About this project
Musk Skateguitars is a professional guitar made entirely from skateboards.
Because of its weight, size and resistant materials is perfect for carrying it everywhere. Is a unique instrument that you will not find anywhere else. Because of the maple wood and the design, the MUSK Skateguitars it’s not only a high quality instrument, it’s like a collectible piece.
Guitars inspired by passions
MUSK Skateguitars is the result of our two passions: MUsic & SKateboarding. These two combined turned out to be a fascinating product and project!
Why do we use skateboards? Simply because our love for skateboarding and their durability… like fine wine they also look better with age. Our guitars body and neck are made entirely with skateboards having as a result a cool longer lasting guitar.
The project started in Argentina when Gianfranco De Gennaro, professional skateboarder and Ezequiel Galasso, luthier, started designing handmade guitars using pre-owned skateboards. At first, guitars were made one by one but then we realized that we could not keep up with the existing demand. So we started thinking about how to produce a guitar that could be developed in a shorter period of time without loosing any of its quality. As a result, we created two different models that are more accessible than the first guitars and that could be made on a more effective way.
We have created two models of MUSK skateguitars specially designed to optimize the assembly time. That allows the skateguitars we produce to be more affordable.
Since we started experimenting with skateboards to build guitars we discovered many peculiarities in terms of their function and sound. Due to its shape and method of construction by layers of maple we obtained a structurally very resistant instrument with an excellent attack and brightness, which makes it ideal for all kinds of configurations. For this first edition we decided to use humbucker microphones equipped with Alnico V in the Bridge and Alnico II in the Neck, to obtain that characteristic sound that distinguishes MUSK skateguitars.
Design process and production plan
For more than a year we have been working on this affordable models, respecting the same finishing and sound quality of our first hand made MUSK skateguitars. Today we have every element in place to begin production and we even have a smooth fulfillment process implemented, to send your MUSK skateguitars in a couple of months. If we reach our funding goal, we will start production in July, as soon as we get the funds. As you may have noticed, we set the delivery date on October 2017. This is a conservative estimate, but if things goes well we hope to deliver prior to that.
Although we discovered the way to produce this models in a more efficient way we don’t have the necessary funds to achieve our objective. It has been a very long process where we tried different materials and shapes, we made different prototypes and consulted several professionals until we could reach a result that we were happy with. But all that effort is still not enough, we can’t afford their production. We really want this project to see the light and that's why we are asking for your support. If you like the project or you would like to have a MUSK in your hands, please help us out!
Mike Mccready. Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam was coming to Argentina and we thought that would be great if we gave Mike Mccready one of our guitars. In our dreams it was an amazing idea but making it a reality was quite difficult. We struggled to find the way to give him the present but we finally reached the right person. So we sent Mike Mccready our guitar but we never imagined what would happen next. He suddenly took our guitar in the last song of the concert in Argentina and started covering The Ramones' "I believe in miracles" with it! It was mind blowing to witness one of the most famous musicians in the world using a MUSK Skateguitar.
Paul Rodriguez was on a demo tour in Argentina, after the demo, MUSK TEAM surprised him with a video which he thought was some demo footage… but suddenly the video shows how one of his pro model boards was chopped and surprisingly turned into a guitar. Then the actual guitar was gifted to him by the team and he his reaction was priceless.
“It is the most amazing gift I’ve received. I can’t wait to get home, plug it in an amplifyer and play it out loud” - Paul Rodriguez (Professional Skateboarder)
Musk Skateguitar was featured in “Green Design Vol. 2 book”, Braun Editions (Germany). 2011
Risks and challenges
As with every project that involves manufacturing, there are always unexpected challenges to overcome: delays, last-minute design tweaks to better serve production, etc.
But we are confident that we will overcome them; we have an experienced factory and we work with well known import and export companies to deliver your MUSK skateguitars safe and on time.
