Update: I LOVE how much support there is for this! Let's make it AMAZING and take it to £10K!
After 4 wonderful, fulfilling, and challenging years as a folk artist, this project has come along to take me to the next level. It's the culmination of ALL our hard work, our good luck, and the good will of all the people who've brought me to this:
I have an amazing opportunity to record Baez & Dylan's music at Abbey Road, and I need your help to make it happen!
I have 2 goals:
AT £20,000 - WE DO IT RIGHT! And fund the PR for this like a major label would. TV placements, music videos (x3), serial advertising campaigns on radio, and in media, a full on TOUR with the band, and we are much more likely to be able to cross the pond. Just saying.
AT £10,000 - I SHALL RELEASE VINYL! And boost the PR, which means: more and better printed press, radio play, a Vinyl edition, professional press photo's, a music video, sharing it with (literally) millions of people digitally, and hiring PR agencies to get it OUT there!
How this all came about
After many requests (daily, in fact) to record an album of Baez/ Dylan's music from fans, I spent some time thinking about the best way to do this.
How else can such important and historic music be recorded to make the biggest impact possible, and to do enough justice to those extraordinary and influential songs?
But how was that going to be possible? It's very expensive for starters!!
WELL! I did the seemingly impossible, and managed to find an actual sponsor, who believed in me SO MUCH that they were willing to pay for me to record at Abbey Road. (THE) ABBEY ROAD!!!
Can you believe it?
I am still reeling. But it's really happening now.
So what's the money for?
This is the catch. The sponsor will pay for the recording, IF I can source the funding to release the album. This includes costs for pressing the CD's, making merchandise, touring, and getting adequate media by going through official PR channels for radio play and printed reviews, and that's what I'm raising money for on here!
All the support I have arranged, is contingent on being able to source part of the funding through Kickstarter. Show-a-little-faith type thing!
So without being able to raise money on here, the sponsors will walk away, I won't be able to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity, and the album will not get to delight anybody!
Now, for those of you that don't know me already, I'm a folk artist on the UK scene, and have been for the last four years. I've managed to scramble my way up from nothing, largely through crowdfunding, hard work, and some lucky opportunities - and in the past, each Kickstarter campaign has been OVERWHELMINGLY successful, the last two reaching their goal well within a day of launching, so let's keep it going shall we?!
Stakes are higher this time!
So, to get on board with the biggest opportunity I've ever had, and to help me make an AWESOME (and historic!) record, pick a reward from the side, and let's make it happen!
Now for more about my backstory, and relationship to the music of Baez & Dylan...
People love my folk covers! If you haven't seen my Dylan video on facebook yet, I have a treat for you: https://www.facebook.com/saskiagmsings/videos/836522109873746
I only heard about Joan Baez because SO many people said I sounded like her. So I googled her, and got struck with pangs of jealousy at her perfect tone, beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics. I just had to cover some of her songs! So I started putting her songs in my set lists.
Little by little I found my home in the folk scene, as I got more and more requests to follow in this direction.
Also...A fan went to see Baez on the farewell tour and gave Joan some flowers at the end....with one of my CD's inside! Fingers crossed she saw it!
And she inspired me to sing - alone. I saw a video of her simply by herself, needing nothing - no fancy effects, complicated backing tracks, or even a band. She was beautiful all on her own, and made me feel like I could do that too someday.
And so I dug around in the archives of youtube and spotify and made her voice my homebase. Through her I really came to discover Dylan, and that's why I want to make a combination album, honouring both of them.
They are both some of the most influential singer/songwriters, and it will be a great privilege to cover their work with new life, new interpretations, and to do those wonderful songs justice, in both the recording at Abbey Road, and releasing of this project!
So lastly, I will leave you with a link to my website which has my current works up, and a few videos of Baez/Dylan covers I've done in the past.
Thanking you for taking the time to read this, to connect to my story, and to help me make a STELLAR record!
Risks and challenges
Risks? Power outage while we are in the studio? Spilling coffee on my guitar? Forgetting how to sleep because of excitement? I've got it all covered.
1) Which Baez/Dylan songs will you record?
Go VOTE* here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/452282048316315/permalink/1020077051536809/
*votes will be a rough guide, not a 100% guarantee, but I want to hear your thoughts!
2) Does the new endorsement conflict with the old one?
No, both Agnew Instruments and JWC Guitars are aware of one another, and are non exclusive. I feel this industry thrives on collaboration not competition, and I will continue to perform with both phenomenal instruments.
3) When are you recording?
End of May.
4) When are you releasing this album?
Kickstarter backers will get an early copy, but it's not scheduled for public release till September, which is a long time away, so pre-order while you can!
5) Why Baez and Dylan and not Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy?
Give it time!
6) Are you pressing Vinyl?
Once we reach the £10,000 mark I'll release a Vinyl reward option - before that level it wont be viable. But lets hope!
