So what's my novel about?
Over the Rainbow is a love story, a fantasy, an action adventure. And it's a modern day update of The Wizard of Oz!
Zippy Green never meant to fall in love with a girl, but when she does, her ultra-conservative father tries to send her to anti-gay camp. At the Kansas City airport, however, she hides inside a giant suitcase and sneaks onto an airplane headed not to the camp, but to Seattle, where her online love Mira lives. Halfway through the flight, the plane barrels out of control and crashes into the ground, knocking her unconscious.
When Zippy awakens, she finds that most of the passengers have vanished. She doesn’t know what’s happened, but she’s determined to find out. She begins a quest on foot toward Seattle, and along the way, she meets an exchange student with a concussion, a homeless man with a heart condition, a child without a shred of bravery, and a terrier named Judy. Together the group discovers that more than two-thirds of the world's population has mysteriously disappeared. But that's only the beginning...
All Zippy wants is to find her Mira, but before she can she has to contend with two outside forces. The first is her homophobic father, who does everything in his power to keep her from the girl she loves. And the second is extinct creatures of all shapes and sizes, including living, breathing dinosaurs, which have replaced the missing population.
Over the Rainbow is unlike any novel you've ever read. It mixes romance and comedy and action like you've never seen before. And at the heart of it is a love story between two teenage girls that will inspire readers all the world over!

I wrote the first draft of Over the Rainbow in spring 2012. The first chapter was workshopped by twenty creative writing students, and the manuscript has been edited by a traditionally published author of young adult fiction. Last summer I went to a writers conference and pitched the novel to various agents and editors. In August I started querying agents, and since then I've been revising my work and sending it out to more and more people. But while many agents have requested and enjoyed the manuscript, their main reason for rejection is that they don't know how to sell a book like this. They don't know how to sell a YA book with a lesbian protagonist.
In the last two years I've self published eight novels, including the acclaimed Happy Birthday to Me trilogy. I love the control I have over my work, my immediate back and forth with fans. And never before have I completed a project that I think in the end needs to be encouraged by the general public. Most of the agents and publishing houses aren't looking for gay YA fiction, aren't looking to take on the unknown, but I know there's a huge readership for it out there, and that many are clamoring for diverse books of this nature. This is where you come in!
I want to do everything in my power to make sure that Over the Rainbow is as polished as it can be before release, and that it reaches as many readers as possible. The money you put into my project will go to the following...
- The cover of the novel
- A professional book trailer, to be shot this summer
- Marketing, including advertising and book blog tours
- Printed copies of the novel, for book bloggers, Goodreads giveaways, and you!
I know the more work I put in to getting the word out about my novel, the better chance I have at making this book a success. And I know that I can't do this without your help!
Reviews of my YA debut novel Happy Birthday to Me
"Happy Birthday To Me was funny, it was definitely one of those books that had me laughing like crazy, and I loved that! At the same time, this book also brought me to tears. Happy Birthday To Me was a fantastic book, and I absolutely loved reading it! I encourage everyone to read it, and I hope you love it as much as I did" - Burning Impossibly Bright
"What an incredible story...You know a story is good when it causes you to have all kinds of emotions while reading it. I laughed out loud, I cried, with physical tears...I truly loved this story" - Page Turners Blog
"This book has left me speechless for several days, and I hope that I am eloquent enough to pull off a review that does this book the justice that it deserves. Obviously, I think it's amazing. The premise is something that I haven't experienced in my history of reading, and this was one incredible story to introduce the concept to me. Unfortunately, now, there may be too high of standards for any book to follow in Happy Birthday To Me's footsteps -- well, except maybe for the sequel" - Missy's Reads & Reviews
