WHAT IS MY BEAUTIFUL BROKEN BRAIN?

‘Everything’s double as loud, double as colourful, double as beautiful. Double as painful, double as scary, double as crippling...’  Lotje

In the early hours of a Monday morning in November 2011, 34 year-old Lotje Sodderland was woken from her sleep with a pain in her head so excruciating that she lay on the floor waiting to die. She was experiencing a massive life threatening brain haemorrhage.

My Beautiful Broken Brain is the story of something that could happen to any of us at any time – a film born out of necessity to help a young woman make sense of having to start her life again when she was only half way through it.  Incredibly, thanks to medical intervention she survived, and now through Kickstarter, she presents us with a unique filmmaking opportunity.

LOTJE'S STORY

Two days after the brain haemorrhage, Lotje regained consciousness in a world that no longer made sense.  A world where words were incomprehensible, her sound and vision were distorted and half of her peripheral vision was filled with frightening hallucinations. Despite this, Lotje had the foresight to know she was experiencing something phenomenal.  Still unable to speak or even think properly she started using her iPhone to record every changing moment. Two weeks later she asked her family to contact filmmaker Sophie Robinson to see if she would help document her rapidly changing life.  Now she's at the point where she's sharing her journey with you.

Over the last two years Lotje has experienced the struggle of full-time inpatient rehabilitation and volunteered herself for an ambitious but untried experimental treatment on her brain. Just six months after the haemorrhage, she suffered a frightening and unexpected setback, turning her world upside down once more. Then a chance encounter with film director David Lynch helped to transform her life - leading to a new understanding of her brain and mind.

Combining the intensely personal footage shot by Lotje, with Sophie's observational narrative, My Beautiful Broken Brain has resulted in a film which will help share Lotje's life-affirming insight with the rest of us.

WHY KICKSTARTER?

Lotje's story is hers and should be told her way, staying faithful to her experience and remaining creatively independent right up to completion.  Everyone involved with the making of My Beautiful Broken Brain has been gathered together by Lotje – a group of people she trusts to help bring her film to life.  Kickstarter is her way of inviting you to help finish her story – whether that's directly backing it or by spreading the word to your friends, family or workmates.

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES

Your backing is the final push to elevate My Beautiful Broken Brain from a fascinating documentary to a much more filmic and accurate portrayal of Lotje's world worthy of cinematic release. The money is going towards:

·Editing and post-production – with over 150 hours of iPhone footage this is a mammoth task!

·Visuals including accurate graphic representations of Lotje's vision, hallucinations and trauma as described by her.

·Music and sound design by BAFTA winning Nick Ryan who, like Lotje, also hears distorted sound and can empathetically soundtrack her story.

OUR HOPES FOR MY BEAUTIFUL BROKEN BRAIN

In April this year, US President Barack Obama announced a new research initiative focusing on the human brain:

As humans we can identify galaxies light years away, but we still haven’t unlocked the mysteries of the three pounds of matter that sits within our ears...so there’s this enormous mystery waiting to be unlocked.

This film couldn't be more timely – just at the point in history where we are finally uncovering the mysteries of the brain, along comes Lotje’s story. We want to raise funds to finish and showcase My Beautiful Broken Brain on the festival circuit from Summer 2014.  If we're lucky enough to go beyond our target funding, the money will go towards strengthening our global outreach and promoting Lotje's incredible story.

WHAT TO DO NOW

Of course, we'd love you to pledge: to do this you simply check out the great rewards we have on offer in the green panels on the right of the page, select the one you want and follow the link from there. But there are other ways you can support us too. Lotje has a fantastic story to tell and we hope that the more people who hear about it, the closer we will get to completing her film so please share our Kickstarter project amongst your friends and family, join us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. And remember you can still help & donate once the Kickstarter campaign is finished. Thanks so much for coming along for this stage of Lotje's journey.

Risks and challenges

Over the last 2 years making this film has taught us many things – we’ve listened, we’ve learnt and we’ve taken on board a lot of advice. These are just a few of the lessons:

FINISHING THE FILM – half the battle is done. Through the dedication and kindness of others we have the footage in the can. Now we just need your help to cross the finish line.

SPREADING THE WORD – with our new Kickstarter team behind us we can give Lotje a voice. Not just to raise money but to get people talking. And when people talk, people help.

IMPACT – the knock-on effect of talking to people is that you find out just how many people are affected by brain damage, whether personally or vicariously. Lotje’s story impacts on us all and we believe it will change the way we look not only at ourselves, but at our friends and families and even the guy standing next to you in the bus queue.

We've already faced challenges, we've already faced risks and each one has been overcome thanks to the inspiration Lotje's story instills in everyone involved and everyone we've met. We promised never to give up until we get this film made and shared with all of you - that's not going to change.
