Dear MST3K Revival League,

Hey, it's Joel again. How are you? Things have been pretty amazing around the Alternaversal offices for the last couple of months, and super busy. It’s also been a very creative time, which is what I love most about my job.

Last time I updated you, we were in post-production for Season 12, and this week we just delivered all the new episodes to Netflix. But over the last two months, we also put out the first issue of our new Mystery Science Theater 3000 comic book, visited DragonCon for a bunch of panels and events, and, of course, have been getting ready to hit the road for our big MST3K LIVE: 30th Anniversary Tour, which kicks off on October 9th. Yowza!

So yeah, I guess what I'm trying to say is: it feels like MST3K is in a really good place these days, and that's thanks to all of you.

Anyway, I've been working on an update to send out later this week with a few more deets, but this morning, I've got a big announcement to share, and I didn't want to wait... because this is awesome!

See, as most of you probably know, the first episode of Mystery Science Theater aired on Minneapolis' KTMA on Thanksgiving Day – or Turkey Day, as we have come to call it – way back in 1988.

That means that this year, on Thanksgiving, our little show turns thirty!

And ever since #WeBroughtBackMST3K together, it's been really important to me to do something special to celebrate such a big milestone.

That's why I wanted to personally let you know that...

The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, November 22, 2018!

It's a Turkey Day Miracle, y'all!

This Thanksgiving, Netflix will serve up six brand-new episodes of Mystery Science Theater. That means you can binge-eat turkey and binge-view movie cheese at the same time... and that we'll have a new season of MST3K, just in time for our 30th Anniversary!

You can read a little more about it over at The AV Club, but I'm really pleased with how the new season turned out, and think they might be some of our best episodes yet, so I can't wait for you to see them.

So yeah, that's the big news for today… but I'll have more updates for you later this week, because there are a few things I want to share before our tour starts.

So, stay tuned!

Cheers & Thanks,

Joel

What about the traditional marathon? It's the best thing about the holiday. You curl up with a sarcastic cat under a blanket. Somehow your plate gets empty, but you're still hungry and someone else has a messy face. How can you not enjoy something like that?

    2. Karen from NOLA on

This has made my year (aside from the set visits, of course). I'll be at the Dino Hotel, bingeing the new season. Thank you so SO very much for making this happen! <3 <3

I’m an avid fan and supporter, but I live outside of Netflix’s area to watch S12 on turkey day!!! What can I do?

    4. Lazarus Dark on

I hope you still do a marathon with Shout Factory, I've looked forward to those every year since they brought it back. Maybe you could time it so Shout has a marathon until like 6pm, then the new season unlocks on Netflix?

WOOOOOOOOO. I've turned to MST3K in the past to brighten up my Turkey Day and I'm already looking forward to this year's and the new season to keep up that tradition :D

have to say that the number of episodes makes me a little sad.
I understand that the show is longer than most shows, and that the combo of 90+ minute episodes and 14 episodes in the season made Season 11 un-bingeable.
      but frankly - so what?
does everything need to geared toward the least common denominator?
this show was never made for the "masses", nor was it ever embraced by them.

I guess I now have to hope that Season 13 will come out in 6 months (or less!) and have another six shows?

I am not exactly overjoyed that the Season 12 Blu-Ray Collector's Box will have six shows.
Never thought Season 7 would surrender its title of "shortest ever"

all that being said - I am looking forward to it. I just have to fulfill my duty as an American to complain about the great life I am living.
As my Dad once told me, "some folks would complain if you hung them with a *new* rope; there's just no pleasing them."

The tour totally bypasses Hawaii but at least we'll be able to tune in to the Turkey Day miracle that is season 12 with the rest of the country.

Fantastic! I still have a Turkey Day marathon every year. This will make it perfect. Thanks to Joel, Jonah and all the cast and crew. See you in Royal Oak.

Thank you Joel and crew! Great news indeed!

STILL no news on the coffee table book? It's been YEARS.

I think that I am going to watch one episode a week for six weeks. That way, I can make it last longer. Hey, I'm still singing: "Every country, has a monster, their afraid of, in their Na-tiooon....."

      Loving this stuff!

    13. Philip Stephens on

I would prefer to know the context in which Patton made his remark. If it was part of a stand-up routine, well, he does swear in those, so I don’t consider that a big deal. You can dislike his stand-up without disliking him entirely, you know. His role as Max is as far away from his stand-up comedy as you can get, and shouldn’t be equated.

    14. thermogimp on

The only thing that I don't like about this is that there are only six new episodes. That's going to go by WAY too fast, you guys!

    15. Bret Wheadon on

Well, LIKE just isn't BIG enough for what I'm feelin! WOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOO!

So glad Jonah is back from the dead! I was really worried when I saw the end of last season's finale. "Don't tell me they killed him off already?!" Have had my ticket to the live show for months now & keep it in a handy place so I won't lose it. Looking forward to seeing Jonah and Joel. Joel is such a cutie and charmer, and has aged well. Say, Joel, are you single? Heh, just kidding. I'm not looking for romance.

Didn't know Patton Oswalt actually told Trump supporters to f themselves. Makes me see him in a new light, though I do enjoy the Son of TV's Frank character, and am still looking forward to watching the new season. I do believe in the right of people to express their political views, but resorting to profanity and insults instead of using reasonable words & arguments to defend your view is inexcusably rude (& actually counterproductive to your cause, as it makes it look like you can't defend your views with sound arguments), and I think people of any political opinion should be able to agree with this.

    18. Heidi Ruff on

A Turkey Day miracle indeed! I know what I'll be doing. ;)

    19. Jesse Larson on

Trump supporters are too thin skinned to accept any criticism of their idol... so sorry to see you go, Hugh. BYE!

On a more pleasant note, any word on the coffee tablet book ship date?

    20. Eric Riebling on

So happy & excited for you and so appreciative of your relentless creativity - and the team's!
An unrelated, but welcome observation; How cool is it that on Pluto TV, there are channels dedicated to MST3k and RiffTrax? I think that's super cool! So many treasured turkeys and riffs :)

    21. Paul Rabogliatti on

Fantastic news! I'm so looking forward to seeing the new eps! By the way, any news as to when the pictures from this year's on-set visits will be posted? Been dying to see mine. Keep up the great work!

    22. J. "Lord Dalek" Henderson on

Will there be a Twitch marathon to go along with this per tradition?

    23. Iron Curtain (Chiptunes) on

@Mark Andrew Edwards & @Michael Gonzales: I'm sure the "hot bodies" of Crow, Tom Servo, and Gypsy will make sense once in context. It's probably a host segment or something in a similar nature…

    24. Iron Curtain (Chiptunes) on

@Hugh Curran: I'm confused as to what you were expecting out of the MST3K revival, especially considering the show's past Donald Trump riffs (see here: https://youtu.be/UlvbUigsxf8). Also, they've gone after politicians, such as the Bob Packwood riff in "MANOS": The Hands of Fate. Third, past members of the show aren't shy about their (usually left) political leanings, such as Frank Conniff and Bill Corbett. So I can't help but be confused as to why you find Patton Oswalt's presence so odious, considering that his political leanings don't bleed into his character or written lines. Please explain.

    25. James on

OMG Joel! This is amazing news! I can not wait for Thanksgiving this year!!!

    26. ArkhamNative on

Crazy math: Netflix releases shows around 2am Central Time. Six episodes at maybe 90 minutes each equals 9 hours. Ooh, it will be possible to binge them before afternoon gathering commitments. (And then maybe watch them again later that day.) :D

    27. Mike Rucki on

@ Jundle, Joel says in the post "This Thanksgiving, Netflix will serve up six brand-new episodes of Mystery Science Theater."

    28. Iron Curtain (Chiptunes) on

@Jundle: 6 Episodes. And If it should be like last season, the episodes will be 1 1/2 hours long.

Smells like great news to me! Can't wait to hear what movies were done this season!

    30. Jundle on

anyone know how many episodes (and how long each episode is) for this season?

    31. Michael Gonzales on

I have to agree with Mark. Gypsy and Tom with legs? Uhhhh...

And I hope you do the Turkey Day Marathon too. Yeah I knw that you're all super busy. The Live Tour continues until Nov 17.

So, how about fan guest hosts (revival league members) hosting the marathon?
How about Joe Flaherty coming in as Count Floyd to host the Marathon?
How about the real (and confused) Leonard Maltin hosting the Marathon?

Oh, and the comic book is great. I wasn't sure how you were going to do it but you made it work. It's terrific. Looking forward to more.

    32. Jeff G. - Armikrog Army on

So does this mean no Turkey Day Marathon? Would it be bad for the launch of the season to do a Turkey Day Marathon?

I'm a Trump supporter, and since Patton Oswalt has invited me to "go F yourself," I'll follow his McCarthy-like mandate and stay away. I'm sure all "liberal" fans will cheer this exclusion. Remember when MST3K brought us together to laugh? Ah, well...

I hope they slow the riffs down. The jokes come at you so fast it's hard to follow and enjoy the bad movie.
