Who is Movement Forum?
Movement Forum is a company of professional dancers, skilled in improvisation, who create and perform improvised dances both for site-specific and theatrical settings. The company regularly teaches improvisation to high school and college students, in addition to hosting a free dance improvisation jam each month for the Salt Lake City community. Your donation will help us to host five guest artists (Gabriel Forestieri, Miguel Gutierrez, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Stephen Koester, and Yvonne Meier) who will be working with the company in 2014.
Why is Movement Forum raising money?
Movement Forum is turning 11 in 2014, and in celebration of our “tween” years, we have commissioned five improvisation artists to create new work with the company. The performance will take place in September 2014. Each show will be unique, based on split-second decisions made by the dancers while they are performing.
The artists who will be working with Movement Forum on this project are Gabriel Forestieri, Miguel Gutierrez, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Stephen Koester, and Yvonne Meier. (See below for more about each guest.) With your help, this new collaborative project will introduce Salt Lake City to the work of these artists through the lens of improvisation, give members of the community a chance to dance with the artists we bring to Salt Lake City, and make our dreams come true!
Each guest artist will work with company members for approximately 7-10 days. During each residency, artists will teach a master class for dancers in the community. Guest artists will also participate in a free improvisation jam that has been hosted monthly by Movement Forum for the past 10 years. Everyone is welcome!
Funding from Kickstarter will be used towards artist payment, travel expenses, costumes, rehearsals, and the performance venue. We have received a matching grant from the Salt Lake City Arts Council for this project, and contributions from Kickstarter will meet our match requirement.
Can Movement Forum exceed the goal? How will the excess be used?
Yes! There is no limit to what we can raise on Kickstarter. If Movement Forum exceeds our goal, we will be able to pay dancers for rehearsal time ($2000), perform with live musicians ($1500), and collaborate with costume designer, Sonya Galaviz ($1000). If you've read this far, you must be interested in this project, and would like to see the work that these outstanding guest artists will create with Movement Forum. Please consider pledging your donation now to guarantee that you will have the opportunity! The more we raise, the better this project will get!

Risks and challenges
Coordinating a project of this scale is an exciting opportunity for Movement Forum. We will be using our past ten years of experience to produce an entirely new show that will challenge our dancers to think about improvisation differently. As with any production, there are always unforeseen issues, but we are confident that our improvisation skills will serve us in finding solutions to any situation that may arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
