Why more metal dice?
We are continually asked for standard metal dice at the conventions we attend throughout the UK. We have found those we used to supply have become far too expensive for our slogan "The right dice at a fair price", so we've decided to have our own made. As we've also been asked for metal dice which are not nickel based, by customers who have an allergy to nickel, we've thought long and hard about solving this economically.
Our answer is PEWTER!
As Tintagel is a village in Cornwall famous for two things - the alleged birth place of King Arthur, and as an early trading port for exporting Tin (the material Cornwall is famous for!) As tin is a major part of pewter, it made sense to us to make Tintagel Metal Dice from Pewter. We've also decided to manufacture from Low Lead content Pewter for ease of export to the USA and around the world.
Where will they be made?
We've found a specialist foundry in the UK, so we can honestly say these dice are "Made in England"!
What about finishes?
There will be a choice of hand finishes - Sateen as the main photo, or High Polish which looks almost like chrome plated (see the Spot D6 photo for the difference, high polish on the left and sateen on the right).
What size are the dice?
All the dice are nominally 16mm, the common size for polyhedral dice used for role playing games internationally (the actual dimensions across the flats of the dice will vary by the dice type, D20's are usually slightly bigger than the d6).
How well/random will they roll compared to other dice?
These dice are hand crafted using a centrifugal casting process which ensures no air is left in the center of the dice so they are not "weighted. Also they are hand finished/polished so the edges may not appear as precise as injection moulded dice, however, we have done trial dice rolls on the prototypes we've already had produced and they roll more randomly than most injection moulded plastic or metal dice!
How will the dice be supplied?
7 piece Polyhedral sets, 10xd10 sets, and pairs of spot D6 will be supplied in our own presentation boxes making them perfect for gifts, as well as protecting the dice. Single dice will be supplied wrapped individually in bubble-wrap for protection during transit.
When is the project expected to be completed for despatch?
Currently we expect to start despatching dice by the end of November of 2016, so the product should be with customers in time for Christmas! Prices include carriage for mainland UK, international carriage is an additional cost.
As promised - the Skull Dice are here! :)
The skull dice are rough centrifugal cast low lead pewter, hand inked, and then rumble polished. The faces measure between 16.4mm & 17.6mm, they are not necessarily well balanced but they are FUN!
These dice should be available for despatch at the same time as the initial rewards.
Risks and challenges
We expect tooling to be completed within a couple of weeks of funding, currently dice production is 4-6 weeks from then, but as this is all manual work the more sponsors we get the more dice will need to be produced.
Because of this, if we experience any problems during manufacture, the rewards will be sent out to backers in the order we received backing as we think this is the fairest way to do it.
We don't envisage any problems, but this is the only one that may occur if the project rolls a natural twenty and really takes off!
