A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
About this project
The perfect solution for the parent who does it all in style!
Whether you are a SAHM, WAHM, or a 9-to-5er, life is SO BUSY and it's not always easy to stay organized on the go. We lug around way too many bags creating a bulky, inefficient mess. I was that mom, "the bag lady" with many bags that would fall off my shoulders, with things in my arms and hands and two kids to herd around. I had so many bags for different things and could not keep track of what I was carrying and when.
That's when I decided I had enough! My bags certainly did not play well together and nothing out there did! So, I set out to design the Division of Labor Dual Tote.
-Division of Labor is pat pending, all copyrights and trademarks reserved
I had spent around $1000 on so many different diaper bags, but at the end of the day, once I dropped my diaper bag with daycare, what was I to do with all of my stuff that I carried in there on weekends and evenings? I would often forget my wallet in my diaper bag, lose my keys buried under diapers, sign checks with crayons, and use kleenex as baby wipes. It was madness until I designed the perfect solution: two highly organized and dedicated bags - one for baby's effects (Care Tote) and one for you (Command Tote).
The individual totes can be ordered separately but they are so awesome when combined. They share the same design style and won't have you looking like a bag lady. They come with many attachment points so that you can tether other bags or items onto them if you need to. No more bags sliding off your shoulders! The bags are also great if you're a gym warrior during your lunch hour AND especially useful for twin moms who have a lot of gear to carry around for their babes and themselves.
Watch this time lapse to see all the stuff that fits into this system!
Believe me, as a busy mom, I need all that stuff! And this system keeps it so organized! This system has so many critical features, it will keep you on top of your parenting game. #parentinggamesostrong
Your bags are packed, you're ready to go, head out with the Dual Tote clipped together or simply velcro their straps together and let them naturally magnet together at the bottom. Dropping baby off? All he needs is in the Care Tote. Now you take the Command Tote out and about with all you need to get through the day!
This is the bag dedicated to your baby or your kids. Stylish for both moms and dads and full of ingenious features to make your life easier.
Wide, deep pockets inside and out for quick easy access to baby's items, a wipes pocket on the front with zip opening for instant access
Two separated water resistant pockets for clean/dirty/wet clothes or to keep snacks cold
An internal (and removable) divider to prevent tall items from falling flat to the bottom of the bag
A removable changing pad with a pocket for diapers and wipes which also converts into a tablet protector after diaper days are done
The Command Tote is all that you need to get to work and the gym in style and comfortably.
Padded 15 in laptop pocket
a wet/insulated compartment for clothes or to carry a food container
an internal sunglass pocket
an external bottle pocket with a bungee that you can hang precarious things on that you don't want to get wet or break (glasses, towel, underwear, etc.
A front pocket that accommodates a pair of shoes. It also comes with a pair of shoe covers to protect your bag and other items from dirt and detachable yoga straps that you can use to attach your yoga mat to your bag
Regardless of which bag you take home, both have features that you will fall in love with even if you're not a parent. Here is our list of their shared features starting with what we think are the best features:
Insulated and wipe-clean interior bottle pocket for keeping drinks, shakes, or breastmilk bottles cold
Insulated and wipe clean pocket for moist/wet/or dirty items OR for carrying a snack or meal
Zippered key pocket with key ring to clip your keys to and protect. Never search for your keys again! #micdrop
Reminder tabs in pockets - pull them out as a reminder that something needs to be thrown in the laundry, replenished, or put in the fridge or freezer!
Labeled pockets - a velcro label you can remove and label with a kids marker or pen and then wash out if you want to change the label #ocdmuch
Easy extend stroller strap to hang on stroller - one strap, no velcro-ing or clipping or dangling weird loops on your bag
Easy access external cell phone pocket
External webbing strip to allow connecting of bags, attachment of accessories such as baby toys, yoga strap for mat, baby carrier, hats, and much more
Comes with 2 stainless steel chrome plated S clips to connect bags together or as all-purpose clips to hold various items to the bag
Fits into a standard gym locker (together or separate)
Interior card pockets for cards you don't need to carry in your wallet (insurance, rewards cards, punch cards)
Water resistant fashion nylon exterior, fashionable and easy pull zipper tabs
Fits 15 in laptop (Command) or any size tablet (Care), see through mesh pockets and light colored interior to easily see what is inside
Adjustable shoulder strap with comfort pad that can connect the bags together
"To each his own" - so many ways you can connect and carry them together, I'll bet you might invent your own ways to keep these two bags in sync!
Fits on double wide strollers (twin moms!)
These are not just two ginormous bags clipped together. They complement eachother in shape and in style. #yinandyang
What's more is that the modularity of these bags will allow future bags that are (already!) designed to be added that can connect in the same way! Follow on IG, FB, Pinterest, and of course Kickstarter to stay up to date with new additions and projects!
Throughout the past year, many moms have been testing out the bags and giving their feedback on the design. Here are some highlights:
"Designed with me in mind" - Amy K.
The Division of Labor bag is designed with mom in mind. With multiple pockets including zipper details, it keeps your items organized and easily accessible. One of my favorite features of this bag are the red tabs that you can pull out when you have a dirty diaper, messy outfit or sweaty gym clothes that need taken out at home. These little reminders flag your messy items before they are forgotten in your bag. The exterior of the bag sports a sleek, modern style and the interior fabric is easily wiped clean. The functionality of the Division of Labor bag which combines two bags in one is perfect for the active mom (or dad). Diaper bag for baby and gym bag for mom that can be carried together or separately. I absolutely love the versatility of this bag and its ability to keep a busy mom organized! "LOVE IT!" - Raina E.
This is a high quality bag and it allows me to go to work in style. I'm a blogger and dance teacher and was so excited about this bag and here I am a few months out after having Landon. Was so stoked to get into the gym and I brought him with the Care bag to the gym daycare - everything they needed was in there. And then I brought the Command Tote with me - got a blog post in and then hit a HIIT class! All my shower stuff, hydration was carried in this bag! Love the reminder tabs and labels! I'm a little OCD and I love labeling things!
"Mama Must Have!" - Lindsey C.
This system was perfect for an on-the-go mama of twins. Being able to separate the Command Tote from the Care Tote made going to the gym, dropping the girls off at day care or having a daddy day a breeze without having to transfer keys or forgetting my wallet! These gems had enough pockets for storage and was well thought out for everything a mama could want or ask for in a diaper bag! When I needed to pack for a full day, there was enough room and the bags were easily carried together, however when I needed a quick run, I could carry just the Care Tote and still have everything I needed in a compact bag. These are an essential for any busy mama... and huge bonus, my husband even volunteered to carry it!! My only complaint is that I wish I had these a year ago!! Ooh - also forgot to say that it is a great bag set for a mom/dad bag. I used the Command Tote and hubs carried the Care Tote. He loved that it was neutral enough and yet fashionable to carry and he carried a few of his items in it along with the girls' things. They are both so functional and versatile!
"NOT A MOM BUT STILL LOVE IT!" - Alexis C.
I am a personal trainer and I live in gym clothes but I also have to keep my professional aspect of my life going. This bag allows me to carry my Macbook Air, my gym clothes and everything to freshen up throughout the day in one small package! It even has a pocket for my wet swimsuit! The best thing is it fits in my gym locker, I don't have to set my bag vertical like some of my other bags. I also love the shoe covers - saves me on those days when I have an outdoor session and it's muddy! This bag has so many well-thought out features and I hope you all back this bag because I want to get one for all of my clients! I'm backing it, are you?!
As a seasoned designer and developer, I have many years of experience designing and producing bags and other items. I have a great relationship with a factory who also has done two or more Kickstarter projects in the past. They are so excited for this project and they have been patiently working with me for almost a year on the Division of Labor Dual Tote. All hardware that has been designed for this project has already had molds created and the factory is simply waiting for an order to be placed in order to get the product to you. Since this is not my first experience working with a factory and shipping and fulfilling, I expect the entire process to be quite smooth. I also have an overseas quality control specialist who manages the production to ensure bags are built up to spec.
On all of my shipping invoices is the quote: "It takes a village to launch a brand" - me
I started MULTIWEAR® about a year ago and based the business on the sale of apparel for nursing moms (www.cardimom.com) though I have branched out into yoga and travel markets. My customer base is growing but still small and this is a fledgling company. I've been designing and tweaking totes, purses, baby carriers, and backpacks and would love for my business to branch out into the world of bags. I need your help to support this endeavor because I want to practice lean manufacturing and my operations are currently in office. This is a big step and I want Kickstarter backers to be with me on this journey. All of my designs are intended to work together and be carried together ergonomically. It will be such a fun experience taking this from where we are today to see where we can be after this Kickstarter. If this is successful you will see more to come!

Risks and challenges
Underpromise and overdeliver! I initially was going to promise Christmas delivery but because the campaign ending early November, funds being collected for 2 weeks, it would require everything to go perfectly smoothly to get Christmas delivery. I would rather not promise it and strive for it. If it is looking that way, I will certainly let you know! I do think it is very feasible that these bags would be in your hands in early/mid January.
I have a set of eyes and ears available at the factory to oversee production and inspect the quality of the products and I have highlighted all areas of concern, having been a bag designer for years and knowing the common areas of problems with bags, my goal is to prevent these issues by assuming they will happen and doing all I can to prevent them from happening. With my many years of experience in this field, the risk for this project is very low. The manufacturer is ready to start this project once they receive our order. Let's get this bag made!
A zippered wallet with card slots, cash slots, coin purse, adjustable handle, and a stowed grocery tote in the back pocket. You can deploy the tote and the wallet hangs out inside the tote, effectively turning your wallet into a tote bag. Great for farmers markets, daily trips to the grocery store or drug store, and for air travel as you always have an extra carryon when you get through security. A nice addition to your Division of Labor system.
