Monument Lab: Monuments By The People, For The People

$54,344

What do the monuments across our cities tell us about the histories we collectively choose to remember in our public spaces? What do YOU think needs representation? What would your monument look like?

In the fall of 2017, Mural Arts Philadelphia will work with curators Paul Farber and Ken Lum, along with 21 emerging and world-renowned artists, to bring a series of temporary public artworks to Philadelphia for Monument Lab, a participatory, citywide project that will ask: What is your vision for a monument that represents Philadelphia?

Monument Lab will use art to activate public space, to offer justice to underrepresented voices, and to unearth a deeper and more inclusive understanding of Philadelphia’s history, identity, and values.

While this exploration is rooted in the birthplace of American democracy, we intend for it to have international reach and impact. We believe Monument Lab is a replicable model that cities and towns around the world can use to better represent their own complex histories. And we're inviting everyone to follow the project and engage with it (and with us!) on social media.

**This project has been selected for inclusion on Art Basel’s curated page on Kickstarter.**

About the Monuments

Monument Lab will include a series of 21 temporary installations by 21 local and international artists at 10 pop-up hubs in parks across Philadelphia. The artists will respond to a guiding, central question—What is an appropriate monument for the current city of Philadelphia? They will create projects that rethink the very form and function of a monument and explore the need for better representation in the histories we choose to cement into our public spaces.

For example: Tyree Guyton, renowned Detroit artist and founder of the Heidelberg Project, will respond to pressing issues around trauma, experienced in Philadelphia and throughout the nation, with a project in the Kensington neighborhood that explores the relationship between time, recovery, resilience, and healing. Sharon Hayes, who has long explored social movements and activism in her work, will consider the absence of historic women represented in Philadelphia monuments. Mel Chin, a conceptual visual artist who works in a variety of art media to calculate meaning in modern life, will celebrate ordinary citizens and residents with a uniquely participatory monument at City Hall Courtyard.

Why Monument Lab?

With Monument Lab, we aim to jumpstart a conversation about Philadelphia's multiple histories and identities; to gather insight into movements and moments that continue to shape the City and our experience of it; to advance recognition of Philadelphia as a cultural innovator and global city; and to inspire a dialogue around Philadelphians' shared hopes and collective vision for the future.

After a decidedly polarizing election in a quickly shifting world, vulnerable communities face fear and uncertainty. It's in this moment that we are more invigorated and inspired than ever by our mission to ignite change; to empower artists to be change agents; to stimulate dialogue around critical issues and build bridges of connection and understanding; and, through beautiful collaborative art, to provide people with the inspiration and tools to seize their future.

About Mural Arts Philadelphia

Mural Arts Philadelphia is the nation’s largest public art program, dedicated to the belief that art ignites change. For 30 years, we have united artists and communities through a collaborative process, rooted in the traditions of mural-making, to create art that transforms public spaces and individual lives. Mural Arts engages communities in 50–100 public art projects each year. Mural Arts will co-produce Monument Lab with lead curators Paul Farber and Ken Lum.

About the Central Exhibition and Public Programs

At all 10 Monument Lab installation sites, there will be pop-up hubs and community gathering spaces where we'll be collecting visitors' ideas. These ideas will be scanned and shared online and at a central exhibition space at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Each visitor's idea will also be used to create a "Report to the City," presented during a symposium planned for 2018.

Between September and November 2017, Monument Lab will also feature a series of tours of the sites and projects, in addition to public programs, interactive experiences, and celebrations with artists, community leaders, urbanists, historians, and more. It's all designed to engage participants in a meaningful dialogue around history, memory, and our collective future exploring narratives of racial justice, gender equality, queer histories, and socio-economic struggle.

What We’ve Done So Far

Monument Lab will build on a successful research and development phase undertaken in spring 2015. Conceptualized and led by the same curatorial team, the initial phase included a large installation in the courtyard at City Hall, envisioned by the late artist and University of Pennsylvania professor Terry Adkins. More than 35,000 people who traveled through or visited City Hall got to see and interact with the sculpture and thousands more participated in a series of public conversations between local artists, historians, leaders, and thinkers.

What Your Contribution Will Support

When you become an investor in Monument Lab you get a firsthand experience of the project AND you ensure that we can staff our hubs for "open hours," as well as allow us to offer lots of engaging public programs for free or low-cost to the public.

Major support for Monument Lab projects staged in Philadelphia’s five squares has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. An expanded artist roster and projects at five neighborhood sites have been made possible by a significant grant from the William Penn Foundation. Our lead corporate sponsor is Bank of America. Additional support has been provided by the Hummingbird Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Nick & Dee Adams Charitable Fund, Parkway Corporation, Tiffany Tavarez, Tuttleman Family Foundation, and Joe & Renee Zuritsky.

Risks and challenges

Our most significant challenges range from permitting, to creating and installing artwork outdoors that can weather several weeks of varying climate, to building a series of events and "labs" that engage the public and encourage ongoing community participation. We feel prepared to address these risks, thanks to a successful pilot phase and strong planning for every contingency.

    Monument Lab Catalogue (Signed)

You’ll also receive two tickets to "Promument," which as its name suggests, is Monument Lab’s prom—a celebratory evening bringing together Monument Lab artists, curators, supporters, and participants in cheer and cheers!
