About

Vision

Maker Girls, a proposed non-profit organization and innovation engine, empowers young girls by giving them hands-on access to and mentoring around business and STEM related technologies. The organization provides research, education and mentoring services in a way that redefines "geeky" to appeal to all girls so that they can make informed decisions about their futures. "Maker Girl Made" products will be offered for sale online and all proceeds will fund future efforts to develop STEM ready grads.

Project Description

New and evolving 3D printing technologies give kids a remarkable hands-on opportunity to be role models who literally turn their thoughts into things while they develop STEM skils. Children, when properly motivated and mentored in an unbiased, hands-on environment, have the ingenuity, drive and intelligence to transform themselves into the next next generation of great technologists, innovators, designers, and engineers. But where are the girls in the 3D printing revolution? The Maker Girls web series aims to answer this question.

Synopsis

"The Maker Girls" is an ethnographically oriented web documentary series with eight episodes that chronicles the journeys of 5-10 young girls aged 8-15 who get involved in the 3D printing "maker" or "fabber" movement currently gaining steam worldwide. Each webisode of The Maker Girls will be produced from excerpts of the girls own video diaries showing their day to day hands-on experiences with using 3D printing technologies.  Individually and collectively, The Maker Girls will share with viewers via the videos and social media channels, in their own voice, their ideas, experiences, aspirations, what they are learning, and successes and failures on the path to becoming The Maker Girls. Parental involvement is also a key theme in this series.

Goal

The goal of The Maker Girls web documentary series is to show that, when given access to 3D printers, easy to use software, a safe working space, and mentors, girls can transform themselves into the next generation of technologists, innovators, inventors, designers and engineers.

Ultimately, our vision is to see the Maker Girls documentary series become a sustainable web video series to make "geeky" cool and to help girls aged 8-15 develop STEM/STEAM related skills via hands-on interaction with 3D printing technologies!

Risks and challenges

As friends and colleagues will attest, in my 20+ years working for Fortune 500 technology leaders such as AT&T, SAP, Xerox, Lockheed Martin, as well as for non-profit organizations, I've never met a challenge that couldn't be overcome. To ensure success, my team will leverage an extensive network of experienced professionals and subject matter experts from the fields of education, technology, 3D printing and ADM, film and video production, marketing, advertising, PR and online communications. Once funded, the team will develop and manage to a strict 90 day project plan and timeline with clearly defined milestones, deliverables and owners. Weekly progress reports will be posted.
