"One life for all of creation..."
Timeline is a live-action short film that tells a story of blind exploration into the unknown, and the dangers that can occur when the repercussions are taken lightly. It's an incredibly entertaining and intense journey, and we want you all to be a part of it.
How far will someone go to save those he loves? Are those people worth the danger others can be put in? The collateral damage?
Our story follows a young Captain named Nicholas Wyn in the late twenty first century’s military as he uses the technology of time travel to go back in time to save his wife, ignoring his morality to do so, but his use of the device causes the degradation of his timeline, leading to the total destruction of all creation.
It combines to very opposing forces to create the drama and thrill of the story: Nicholas versus time itself. He does everything in his power to fight against the set rules and concrete regulations his timeline has set on him.
Timeline is the product of over a year of hard work from myself and over sixty other talented students here at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). This film is the pinnacle of my work, and the entire cast and crew want it to be piece of true quality in every respect.
To spark your interest, we're happy to show you the first five scenes of the film, in a short animatic form. This is a work in progress and was worked on by 6 storyboarding artists with some great talent.
I'm sure you know there are a lot of student films made every year. And I mean a lot. But many of them feel simply out of place as a short film, telling a story that lacks structure: a beginning, middle, and end. It's either too big for the allotted time or too small to tell a decent story.
Timeline hits that sweet spot of what a short film is. It has all the means to be an incredible short, one of the best this school and beyond will see.
It is to be a beautiful piece of visual storytelling. We've spent the last year creating this world and getting it ready for you all. Every detail has been covered, from the military organization of the last 21st century, to their wardrobe, environment, weapons, and so on.
All of this combined together gives us the capability to make a short with the quality of a full length feature film, all put into the compact, powerful story of a short film.
This is the largest budget I've ever put into a short film. It's a lot of money that, as a student, I can't put out from my own pocket (though I certainly wish I could). As you're looking at this project, I know it takes a great deal of trust in us to potentially support this project. Keeping that in mind, I'd like to explain why you are making a good decision to support us:
As I said previously, this project is the outcome of over a year of work. The script itself has evolved to tell a much stronger story in an even shorter span. It's gone from approximately 12 pages in the initial drafts to just over 5. And, as these changes have developed, I've been lucky enough to see it go from a script I wrote on my own, to a project that has a very large crew of incredibly talented and dedicated peers of mine, spanning across many majors at my school. It's their talent that has made this film what it is now and will continue to push the film further into the production process.
I owe it to them for their time, effort, and raw talent to put my all into this and create the best film possible.
I've worked on many films in many positions in my time at SCAD and beyond. With the connections I've made and the knowledge I've gained through my work, I plan to use every bit of your support to this project to make sure it is an incredible piece.
Our entire cast and crew are volunteers to the project. As students, we don't have all the financial resources immediately available to us. To make the highest quality film, we need your help more than anything. Filmmaking is riddled with extra costs, but we keep a budget ready for ourselves for the entirety. This includes but is not limited to:
- Transportation: As we get our locations, it is obvious that with such a large crew that transporting them and equipment will not be cheap
- Equipment: Anything from lenses to lights, all to make the film look its best
- Craft Services (Food): Our crew is going to be working for free, so we want to make sure they're happy!
- Location Permits: The city of Savannah is a great environment for a filmmaker, but permits still cost a good bit per day!
- Art Department: Anything from wardrobe to production design to props, there is a lot that's going into creating this world, and we want to make sure it's amazing
- Final Distribution: Films aren't completed just when a final export of the project is made! Getting the word on the film out there is yet another expense.
I'm sure you can tell by how many times I've said this, but the entire cast and crew wants this project to be amazing. We want it to be something you'll never forget. This may be a Senior project for my school, but what we want for it expands out beyond that.
The film is to eventually go into the festival circuit and to have an online distribution circuit as well. It's the recognition here that will ultimately start that process to making sure an even wider audience has the opportunity to see the final film.
And another note for potential backers: we're going to have a few drawings for people to get even better rewards! Here's how it'll go:
Our $5 backers: Get one entry into the drawing
Our $10 backers: Get two entries into the drawing
Our $15 backers: Get three entries! ...and so on with all the reward tiers!
So what do you get with this drawing? Well, we'll be drawing six names from all those who have entries into this! Three will get a "Class C" prize (Special Edition disc copy and Poster), two will get a "Class B" prize (Special Edition disc copy, Poster, Tee, and a video chat while we are on set), and one will get a "Class A" prize (every single reward, including all the special edition items, including our $3000 tier reward and everything below).
And another perk! If you point someone our way and they donate to us, just send a message to me and you'll get additional entries equal to the entries that person backed for.
But, of course, we need to reach our goal for this to work! So we hope you all are as excited as we are!
Kickstarter is an all or nothing campaign system. We have our budget set, and we know what we need to do, but without your support, the film won't be possible.
The journey of this project has been incredible, and there's a lot more to be done. We want you to a part of it all, so your journey with Timeline starts today.
Risks and challenges
As with any film set, Murphy's Law will always be a key player. Anything that can happen will happen. Even if we prepare ourselves for something that could go wrong, something even more unexpected can or will happen.
A passion for filmmaking does not allow us to escape every problem we may in the production process. However, we have dedicated ourselves to creating a schedule and being prepared for the unforeseen obstacles that may come our way. It's happened before with other films I, and others, have created, but there is always a way to overcome and complete the project.
Myself and others on the cast and crew will be making sure that we have a strong plan, and even backups from Plan A to Plan Z, all to make sure that things run smoothly, and we create the best project possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
