Dungeon Master: Your party has been captured. You alone stand before the orc chieftain. He has condemned you all to death. What do you do?
The Bard: I use my silver tongue and my wits of steel to persuade him to let us all go. Furthermore, we are to be equipped and provisioned from their stores and have our pick of their finest horses. For we are not mere mortals but are unto gods!
DM: Sounds epic! Roll a Persuasion check for me.
DM: Oh no...
Welcome to my project! I set out with a very specific goal for this Kickstarter and that is to create a fun design that would speak to tabletop RPG players. I thought this would be the perfect way to let RPG players express their love or hatred for that dreaded 1-in-20 roll: the critical failure.
I designed a pin to commemorate the crit fail in shiny enamel for you to wear proudly. Remember: a failed roll is just another opportunity to show off your role-playing chops!
This pin will be cast in hard enamel with a single post and rubber fastener. The pin will be approximately 1.5" wide and 0.6" tall.
After much research, I have decided to work with Night Owls Print Shop to bring this pin to life. They're based here in the United States and have been extremely helpful in the planning stages of pin design. Below you can see my pre-production mockups. These files will eventually be sent to Night Owls to be converted into amazing, high-quality lapel pins.
Costs & Scheduling
I believe one of the most important aspects of crowdfunding is transparency. To that end, I want to share my budget with you all. Luckily the costs for this particular project are pretty straightforward:
- Production - $225: The bulk of the costs are going to the manufacturer to make at least 100 of this pin. This is the minimum order before costs start getting outrageous. Obviously, I will be purchasing more pins depending on the final backer count.
- Packaging - $75: This includes printing business cards for pin display as well as clear plastic sleeves to keep them fresh during shipping. While the cards have not been finalized just yet, they will be before the conclusion of the project and shared in backer updates.
- Service Fees - $100: This is to account for Kickstarter's fees, credit card processing fees, and to give a little buffer for any unforeseen costs that may come up.
Another vitally important aspect of this process is setting expectations around production and shipping. After careful planning with the manufacturer, here is a look at how this project will unfold from funding to delivery.
- 5/15 - Project Launches
- 6/14 - Project Ends (successfully, I hope!)
- 7/5 - Funds are transferred from Kickstarter
- 7/21 - Final orders are placed with the manufacturer
- 8/4 - Pins delivered to me
- 8/18 - All pins are sent to backers (hooray!)
The only dates on here that may flex are the final shipping from me to you. If the project does well enough to fund, I can easily ship out 100 pins in under 2 weeks. If the project does very well, and I need to ship 200, 300, or even more pins, the shipping period could extend. I will make sure these dates are updated as the project unfolds.
As it stands, I don't have any concrete plans for stretch goals. I want to focus on making my first enamel pin as successful as possible without adding too many additional costs. That said, if this project blows up I may design an additional pin or two for backers to get. There will probably be voting and backer submissions and a whole lot of fun, so tell your friends to join the party!
I'm Matthew and I love tabletop RPGs. I started with D&D, as many of us have, but have also enjoyed the Star Wars series, Dungeon World, and many others. I am usually found behind the DM screen but also enjoy playing Clerics and Rangers.
Thank you for checking out my project! I hope you like the pin I designed and I look forward to your support! Please consider sharing this project with your friends and family on social media like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram. The more people we can get excited about this project, the more likely we'll all get to enjoy this awesome tabletop gaming pin.
Risks and challenges
While this is my first time producing enamel pins, I have successfully executed and delivered on a craft-based Kickstarter in the past. I have also dealt with manufacturing and shipping partners in past personal and professional projects, so I am confident I can successfully bring these pins to you on time and at cost.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
