Risks and challenges
I chose to begin my KickStarter adventure with Fishy Tactics (my 4th game) primarily because it is a small game which needs only a relatively low amount of funding to become a reality. As I'll be sourcing and producing the game myself, extra costs are kept to a minimum.
For those new to KickStarter, KickStarter is a crowd-funding platform that enables start ups (like me) to raise money to see a product come to market.
If the goal is not met by the deadline, no funds are collected. Only if the target funding is met (or exceeded) will any funds be taken from your account, and funds will only be transfered after the campaign has finished.
There are several ways in which I have tried to minimise risk for this campaign:
GAMEPLAY & MATERIALS:
Having playtested Fishy Tactics thoroughly with a variety of ages and skill levels - you can rest assured that you'll be receiving a finished game. Additionally, in choosing to design and source the game myself - I've been able to asses the actual components that will be used in the final product for quality control.
With the parts being primarily sourced within Europe, and having ordered samples of the different components already, I believe Christmas to be a realistic and manageable delivery estimate (including some wiggle room). It's important to me that Fishy Tactics is with you in time for Christmas stockings, but delivery dates do have the potential to suffer from delays for a variety of reasons beyond my control (weather, strikes, customs...), but I will be open and honest with regular updates throughout the whole process.
If the campaign is so successful that a much larger order needs to be placed, then this could potentially cause delays with the production and subsequently the delivery to you. I am in conversation with the manufacturers to try to mitigate this risk, and again, will be open and honest with regular updates throughout the whole process.
One potential option would be to split the order and do the shipping in batches. If this is needed I would intend to prioritise pledges in order of when pledged.
It's also worth noting that international customers may encounter unexpected import taxes and/or delays with customs. Due to Fishy Tactic's small size, weight and cost, hopefully these should be none/minimal; however, there is no guarantee. Please bear this in mind when pledging from outside of the UK, as I will not be able to cover these costs.
