Entromancy: Hacker Battles is a competitive card game based on creating and deploying programs, which are in turn comprised of functions, represented by cards. There are 15 unique functions in the game, and two copies of each function included in each of the game's two decks, for a total of 60 cards.

Each round of Entromancy: Hacker Battles is divided into three phases: Initialize {}, Compile {}, and Execute {}.  Each player takes a turn within each phase before the game moves on to the next phase.

During the Initialize {} phase, each player is dealt 5 functions, face down, from the top of the deck, creating a hand.

During the Compile {} phase, each player creates a program by playing functions one at a time from their hand, face up, from left to right in their playing area.

During the Execute {} phase, all BP accrual or depletion is resolved, to a minimum of 0.

Objective Cards and Winning the Game

There are five Objective cards in Entromancy: Hacker Battles, including:

  • Reach 10 bit points (BP)

  • Spend 20 variables

  • Execute {} five times

  • Exchange functions with an opponent four times

  • Play or cause 5 inactive functions

If you’re playing for the first time, we recommend using the first Objective card, “Reach 10 bit points (BP).”

Function Sockets and Using Inactive Functions

Each player has five function sockets, into which they play their functions, from left to right, on their turns.  Each socket has a value, from 1 to 5, beginning with the leftmost socket (1) and ending with the rightmost socket (5).  Placing a function into a socket makes the function active.

Once per round, each player may place a function face down in a socket instead of face up to create an inactive function, which has no effect and provides no benefit from the function text.

Hacking Specializations and Using Variables

Your Hacking Specialization represents a special skill that only your character has access to.  Some Hacking Specializations grant unique passive bonuses, while others utilize variables to power special hacking abilities.  Many functions accrue variables when you play them, which you can then spend to deploy your Hacking Specialization’s active ability.

Unlike bit points, which are accrued during the Execute {} phase, variables are accrued immediately - and only once - during the Compile {} phase, and can be used instantly.

Additionally, you can spend 5 variables on your turn to discard a function from your hand and replace it with the one at the top of your deck.

Advanced Game Setups

If you’re comfortable with the basic game setup of Entromancy: Hacker Battles and are looking for more challenge, you can use one or both of the advanced game setups.

Custom Decks: Before each Hacker Battle, instead of using all 30 functions in each deck, create a deck for yourself comprised of 15 total functions.  You can have up to two functions of each type in your deck.  At the beginning of each Hacker Battle, shuffle your deck of 15 functions, and place it to the right of your playing area, underneath your Hacking Specialization.

Multiple Objective Cards: Before each Hacker Battle, instead of using one Objective card for all players, have each player select their own Objective card in secret.  The player who achieves their Objective card first wins the game.

Playing Entromancy: Hacker Battles with Entromancy: A Cyberpunk Fantasy RPG

You can play Entromancy: Hacker Battles instead of using the built-in Hacking system in Entromancy: A Cyberpunk Fantasy RPG by incorporating Basic, Advanced, and Specialized Hacking feats.

Basic Hacking is available to all characters at no cost, and allows you to select from 10 functions to create your deck of 15 functions.  You can have up to two functions of each type in your deck, and can modify your deck, but not your selected functions, at any time outside of a Hacker Battle.

Advanced Hacking must be purchased by your character in place of another feat, talent, or spell that you would normally unlock after completing a mission, and allows you to select from all 15 functions to create your deck of 15 functions.  You can have up to two functions of each type in your deck, and can modify your deck at any time outside of a Hacker Battle.

Specialized Hacking must be purchased by your character in place of another feat, talent, or spell that you would normally unlock after completing a mission, and allows you to choose one Hacking Specialization to equip.  You can purchase this feat multiple times to gain access to other Hacking Specializations, but can only equip one Hacking Specialization and gain the benefits thereof at a time.  If you have access to multiple Hacking Specializations, you can switch between them at any time outside of a Hacker Battle.
