About

We are engaged in the effort to bring Abdullah Qodiriy's iconic novel O'tkan Kunlar to life through contemporary media. After fifteen years of rendering a definitive translation  from Uzbek of the original version published in 1926, we offer not just a spectacular piece of Uzbek literature, but a window in Central Asian culture, history and religion. The text boasts 400 explanatory notes putting this culturally rich document into context for western readerships.

In keeping with the spirit of Abdullah Qodiriy, we hope to render his work into modern formats, such as an ebook, that even the Jadid Movement would have approved. Money raised will also cover layout and design, completion of artwork, and initial printing costs for soft and hardbound copies. Surplus funds will go towards advertising of Abdullah aka's 125th birthday with potential adverts placed on the New York, DC and London metros as well as widely regarded journals and newspapers. This effort should disseminate an Uzbek cultural artifact to western, main-stream audiences and provide an understanding of a little known part of the world.

Over this past summer I traveled to Uzbekistan to meet with the Qodiriy family to collect audio, video and archival files for the ebook that will put into context the complex cultural milieu of Qodiriy's 19th and 20th century Central Asia. Please enjoy our video as it represents a hallmark in collaboration between US and Uzbek colleagues-- as well as an appearance by a descendant of Abdullah Qodiriy.

Risks and challenges

The progress of Muloqot Cultural Engagement Program and the publication of O'tkan Kunlar can be monitored on the recently published blog site, www.theuzbekmodernist.com and the FaceBook page Muloqot Cultural Engagement Program. Viewers will see that the primary director of this project, Mark Reese, is the translator of the actual novel and has 24 years Central Asia experience. He will be the primary point-of-contact throughout the life of this program and keep the donor apprised of any changes.

As Uzbekistan experiences an efflorescence of cultural efforts, there are still challenges to the program. Mr. Reese humbly suggests that crowd-sourcing of a cultural icon in Uzbekistan has never been attempted before and could meet with unforeseen challenges.

With any new venture comes challenges, but we believe that your participation will make westerners aware of Abdulla Qodiriy's place in world literature. You could own the narrative on how Uzbeks are depicted on the world stage! Let's celebrate his 125th Birthday together!
