SPENCER IS SICK.  He's a struggling comedian and hypochondriac convinced that he’s dying from a bizarre array of symptoms. Out of options and armed with a binder full of WebMD printouts, he flies cross-country to his quaint hometown in upstate New York to consult with his five childhood doctors in a single day, planning to take the red-eye back to L.A. that night without seeing any of his friends or family. The only exception is Jay- the sweet, emotionally repressed townie Spencer convinces to chauffeur him around.

THE FILM IS COMPLETE. NOW, WE NEED HELP GETTING IT OVER THE FINISH LINE.

We shot this film in March/April of last year, and after months of editing, the film is picture locked and we are feeling great about how it's coming together. In addition to starring Matt and Max, the film features Bobby Moynihan, Eddie Pepitone, Adam Dannheisser, Jeremy Shamos, Emily Walton, Peter Friedman, Jenn Harris, Joe Pera, and many other incredible performers.

We've been really lucky that we've been able to pull together the budget necessary to get the film this far. And now, we are beginning our final push to actually finish it!

WHERE WILL THE MONEY WILL GO?

The final steps are simple, but they are expensive. Color correction, score composition, recording, mixing, licensing existing music, as well as a handful of distribution and festival-related expenses that will start popping up very soon. This includes creating a DCP of the film to screen in theaters, as well as paying for festival submissions, travel, and the designing and production of promotional materials.

FROM THE FILMMAKERS

This project was born during a three-hour slog through morning traffic on the Hutchinson parkway— New York City headed upstate. It’s a pilgrimage that the three of us, small-town guys living in the city, know intimately. The trip generally happens after a year or more of absence from said hometown, when messages from old classmates pile up and calls from parents have reached a high Jewish fever pitch. Going home isn’t easy for anyone. It’s even harder when you’re young, in flux, just starting to build a “home” somewhere else. So: why go? More often than not, it’s because you have an irregular mole and Dr. Zackler is your go-to guy for moles.

When we started writing “5 DOCTORS,” we wanted to look at why a person might carry so much anxiety about seeing their family and friends, avoiding their hometown like the plague but still desperate to suck every ounce of comfort and reassurance possible out of being there. The only way we knew how to make this movie was by keeping it honest and uncomfortably personal from soup to nuts. We wrote the characters of Jay and Spencer specifically for Max and Matt, and their rapport is the beating heart of our movie. We filmed in Hastings-on- Hudson, NY, where Max and Phil grew up and Matt would come through most weekends to attend house parties and briefly kiss girls. Every piece of our film- from camera to production design to performance- reflects that familiarity. This is a movie about nostalgia and panic happening at the same time, and you can see them duking it out in just about every frame.

When we began this process more than two years ago, we wanted to make “5 DOCTORS” because we knew that our story was personal enough, funny enough, tender enough, uncomfortable enough- we wanted it to represent us and our approach to making movies to the entire world. In pre-production, we asked ourselves the same question that keeps every filmmaker up the night before they first go to set: would we wind up with that movie?

After we charged through the whirlwind of production, had the honor of collaborating with our amazing crew and acting alongside some of our personal heroes, the dust settled and we realized that we actually wound up with something better. We could more than fill this paragraph with poetic examples, but we’re happy to say that the strongest endorsement we can give is: watch the trailer for our film below. We hope you’ll want to be a part of it.

Best,
Phil, Matt and Max

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Extra special thanks to Jacob Blumberg, who shot our Kickstarter video. The music in our video is by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, except for the first song, which is by The Band.

Risks and challenges

Once the film is complete, a whole new adventure begins. We are excited to take on the challenges of getting an independent film out into the world, and we are prepared to try to do it in every which way we can. From indie theaters across the country to streaming on your Apple Watch, we will be pursuing all possible forms of distribution available to a film like ours in 2016.
