About This Project
The object of this kickstarter is to launch TerraToy Studio with a complete line of new products. I have lots of designs for new ceramic toys, but require the time and resources to create the molds to make them. Each funding goal that that we achieve will provide me more time to create the equipment I need to produce these figures. As a result backers will get a greater variety of toys to choose from.
Toy Sets and Funding Goals
One of my favorite aspects of crowd funding is funding goals. I enjoy the idea of being rewarded for getting more people involved in the project. Below you will find a list of this campaign's funding goals. The money raised by each goal will provide me the time and resources to create another new set of TerraNauts. The more sets that are unlocked, the greater variety of toys available to backers of this project - and future customers.
Reward Levels: “Blind Box” vs “Backer’s Choice”
Rewards for this campaign break down into two types: ‘Blind Box’ and ‘Backers Choice.’
‘Blind Box’ rewards cost less, but you will receive a random TerraNaut. If you chip in a bit more for the ‘Backer’s Choice,’ you’ll have the option of choosing your TerraNaut. Your options will be based on the sets that have been unlocked by the Funding Goals.
The $35 and $45 reward levels come with one TerraNaut, however you can add a second TerraNaut by simply pledging $35/$45 more respectively (see Add-Ons below).
If you decide that you want more than 2 TerraNauts, it’s time to upgrade to the “Triple” level. If you choose either of these levels, your third TerraNaut will cost $5 less. Backers at the “Triple” levels can add extra TerraNauts for $30/$40 respectively.
Some reward groups are limited. If they are full, you are not shut out. When a reward group fills, I will add another with the same rewards, but a slightly later delivery date. This mechanism builds in extra time in case this project over-funds.
How this started...
My passion is ceramic sculpture. Last year, I took a leap of faith and created a Kickstarter project for ceramic toys called TerraNauts. I set out to spend a summer making 100 ceramic figures. What happened next was amazing. My project was 600% funded. I ended up leaving my day job and spending the better part of eight months creating more than 1,800 clay sculptures. It was the single most fantastic project of my life.
That Kickstarter put me on the path to a dream I’m calling "TerraToy Studio." My long-term goal is to run a ceramic toy shop that works with artists around the world to produce clay art toys based on their designs. This Kickstarter is the next step in making that dream a reality. Producing these molds will give me the resources to create more toys, and the experience to work with others to make their designs a reality.
Upgrading Toy Production
In the past, my ceramic toys were created as traditional sculptures formed from solid clay. They required three to five weeks to dry and were expensive to ship. These newly designed toys will still be completely made by hand but will take advantage of slip casting techniques that are much better for designer art toys.
The core forms of the figures will be produced with handmade molds instead of by rolling and pressing the clay. The details of each figure will be hand sculpted in the same way as before. The result will be hollow, durable figures that dry in three days, ship for less and maintain their distinctive handmade qualities. Cutting down the production time and cost of shipping will allow me to continue to provide unique toys at affordable prices.
I’m an artist working in ceramics making figurative sculpture.
A lot of my art encourages and even requires (often to the dismay of galleries) the audience to touch and interact with it. I believe art isn’t about objects. Art is what happens between the audience and the pieces that I make, whether a huge sculpture or a small toy. If you'd like to learn more about me as an artist, here are a few links to online interviews and features.
Like a lot of you, I’m a fan of Kickstarter. I’ve backed a handfull of projects and was really happy with the outcomes. Now, I’m launching my own campaign and hoping you'll help me make my new series a reality.
During the campaign, I'll be actively checking my messages and the comments section. If there's a backer level you'd like to see offered, feel free to contact me and suggest it.
I am hoping that you'll help me make TerraToy’s Studio a reality. There is really nothing else like it in existence today.
Risks and challenges
I've already faced a 600% over-funded project and succeeded. Based on that experience I’ve designed this project to run as smoothly as possible. There is always a chance of unforeseen circumstances, but I pride myself on frequent communication and making sure that every single backer comes out of the experience having enjoyed it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
