Who the heck is Northern Star Theatre Company?
Northern Star Theatre has called 104 S. Main Street home for nearly twenty years! We are a 100% volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit community theatre. We produce six to nine productions annually and we entertain more than 7,500 guests each year! Because we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, your donation to this Kickstarter campaign is tax deductible!
What's Northern Star all about?
Northern Star’s five tenets are:
1. Fostering the arts through community productions (<-- Click here to see photos of past shows!)
2. Youth outreach (ask us about our Seats for Students campaign!)
3. Providing a creative outlet for all ages
4. Entertainment (after all, we are a theatre!)
5. Family oriented fun!
Hey, Northern Star, why are you moving anyway?!
Long story short, the Main Street bridge is in need of repair. Due to the close proximity of our building to the bridge, it was determined that the bridge project would cause structural damage to our building. As a result, the building will be demolished and we will lose the home we’ve occupied for almost twenty years! Rather than letting this news break us, we view this as an opportunity to further develop and expand our impact within the community.
Now, we need to renovate our new home and we need your help! After several months of searching, we decided to buy the historic Marshall 12 building, right in downtown Rice Lake. We are excited for the new opportunities we will have in this new location; however, it is going to take time, effort and resources for us to continue with our commitment to the continued development of collaborative cultural arts within our community.
Do you have a plan?
Yes, we do! First, we must vacate our current building by April 5, 2018 (Yikes!). Second, we need to renovate the Marshall 12 building because it is not a theatre. We will renovate Marshall 12 into a building that will serve our purpose. Finally, we want to deliver “better than ever” entertainment in our new building - showing our community why they were right to believe in us, invest in our future and continue their belief in our mission!
Is local theatre important?
You bet it is! We are the only center for theatre arts in downtown Rice Lake. In our new building, we also hope to expand our services to other arts-related projects by providing gallery space, meeting rooms and other arts-specific ventures.
Wow, $100,000 is a lot of money! Why do you need that much?
You're right, it is a lot of money! The building we’ve purchased for Northern Star’s new home has never been used as a theatre and needs many renovations in order for it to serve our purpose. The $100,000 we raise will go directly toward those renovations so we can continue to provide the quality theatre productions our community has grown accustomed to!
Hey, Northern Star, why can't you just pay for the renovations yourself?
Great question! Northern Star Theatre Company is 100% volunteer-run. This means that we have ZERO paid employees! Everyone you see, whether on the stage, behind the scenes, or in the Bistro, is volunteering their time, energy (and often their own money) toward nurturing the arts community in our area. Promoting an atmosphere of cultural arts appreciation is important to us – that’s why we do it! Northern Star is home to so many people – even people who don’t live here anymore. It is a haven for the creative, an outlet for the shy and a retreat for those looking for community. This also means that every dime Northern Star Theatre brings in goes right back toward producing the quality shows our audiences have come to expect !
We can see the future!
In our new building, we will plan to do more than continue to provide entertainment for Rice Lake and the surrounding area. We will also expand the services we offer to include art gallery space for local artists, leasable space for tenants who want to have a thriving business in downtown Rice Lake, provide space for meetings, conferences and classes (we're thinking everything from yoga to Sip & Paint classes!). On top of all that, the tenants who currently occupy space in our new building will experience an increase in foot traffic, which will amplify their exposure to the downtown Rice Lake scene.
Risks and challenges
It's no secret that the Northern Star Theatre crew will be without a home come the beginning of April. While we are in transition, we will be producing two full length musicals at Rice Lake High School as our new building is being renovated. (because we're awesome and can adapt to any situation - like THEATER NINJAS!)
During this process, we want to remain transparent with our community because we are so grateful that you believe in us and support our dream with this new project. We plan to keep you updated throughout the construction and renovation process from beginning to end. We have a lot of work to do and it won't be easy. That's where YOU come in!
