The Next Host of MST3K. Plus: a 24-Hour CHALLENGE!

Good morning, MST3K Revival Leaguers.

How was your weekend?

I hope it was less hectic than mine. I'm doing my best to keep up with all of this, but my life is usually a bit more, I don’t know… serene? But we gotta "make hay while the sun shines,” so we'll plow on. (See what I did there?)

We've got 25 days left in our Kickstarter, and I've still got so many surprises planned. In fact, I think I might send another update later this afternoon, giving you that sneak peek at the new artwork I promised.

So maybe this is, like... your breakfast update?

  • IMPORTANT: Just 24 HOURS LEFT to reach $2M during our first week!
  • BONUS OFFER: Free episode downloads if we get there in time!
  • REMINDER: on Kickstarter, you always PLEDGE NOW but PAY LATER!
  • PLUS, BIG NEWS: Joel reveals his choice for MST3K's next host!

Can we reach the first $2MM before 11am tomorrow?

Our Kickstarter launched last Tuesday at 10:30am PST. That means that with just 24 hours left in our first week, we're 91% of the way to our first goal.

That's pretty amazing, huh?

But if we want to shoot a full 12 episodes – and prove that the world is ready for more MST3K – we need to send a message… and that message will be even louder if we can raise the first $2MM in under a week.

That's why, if you're on the fence, today is the day to jump down onto the "Yes, I Want More MST3K" side. We're depending on the support of fans like you.

Yeah, I know. I sound like PBS. But hey, maybe this will help:

1. If we reach $2M in the next 24 hours, we'll add in a free bonus reward – downloads of three classic episodes – for all pledges at $35 and up!

That's right, friends! If we can raise the first $2,000,000 by tomorrow at 10:30 AM ET, we'll UPGRADE THE REWARDS for all pledges at $35 and above to include a downloadable "Thank You" collection of three classic episodes. I'll hand-pick them, just for you!

Just think: that's an extra $30 VALUE for FREE: 270 classic minutes of MST3K… and that's if you only watch each episode once!

If you're at a lower level, TODAY is a great time to INCREASE YOUR PLEDGE TO $35 or higher.

Plus, when you do, you'll be helping us reach our first goal and unlock the bonus downloads! Everyone wins, huh?

2. On Kickstarter, you actually PLEDGE NOW but PAY LATER!

One thing a lot of people don't realize about Kickstarter is that you're not paying when you make your pledge… you're just pledging to pay later! So if you've been waiting until you can save a little more, but are already planning to pledge later in the month, please consider pledging today.

No matter when you pledge, your credit card won't be charged until the Kickstarter ends on December 11th… so there's no need to wait!

If you think you'll be able to swing it, and want to make (or increase) your pledge now, that would be great. (Just be careful. I have a feeling this is how this is how America's debt crisis began.)

Now, let's get to the worst-kept secret elephant in the room.

Don't worry, Joike. You get used to it after a while.

Like I said in the video, the same disclaimer still applies here: until we reach $2MM and know we'll be able to #BringBackMST3K, I can't make any formal offers to actors or writers – not the old team, and not the new team. But if everything works out, here's my plan:

I'm hoping Jonah Ray will suit up as "Jonah Heston," the next host of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

If you listen to the Nerdist podcast, maybe you already know about Jonah. He's one of the co-hosts, along with Chris Hardwick and Matt Mira.

I probably met Jonah about three years ago, when I did the podcast and we talked about MST3K. It was a fun gig, and two things were really clear: I liked all three of those guys very much, and they all seemed to really love MST3K. They knew all about it, which always makes interviews easier. We had a great time and I left with a really good impression of Jonah.

Later that night, I went out with my buddy Rob Schrab to see our friend Dan Harmon record his wonderful podcast, Harmontown, in the backroom at Meltdown Comics. Jonah came along, and I found out that I liked the guy in real life too. He was a good hang.

In a move that may have been the most instinctual thing I've ever done, I asked Jonah to come help me write jokes for an awards show gig. He did, we started working on jokes together, and it just clicked: He was just incredibly funny and easy to write with – there was flow, really – and who can ask for anything more? I guess I also just felt like his heart was in the right place, and I could see how much he loved and understood MST3K. I think that's when I started thinking about inviting him to be the next host on MST3K, if we ever got to come back.

About a year after that, I asked him what he thought about it. He said "yes" right away, without a second of hesitancy, and we've been talking about it ever since.

Since this is the internet, I guess some people will hear this news and rush to declare – for better and for worse – "what this means for the future of MST3K." (In fact, since a lot of people guessed that it was Jonah's voice in our first video, that's already happening!)

I can't really tell you what kind of host Jonah is going to be, but I hope you'll give him a chance to show you. And even if you're familiar with Jonah's career, remember: that doesn't mean he'll bring the same exact approach to MST3K. I think a lot of you may be surprised. Plus, like the previous members of our cast, I think Jonah has great instincts and a lot of range. He's funny, he's wicked smart, and like I said, his heart's in the right place. He loves MST3K, he seems to understand what makes it so special, and most important, I know he takes the role seriously.

At the end of the day, he's just another regular guy in a yellow jumpsuit – not so different from you and me. I'm excited to see what he can bring to the next hundred episodes of Mystery Science Theater, until it's time to hand the jumpsuit over to someone else.

Okay, now that that's done, I'm going to go work on the next update for you, where I'll give you a first look at what we're planning for the OFFICIAL CAMPAIGN POSTER and the COLLECTIBLE POSTCARD rewards.

And remember... if we reach $2MM by 10:30am ET tomorrow, all pledges at $35 and up will get a FREE BONUS REWARD: three classic episode downloads, yours to keep. If you've been waiting to increase your pledge, today's the day!

I'll be back this afternoon, but until then…

Keep Circulating The URL!

Cheers and Thanks,

Joel

I think we need Ashley Burch as the new mad.

Team Jonah in a whole new way! Jonah is a great comedian and a HUGE fan of the show, his specials have all been named after MST3K quotes. This is NOT Nerdist and NOT @Midnight so other than the skills, I doubt all the writers would let the political personal leanings into the show. Any conservative's head would probably explode if they read TV's Frank Conniff's twitter feed. It's just a show, REALLY, just relax! Long time caller, first time poster...

It's a long shot in asking, but those 3 free download episodes that will be offered if we meet the $2million goal by 10.30AM... Any chance that at least 1 of them could be one of the lost KTMA episodes? I know you guys have your stand on the KTMA era, but die hard fans have been wanting those 3 episodes for the longest time and it would be a nice reward for us.

I actually have no idea who the new guy is, but he's been good in the videos so far!

Again, is there any way we can promote this kickstarter in public radio? I wonder if Bill Gates is a fan, he could certainly donate a few million, hahaha.

I'm with Flatfingers. I can get insulted by social justice vitriol on Twitter for free. I don't want to be like Servo that time he sponsored Crow's art exhibit. Good luck everyone. I'm out.

Well you're only filling the shoes of two of the comic geniuses of the last quarter century. No pressure. :) Welcome to the family, Jonah!

Sigh. I reluctantly stopped watching @Midnight because over the past year it's become so relentlessly, nastily, one-sidedly political. Choosing Jonah Ray makes me wonder if that same sort of meanness will be part of the new MST3K.

I've been a MSTie since Season One, so I know Joel and the gang are left of center. It never felt angry on the show, though. MST3K was always fun to watch even if it made me roll my eyes occasionally.

But politics has gotten so spiteful and vicious these days, and Jonah Ray has been right there in it. I'd be disappointed if that was brought into the new MST3K.

That said, I trust Joel. I have no intention of canceling or even reducing my KS pledge, because I believe that Joel will keep things from getting too harsh. If Joel thinks Jonah Ray feels right for this gig, then I'm willing to give him a fair chance.

Just try to tweak your own guys once in a while, please. ;)

Dan Harmon the guy behind Community? Cool!
PS: Ditto on the Felicia Day recommendation. At least for a cameo or something. Ooooo! What if she was the mad's assistant, but also Jonah's love interest? Secretly trying to (occasionally) get him back to earth without the mad finding out....Yeah! And then Jonah breaks her heart so she gets mad and starts sending him *extra* bad movies!

I was totally good with a new cast as soon as I knew Joel was behind the reboot. Every role on the show got re-cast at one point or another anyway, so good luck to the new "new guy"!

    21. Gabriel Amos on

      Cool. Still excited.

Of course now you made me wish Dan Harmon would be involved somehow. Guest writer for an episode or two? Cameo?

    22. Mike H on

Fantastic choice! And the tone of these Kickstarter videos has been PERFECT. Totally in keeping with the spirit of the MST3K we know and love!

    23. Jeff DeSilva on

My pledge has been duly upped. I first saw MST3K as a teenager in California. We later moved to Minneapolis. All I knew about Minnesota was that it was ridiculously cold in the winter. The big bright spot was that I'd live where MST3K was made. I remember driving through Hopkins on the freeway with my family somehow thinking I would be able to see the studio from our car (speaking of which, please install a luxor-style light on the new studio, k thx). Speaking as a long time fan, I can't wait to see what Jonah does with it. I'm sure he will be a luxor-style beacon of comedic genius to MSTies everywhere (but seriously, put in that light).

    24. Lynn Knott on

Too bad we couldn't have a little video clip that would pop up every time a milestone was hit on the toteboard, like the old Jerry Lewis timpani, only cooler.

    25. John Skeel, Double Double 007 on

@Ross Anderson - Oh no! A great comedic actor who gets along with the creator, knows movies, loves MST3K, and can banter with the robots! The show might be great! We're DOOMED! DOOMED, I TELL YOU. This could spell the end of civilization. Joel may as well have hit the Earth with an extinction level asteroid, or a world-wide re-release of Battlefield Earth!
There. Feel better? A little Internet security blanket just for you.

    26. Adam Salzer on

SO pumped! Jonah is going to be awesome! I can't wait even more...less?...anyway I'm super excited now!

Hi Joel. I just backed this project in response to this post to help hit the goal in time to earn the bonus for everyone. Based on my anecdotal experience, the MSTies that still haven't backed largely fall into two camps (with quite a bit of overlap): those who are ambivalent because of a lack of a clear endorsement from other former cast members and those who are ambivalent about the new cast. I think that if you can address those concerns I think you'll unlock a lot of money from people who love MST3K aren't 100% sold on this project.

    29. Jorel Levenson on

    37. Jesse Shade on

Well, DUR-HEY! I read the Entertainment Weekly article, I knew this was more or less official. I have not listened to the Nerdist, but I have been surveying Jonah's work on the YouTubes and I think he's perfect. He knows movies and he's got a casual relatable delivery instead of being all "THIS IS A JOKE, AND THIS IS A PUNCHLINE, YOU CAN LAUGH NOW!" That, to me, is priority number 1, and for that, Joel, I just may up my pledge.

Now if we can get Felicia Day, Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yount confirmed, I think we can sell a lot more people on the new show. (Again, not any insider info there, it was in the new Entertainment Weekly.)

@Joel, another way to get current pledges to increase while adding value to the pledges is through add-ons to existing pledges...here are a few suggestions of possible add on ideas...price point to be determined.

      1. Digital Download of Season
      2. Extra Shirts
      3. Moar Coffee Mugs
      4. Additional Post Cards (assuming they aren't personalized or if they are specify who the extras are for)
      5. Bonus Stickers
      6. Increased Amount of Posters
      7. Maybe you need USB Drives of the Season
      8. DVDs/Blu Rays
      9. Fresh new clothing options add on like hats/jumpsuits
      10. Some kind of personalized message (audio/video/tweet)

just a few ideas that came from scanning the front page

    42. Rob Vincent on

This bodes well for MST:TNG. Looking forward to it!

Glad the rumors were true about Jonah Ray! I love him on Nerdist, and I know he and the rest of the guys are HUGE fans of MST3K. I feel like he'd bring something new, but also stay true to the original spirit of the show. Full confidence in this reboot, and...yeah, upping my pledge. :D
