dropped a handful of brushes into a sports drink bottle with warm water and a dab of dish soap, and I shook them clean. It was amazingly fast and effective.
This method had just one problem: The brushes smashed into the bottom of the bottle and the hair would spread about or splay. Eventually, I figured out how to stop that from happening – by gluing the bristles of a hairbrush to the interior bottom of the container! And I (selfishly) cleaned my brushes this way for nearly a decade before (finally) deciding to bring this idea to market.
I’ve had a ton of fun developing My Brush Betty for beauty lovers everywhere. I hope you’ll give her a try and let me know what you think!
This much I can promise: Shake-cleaning makeup brushes in My Brush Betty is the most fun you’ll ever have cleaning your makeup brushes! It also happens to be fast, easy and super-effective.
Premium Brush Care With My Brush Betty
All of the engineering work for My Brush Betty is complete.
Many thanks to Justin Aiello at Aiello Designs in Maine for taking my original cobbled-together contraption and sketches and transforming them into a real product, with engineering drawings and prototypes!
You can see the final pre-production prototype below here and in these other photographs.
My Brush Betty's Original Cleaning Kit has been extensively tested, and it works great!
My Brush Betty is now ready for manufacturing!
Or, more specifically, My Brush Betty is ready to be injection molded.
The material for the My Brush Betty container and twist-off bottom is polished acrylic, the lid is white ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and the cleaning disk and drying mat are pink TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) in a pretty pink color.
While the mat shown in the prototype photograph above is a raspberry color, the current color choice for the cleaning disk and drying mat is Pantone PMS 196, which is a lighter color pink. However, I may offer a second color choice or launch with a different color altogether if there is demand for 15,000 drying mats. (Stretch goal!) My other color choices for this product are Pantone PMS 190 or Pantone PMS 212. I'm open to suggestions from supporters!
At the moment, I plan to keep execution of this project in the United States. I have identified a manufacturer in California who can make the My Brush Betty cleaning kit at a globally competitive price. Labels are slated to be printed in Colorado. The Brush Bubbles and Reshaping Gel are to be produced in North Carolina and Oregon, respectively.
Show Me The Budget!
My goal for this project is $275,000, which is how much I estimate it will take to launch this product from this point on. Here is how funds are slated to be spent:
- Tooling for injection molds: $65,000
- Forecasted manufacturing and shipping costs: $182,500
- Kickstarter and Amazon fees: $27,500

Risks and challenges
While it is true that I've never done anything like this before, I've spent most of my career studying and writing about consumer products and businesses as a journalist.
I have extensively researched the cost to manufacture, ship and market My Brush Betty's premium line of brush care products. I also have the spreadsheets to prove it!
I've tried to eliminate some common start-up risks by making plans to manufacture the My Brush Betty Cleaning Kit and accessories in the United States, rather than overseas. I don't have the patience to wait for a slow boat from China, and I know customers don't either! Using a US-based manufacturer should eliminate shipping delays and, I believe, help to control quality with management ease.
Still, timing is always a challenge. After the tooling is completed for the injection molds, which should take approximately 3 months, the manufacturer says the product should be delivered in about 8-12 weeks. So, together, that's about six months from the close of the Kickstarter campaign until estimated delivery.
The other potential logistical challenge is making sure the various components of the kit come together at the right time for timely shipping. I have different US manufacturers for the cleaning kit, the Brush Bubbles and Reshaping Gel. While I do not anticipate any delays for the Bubbles or Gel products, any delay of a single component could delay delivery of the entire kit.
You'll also notice if you add up the Rewards limits, that I have capped the number of Cleaning Kits to be produced at 45,000. I've done that to ensure I can fulfill orders in a reasonable time frame and don't get too carried away by crazy demand (should I be so lucky).
Assembly is currently slated for Ferndale, Michigan, which is a super-cool suburb of Detroit.
I plan to ship products to consumers through the US Postal Service's Priority Mail service, which should take 3 days or less for final delivery to all consumers after shipping.
This much I do think it's important to note: The only way to guarantee you will get a My Brush Betty kit is to bid for one during this campaign. If I don't hit my goal, it is highly likely that My Brush Betty will NOT be coming to market.
If I do hit my goals here -- Hooray! -- I will be delivering kits on a first come, first serve basis. Because I have limited supply, if you don't get in on this first batch of Kickstarter inventory, you may have to wait until 2016. If we get that far.
