My name is Monica. I’m the founder of MoveSchemer, and I wore the same socks for thirty days without washing them as Part I of a three part project. Part II was writing a poem and performing it in thirty different sites. Today I’m fund raising for Part three of the project- United We Sock, an interdisciplinary performance that includes dance and spoken word presented June 9th and 10th at Governors Island as part of the Figment festival.
Where does the funding go? Towards the expenses of the project. This include artists fees, studio space for rehearsal, publicity costs, proper attire for inclement weather (outdoor performance), the list just goes on.
Why compensate the dancers? It is an understatement that the dancers involved in this project deserve compensation. I could not continue the work I do without the emotional, artistic, physical, and even monetary investment of the artists committed to the project. I need to assure that MoveSchemer dancers, who have invested many months of their time and money into the project, will get a well deserved compensation but also to cover many other artistic expenses.
United We Sock, started on September 17th, 2011 when I entered a contest at work. Employees who wore the same piece of a specific brand of clothing for thirty days would receive a price at the end of the contest. With this, they wished to advertise that their product would not stink even when worn 30 days without washing.
I wore a pair of socks. Five days later the product proved unsuccessful...
So I wore the same pair of socks for thirty days without washing them, making peace with the aroma of the socks, updating my status on facebook to document the status of the socks (and my feet), and eventually writing a poem which I performed in 30 different sites (one for each day I wore the socks). Finally, I recruited several collaborators that aided in turning the inconvenient experience of the socks and my poem into a performance that reflects on our current, common human condition, and the one for which I’m fund raising today.
The dedicated dancers in this piece entered the project 9 months ago, and have dedicated their talents sometimes at their own monetary expense. Please help me reward them in the way they deserve. THANK YOU!
