Greetings, MST3K Revival League!

Yeah, it's Joel again, back with another quick update.

Yesterday, I shared the big news that the next season of Mystery Science Theater will premiere on Netflix on Turkey Day, which also happens to be our 30th Birthday… and reading all of your comments and posts, it seems like most of you are just as excited as I am!

But in all the excitement, I forgot to let you know that we'll also be continuing our time-honored Mystery Science tradition with our annual "Turkey Day Marathon," where we serve up six wonderful classic episodes of MST3K.

And, since we know some of you won't want to choose, we're actually going to make this year's Turkey Day Marathon available starting the weekend before Thanksgiving, so that you can see both.

See? Turkey Days are here again!

Anyway, we're still figuring out the details, but we'll let you know where you can watch soon.

Now, I'm still working with Ivan to finish up another update for the end of this week, which should cover a lot of "housekeeping" details I want to share with you, like:

  • The results of the "Season 12 Pledge Drive"
  • When to expect your new pledge rewards
  • How to get our final "leftover" Kickstarter rewards from Season 11
  • What to do if you're still missing some of your old pledge rewards
  • What's happening with the long-awaited MST3K Coffee Table Book

But today, I want to let you know about two other Kickstarter projects that could use our help… and they both end this weekend!

First of all, did you know there are Mystery Science Theater 3000 trading cards?

Last November, our friends at RRParksCards wanted to make official MST3K TRADING CARDS. So, they actually launched their own Kickstarter to get them made, and I've gotta tell you: the first series of cards came out in April, and they were really nice.

That's why I'm pleased to share that RRParks has decided to make a second series of MST3K cards… and just like last time, they're offering special "pre-order pricing" through their new Kickstarter, which ends this Sunday!

Click here to back the OFFICIAL MST3K TRADING CARDS: SERIES TWO before Sunday!

PROJECT #2: Bring Back The Aquabats!

There's also another Kickstarter ending this weekend that I want to tell you about, because it could use our help and support, and also because I think a lot of you might really enjoy it.

It's for that beloved superhero rock band, The Aquabats!

If you’ve never heard of them, I could only describe them as hilarious shirttail cousins to Mystery Science Theater 3000. Their television show, The Aquabats! Super Show! was full of obscure references, puppets and cheesy monsters. (Also, the creator of the Aquabats brought the amazing Yo Gabba Gabba! into the world.)

And you know, to be honest, a big part of the reason I'd like to help them is because this project is also really important to Ivan, the brilliant guy who ran our Kickstarter, and is now one of our producers on MST3K. See, even though he's moved on from crowdfunding, Ivan agreed to run one last Kickstarter to help out The Aquabats, because – just like he did with MST3K – he saw how important the show was to the fans, and wanted to help them get it back.

So yeah, if you haven't seen it yet, The Aquabats' Kickstarter is one of the most well-designed and entertaining Kickstarter campaigns I've ever seen, and even has its own plot and villains. Actually, if you watch their videos, you'll even see a few cameos from some members of the MST3K family, who jumped in to help out!

Anyway, it's a really great project – especially for MSTies who have kids – so I hope you'll consider giving them a hand. That's why I want to make a special offer:

Any MST3K backer who pledges $5 or more to The Aquabats Kickstarter before Sunday at 5pm PST will be entered to win some big MST3K prizes, including gift packs, tour tickets, and an invitation to see the next new episode at a PRIVATE SCREENING with me and Jonah!

Pretty good, right? Here's how it works:

  • Use the same Kickstarter account you used to back MST3K.
  • Join the Aquabats Kickstarter before 5PM PST on Saturday (9/29).
  • Make any pledge of $5 or more to enter, or...
  • Pledge at least $10 to get five entries!
  • After their campaign ends, I'll draw names to select the winners!

So, there you go: two more chances to help two more really great Kickstarter projects, and to support another group of fans who are fighting to get their television show back.

I'll be back with another update this week to answer a lot of your open questions, but right now, these projects could use a hand from the MST3K Revival League… so go check them out!

Cheers and Thanks,

Listen up, meat puppets! Now that I've got a steady job again, I want to decide what shows live and what shows die. So, if you post these messages and you make a pledge to help The Aquabats, I'll sneak your name into Joel's drawing again.

Just post this message and/or picture to social media NOW:

Join me! Together we can #BringBackTheAquabats the way #WeBroughtBackMST3K! Pledge $5 or more before Sept 29 & you could win some HUGE @MST3K prizes!

I've never thought that the mistakes by this Kickstarter were intentional or deliberate. But data has been misused with consequences for backers; the Mystery Gift foul-up where somehow the correct number of bought and paid for add-on gifts weren't ordered due to "a setting in Backer Kit being wrong" (meaning a software or database error that no human caught in a date review process), the duplication where some backers received a second, duplicate rewards shipment, and the continuing problem of some backers still not in receipt of t-shirts and hoodies ordered as add-ons over a year ago, where somehow those orders seemed to have vanished. There is a possibility that the backers who backed the Zappa Kickstarter and the MST3K Kickstarter skewed heavily toward early MST3K backers; you'd have to know the total number of dual backers and their backer numbers to calculate actual probabilities. But to have all the Zappa winners be picked from the first 4% of backers who contributed to MST3K is highly improbable. Think of it in terms of coin flipping - it's possible to get 20 heads in a row, but the fewer total flips you have the less likely that outcome becomes. Again, it's totally possible, but given the problems in correctly processing backer data in other aspects of the Kickstarter, it's also possible that the data set of eligible backer numbers was incomplete or incorrectly entered into the random number drawing. It could even be a fault in the random number generator programming. Not a conspiracy, not deliberate. Just a mistake.

@Anthony Altieri You have to pay to see the new episodes???? You poor guy. My condolences.

    3. Ivan Askwith Collaborator on

@Anthony + Melody: Don't want to speak for Joel, but I'm pretty sure our plan is to still have a scheduled, posted time for the traditional TURKEY DAY MARATHON of classic episodes -- one the weekend before, one on Turkey Day -- for MSTies who want to watch together. That's a SUPER important part of the tradition, and we wouldn't want to lose it. We just know that some people will want to watch the new episodes as soon as they can, and don't want them to miss out on being able to join in with the old episodes too. So no, you don't have to subscribe to Netflix to be part of a Turkey Day event!
@Melody: I'm honestly not sure how to respond to your comment about the Zappa drawing winners, which makes it sound like there was some kind of conspiracy. The names were chosen through an actual random number drawing, not through some specific preference for lower numbers, or with priority to lower backer numbers. I'm sorry if you were disappointed in the results, or feel like they were unfair somehow.

I have to say the release timing is a mistake, and honestly makes no sense to me. I'd MUCH rather have the Turkey Day Marathon ON TURKEY DAY, and then release the new season at midnight or something.

I agree with Melody, James. It's not just watching some old episodes (many of which are likely available on youtube). It's the tweet chats that go with it. Or watching them as a family. So, now we have to get the gang together TWICE? Not to mention, the new season is cool and all... but I have to PAY TO SEE IT as I don't have Netflix. So I have to subscribe now for my Turkey Day Marathon on actual Turkey Day?

I'm very disappointed. I understand the reasoning. But I think you folk misread a fair segment of your fan-base. Not all... but not a small number either.

Nice that we get a double helping of Turkey Day, thanks! And thanks as well for plugging The Aquabats! I've been an Aquabacker since their first launch on here and am glad they are making a comeback as well. Good times!

    7. Theo Thourson

Er, I'd just be really careful with that random drawing for backers because I believe it goes against Kickstarter rules and could get the Aquabats team in some trouble. I'd just run it by the Kickstarter powers-that-be, if you haven't already, before going through with it. It's a very nice idea of course, and I'm glad you're helping them fund their show. Just want to make sure no one has any problems down the line.

So glad to hear the traditional Turkey Day Marathon lives on in addn to the new season premiere! But agree with others here that would rather it be on actual Turkey Day - I mean, the beauty of Netflix is you can watch those episodes at your leisure. Turkey Day is about the togetherness of watching your "comfort food" with your MSTie family. What do you think, sirs?

    9. Nicholas Haney on

This is so awesome. I backed this during the beginning because I loved the show and now my other favorite show is involved. You got your peanut butter in my chocolate!

    10. Melissa

I've already backed both of them before it was cool. I don't even have kids!

    11. Armor10 on

But Joel I’m already part of the Legion of Righteous Comrades backing the show at the $80.00 level, and I posted Crows message like the Supreme Overlord ordered. Am I already entered into the drawing?

Vince, I logged in to say the same. Aquabats are my jelly to my MST3K peanut butter. The Aquabats are the ham to my MST3K cheese. The Aquabats are... oh what's another analogy... my sleeveless hoodie to my MST3K sweat pants of power. That one kind of fell apart. Point is I couldn't imagine one without the other. Awesome they got a shout out from Joel and the crew!

    13. Vince Vazquez

Psssh. I pledged to the Aquabats before you guys told me to and made it cool :P

Heck I pledged to the first version of that Kickstarter. I really liked that show on the Hub.... stupid Hasbro had to go and mismanaged that channel. *sigh*

At any rate, awesome to see you guys send some love their way! MST3K and the Aquabats are two great tastes that go great together!

    14. Melody Fohr on

It's not really a Turkey Day marathon if it's not on Thanksgiving, is it? I mean, most of us have access to watching the old episodes pretty much when we want, it's the interaction and camaraderie with other fans on Thanksgiving itself that makes it special. So unless it's broadcast at a specific time, instead of the implications that the phrase "starting the weekend before", it's lost all the magic. What makes it different from going to Shout Factory TV or Pluto any other time?

Also, when picking the Aquabats winners, go a little deeper into the 48,270 strong backer list than the first 1739 backers you used to choose the 20 Zappa winners. (See Update #39, October 19, 2016)

    15. C. Kevin Brennan on

If I already backed The Aquabats with a hefty pledge the day they launched (and relaunched) their campaign, I should be good to go right?

Oh man, MST3K and The Aquabats together is so Super Rad, it stinks! This is my family's happy Venn Diagram overlap. We even have a pet Tarantula named Professor Jones surrounded by geodes and orbited by a tiny Satellite of Love - Woo Packers!

    17. Bruce Pullen on

I backed Aquabats for $25. Everyone has that property they hope might come back. I'm simply paying it forward. Thanks Joel!

    18. James on

The most fun for me on Turkey Day was joining in at the same time as everyone else, like one big family. It got even better when we were all social-mediaing asking with it. It just won't be the same knowing everyone already watched it or watched at different times. I miss the group thing and being live and all that.

    19. ginger j fitts on

I backed Aquabats at the $25.00 level...I'm not so much a fan...just love to see the quirky thrive!

Do we need to enter for the drawing or anything after backing Aquabats? I kicked in $10 and opted for no rewards, curious how you'll know who to include in the drawing.

    21. ReptilianSamurai on

So if I already backed The Aquabats, I'm entered, right?
