Welcome to the melancholy world of Melvin, the last unicorn. This comic is a satirical look at depression. It follows Mel through random days of his life as he deals with the dysfunctional people around him. Some of these creatures have bigger issues than our gloomy protagonist making his life more chaotic. For ex. his landlord is an alcoholic Kraken. One of his friends is big foot who only comes around for drug money, and his father is a criminally insane leprechaun.
The Unicorn has become one of my most popular characters. Having published my other title independently, I knew this was the route to take. However unlike my first comic, which was a 24 page saddle-back issue, I wanted this one to be perfect bound. Why? Well the style of the strips read much better when they are all together in one volume instead of being broken into several issues of 24 pages each.
Doing this however, means that the printing cost is a lot more than I alone can afford. So I have come to Kickstarter to raise the necessary funds to have the comic printed. The size of it will be is 5.5x8.5 inches so it will be easy to carry and will be 116 pages long. I will also be purchasing an ISBN and barcode so that it will be able to be sold in book stores.
The rewards are mostly made by hand, by the artist and co-creator. That's right every single plush has been sewn by hand! The artist cards and paintings are all done by the artist, so you will get rewards that come from the heart (and self induced slave labor).
With your help we can have this book published and available for distribution for next year! Thank you for your time, and support.
What will be done with the funds raised?
- I am planning on printing 1,000 116 page books (w/ KrakenPrint)
- Purchase of ISBN
- Purchase of Barcode
- Purchase of Materials used to make rewards: (Will Depend on Number of Backers)
- Shipping cost: (Will Depend on Number of Backers)
- KickStarter Fees: (10% of what ever is raised)
T-Shirts sizes S,M,L,and XL(for XXL and XXXL add $2.50) To get one you just have to adjust $20 dollars to your pledge for the light blue one. Or $15 dollars for the white one. The shirt order will be placed as soon as the Kickstarter ends. (if it is successful) So that means if all goes well US backers will get their shirts shipped out by December. International backers will get it in February when they get the other rewards.
The comic is due to be released March 2014 at Dan Con. But for our backers you will receive it a month earlier! That's right you will be the envy of your friends when you get your hands on this comic before anyone else.
On top of that, we have an exclusive 11x17 Print, that will not be reprinted! Once these are gone they are gone for good. Yours will be numbered and signed.
We also have artist cards! Each one will be drawn by the artist with one random character from the comic, making your card one of a kind.
Oh wait...it gets even better! We also have one of a kind plush toys of the Unicorn, Mel, and his annoying but cute friend, Pegasus. Each one is hand made and are limited to 20 each. Each stitch will be done with our hands and needles, NOT with a sewing machine. ^_^ Happy Happy Joy Joy!
For all you artist lovers I also made 2 water color paintings and 2 acrylic paintings. These are first come first served so whoever backs first gets to choose!
Risks and challenges
With anything there are risks. The main risk would be printing taking longer than expected. But we will do everything in our power to make sure everyone who helps gets their reward in a timely matter. Also there is the risk of computer failure, robots enslaving humanity, alien invasion, and or zombie apocalypse.
In all honesty, I know that it is very important to get our product, into the hands of those who have backed us, in a timely fashion. We will do everything in power to do so. We have given ourselves some time to make sure that we will be able to correct any issues that may come up. The only thing that may delay the process would be missing our deadline to send it to the printers. I don't see that happening unless an emergency happens in my life. If that is the case I promise to keep you up to date on how long it might take.
